my first year also. I had the same observation, I was thinking they were going to drop off.

I purchased

so far I give it a thumbs and it was cheap. I have only used it twice so far.  It gets heavy so I limit to 2 gallons of spray. To pick it up I use a 6x8 laying on my tailgate so I don't bend and lift . It can hit 15 feet high, I use 4 gallons sprayed over 35 trees. My only knock so far is it runs 25:1 oil to fuel, yes another gas container and the throttle needs a little work so tension will lock it in place.

I am down to one lychee (had two Mauritius) after Irma, the survivor was damaged by losing 25% of the canopy when a branch from a Jacaranda cleaned out the East side. top to bottom. It is full of buds and new growth is appearing where the damage occurred. fingers crossed

i cut the fallen branch side to see how far it traveled and the dead wood was minimal. I will leave it till post fruiting for the big trim and canopy reduction as it getting large.

I would definitely wait until post harvest. At that point, you have two options:

 - You could leave it. It's not ideal, but the wound will heal over in a year or two. The tree will form a barrier around the dead portion internally, but it wouldn't impact tree health. Personally, I would probably leave it unless cutting it would not leave the canopy ugly or significantly imbalanced.

 - If you decide to cut it, you would take it back to the crotch where the branch attaches to the trunk

i have a lot getting ready, the only ones with mango bb's is rosigold and hatcher. primed and ready are venus, honey kiss, palmer, pim sane mun (too young), sweet tart and ugly betty

Lychee Mauritius broke at the trunk, Coconut Cream mango sheared clean at about ground level, Glenn mango leaned, overgrown Tropic Beauty peach leaned, pomagranate leaned. Carambola broke off about 7' above the ground.
There might be a good reason to trim the trees back every year.

Thankfully the storm is leaning towards the West so the EYE will miss. Sorry West coasters. Out of Biz? I think we would have to buy more trees if these get wrecked.

I found a table full of Keitt at Excalibur today. 8/21 I also had a Pineapple Pleasure, Maha. Gary, Phoenix and a Cotton Candy tree follow me home.

Of my three trees about half of the fruit had fly damage, last year 2016, one or two fruits (colder winter?). Tropic beauty had bigger fruit, UF One had the most, around 100 peaches on it. UF Sun had 3 fruits. Later in the season the more fruit fly damage.
 All that being said it is nice having some fresh fruit on the eve of mango season.

I did get a couple of Fairchild this year (off year for me). I will give it a go and compare the flavor profile also. That greenish yellow skin threw me.
