Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mystery Mango
« on: July 02, 2017, 10:38:54 AM »
A coworker handed me this mango and asked me to ID. His friend has two trees in his yard and they are identical. The Glenn is for sizing.

I had my first and only fruit this year off my tree on 07/01/17, in the ground 2 years. This fruit is a keeper as I bought it because of the reviews, and it does not disappoint based on that single fruit, juvenile tree "and my growing conditions"(Harry H.).

Just like Cookie Monster said in the past. I watered trees holding fruit, maybe 10 gallons, twice a week standing in the yard looking like a dummy wondering if it was worth it. My Springfel will spit but it has a full load of fruit this year. So far no fruit splitting.

Is there anything positive out of this like millions of drowned Sri Lanka weevils?

In Davie, I am seeing the animals pairing up. ;) all my trees roots are saturated and some covered. SFWMD needs to pump a little harder.

Just to put a fly in the ointment, orchid growers are using the Dynamite Red time release in So. Fl. they say it has a slower release for the heat and humidity over the summer.

I have a Beaumont and get a bountiful crop every year for the squirrels. It is a 20' high squirrel feeder. They eat them when it is too green to pick and process.

33
I don't think its lac scale as it is not symmetrical.

34
I am loaded with this on just about all my mango trees, it seems to coincide with low fruit pruduction.

Benders showed me this pricey one.

it is strong enough to hold large mango. I have no complaints

a skid steer with an auger is the way to go. Probably 60 to 80 dollars an hour with operator. It should take about 3 hours. mark your spots a day ahead with spray paint.

How can I tell when it is ripe. It is larger than a softball and just as hard.

My two trees had a light crop last year.
Mauritius' Lychee flushed with new leaves about 2 weeks ago, girdled the lower branches last fall to no avail.
Maybe next year, really thinking of taking one tree down, or beat within an inch of its life with a chain like in the old days. its best crop was when Hurricane Wilma twisted the hell out of them.

I had a few pineapples die last year, I think this is the culprit. Grown pretty close together and most died growing next to each other.

Pythium and Phytophthora.

My lemon meringue skipped last year and upon closer inspection it was loaded with lac scale. I treated it and this year there are buds and mangolets.

I have a custard apple 'san pablo' which is giving up its first fruit. Should I wait till it is soft on the tree before picking?

46
How long does it take for Adonis 75WSP to break down in the soil? Imidacloprid from what I can gather attaches itself to organic matter in the soil. I drenched one mango tree last year that looked like it was dying and was wondering when it would be safe to eat the fruit.

In Davie my peach trees are on auto pilot, so far I have only thinned the fruit and they are ripen just before mango season. On the downside they dont get as large as store bought, and two years ago 20% had worms.
Anybody growing Persimmons down here?

UFSun, 100 chill
UFOne, 250 chill
Tropic Beauty, 150 chill
I had fruit on mine last year, and in Western Davie we weren't even close to 50 hrs.
The fruit isn't large but plenty enough where you might want to thin whats on the tree.

I would reduce the canopy before the move, the city of Fort Lauderdale moved a 100yr old oak with success. They  trimmed it in two stages, I cant recall the time frame.

50
I have orchid tags over 10 years old with pencil, in my fruit trees I use cut soda cans and press hard when I write over a mouse pad leaving a trail of indentations, and loosely zip tied to a tree branch. Most of the plastic type tags in the trees were removed by wildlife.
