Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Telfairia Pedata seeds

I sometimes get seeds but none at present. They don't like too much water / wet feet. Plant in the drip line of a bigger tree and let it climb - they are massive but in the same way as Saba spp. The local farmers claim a small seed turns into male, a big into female - not sure if there is a scientic backup on that.

It's easy to tell male plants apart from female and hermaphrodite papayas. The males produce flowers far away from the central stalk. The females and hermaphrodites produce flowers right on the stalk.

Hmm, what does it mean in my case? They are on central stalk, isn't? Everybody's pictures I've seen with fruits have dark red petioles. My never get red, flowering continuously for 6 months. My trees are taller with thicker trunk than anybody's I've seen. I don't think there is a problem with maturity.

My seedlings look the same. Fruits are present but I havn't had a chance to taste them yet.

The seeds will be removed from the fruits tomorrow and mailed - there are still 20 seeds for "trade". I got a lot of requests, and sorry if I'm not showing interests in the species offered.
Thanks for the interest in spreading this African native to other countries.

Beni; which species of Durio are you growing?

130
To me it doesn't matter where people grow their trees...

I've seen him on Brazilian TV also. Too bad he has discontinued sending seeds. He had a great selection.

He is not sending seeds anymore - what a shame.

Ha!

i noticed my potted E. pitanga plants are sending up shoots through the holes at the bottom of the pots!!!

I might try to separate these and re-pot them...

I have yet to see another eugenia seedling that does this!

Adam , having several E. pitanga planted in the ground , today I noticed one that came up about 60 cm away from the original mother plant , didn't notice it before because of the weeds , pulled the weeds and it was also flowering .

Yes; this happens to me as well and they can be succesfully separated from the roots of the motherplant.

ficus spp.

A total of five fruits were collected of this rarely cultivated African fruit. The taste is lemon-pineapple with some annona like flavor to it.
Some has already sent a PM, but more seeds are available.

Thats Annona montana

Perhaps some photos would help?

Is there a chnace to buy this palm in Europe?

Rarepalmseeds has them. Not cheap though. And i have to warn you that germination rate is usually quite low. It's a difficult palm to grow as it puts out a very long tap root first before forming leaves. I have some growing here, but not fruiting yet.

Germination rate of Borassus aethiopum is usually very high; and here the fruit is knocked to split it so the 2-3 seeds can be separated. Takes forever to grow.

Giant yellow Mulberry is once again in season. So far 2 fruits have been collected; do PM me for seeds - accept only exchanges (I'm not selling seeds).
Photos above.

They can resprout from the succulent roots even if the stem dies off, mine didn't look good too while in pots.

Seems like this season will provide a bumper crop! Guess I will now be able to comment on the side effects if any.

We are at 1.190 m (3,900 ft) in Kampala and as close to equator as one can be in a tropical capital. I believe the the lowest recorded temperature was 9-10c, about 48F.

Durian do fruit in Entebbe botanical Gardens (1134 metres) and I bet I can grow just about any ultra tropical fruit here, if not for a modest average rainfall of 1.5-1.6m. We are about to enter the rainy season, so the humidity is only around 70% with no winds.

The seeds of  Duguetia furfuracea germinated this week without use of chemicals; however - keeping them alive will likely turn into another cerrado-nigthmare..

Any photos of the mature fruiting tree? And yes - Jim or Mike - I would be interested in future seeds as well; understand each fruit has few seeds.

Soren I don't see them as much and I think people don't grow new ones much.People are less familiar with tropical fruit in my area the days.Like many fruit species cyclones wiped put most trees in the main fruit growing areas where farms and collectors are. They don't seem to have been replanted even though like durians, abius and many artocarpus they are worthwhile fruits.

A bit of all I guess; I look forward to taste them myself when the seedlings are grown ;-)

Mike - you mentioned they are slowly disappearing from your area; cut down and replaced with our species I assume? Due to size of tree, taste or climatic factors?
