Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Month Week 1 (VIDEO)

I admittedly don't know much about mangoes, so I decided to try to expand my horizons a bit and try some of the less common varieties available in SE Asia. This video covers the Apple Mango and another variety that I don't know the name of. If anyone can ID it from watching, please let me know!

Haha, no problem Mike. Favorite fruits are of course very much a matter of opinion. I'm not a grower or an expert on fruit, I'm a traveler with a fascination. I haven't had all those varieties, but I'm sure as my hunt continues my favorites will change exponentially.

I have probably eaten 1000's of achachas and if that is the best fruit the guy on the clip has never tried then his palate needs attention. Better than pulasan, mangosteen, durian, banana, pineapple, passionfruit, watermelon. .....a resounding no.

I know right, that guy in the video must be out of his mind!

Nice video Jared!!!

Thanks for sharing

And thanks for the shout out!!!

Annonas and garcinias at the top of the list!!! I agree with your findings!!

No problem Adam! Thanks for introducing me to such a great fruit!

Interesting while atemoya is clearly better than other Annonas and he prefers rambutan to lychees and longans having achachas as his number 1 is contraversial.

Why controversial?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit hunting in Iowa?
« on: August 25, 2015, 10:20:52 AM »
Good luck in Iowa! You might find some pawpaws. Look for woods and creeks, especially where forests border fields/clearings...look along this interface.

That's about all I can offer.

If you make it to Nashville any time, please let me know! I'd love to go Pawpaw and Maypop hunting with you.

EDIT: I would add that you may not find any ripe pawpaws in mid-September. Especially being a cooler zone, they may ripen even later in Iowa if you can find them.

Thanks for the tip!  I'll be there around the 19th. If there aren't paw paws there,  I may wander off to the paw paw festival in Ohio the week before. And definitely, always happy to fruit hunt with some company. I don't have plans to visit TN anytime soon, but I do make my way out that way every once and a while.

True. Most noni juices use only a small amount of noni and lots of strong flavored juices like pineapple so you can't taste the flavor of cheese and vomit.
I love taro! It's a flavor that isn't common in the west though. I wouldn't put pineapple with it since taro has a nutty creamy flavor and sour fruit would more cover it up than compliment it. Coconut milk and sugar would maybe work better.

Great video.

Regarding number 6 though, it wasn't too clear if you thought they were the same species.

Yes, I was worried it would be a little confusing to see all the footage of the different species when I'm only talking about one. But without it it was not a very entertaining segment. Goal of this video was to just briefly discuss the past episode and not be a full review, so I compromised a bit on that.

Nice video of Jared making all kinds of terrible faces. Congratulations! You managed to offend 3 different cultures in one short video:
Durian: much of Asia's #1 favorite fruit
Chempadek: highly revered, especially in Malaysia
Ume: highly thought of in Japan
FYI noni fruit was never eaten by Polynesians, except perhaps as a starvation food. Mostly it was the other parts of the plant that were used medicinally: roots, leaves, bark. It was actually Europeans that started touting noni fruit as anti cancer.
Don't consider chewing betel eating a fruit! Especially what you were eating, which was combination of betel seed, betel leaf, and lime powder.

Hahaha  ;D I have surprisingly only really gotten serious complaints about the cempedak review. Durian and Ume lovers maybe are more used to hearing some resistance?
True about Betel, technically that was mostly a seed review. :P

Thanks Kared, you made my day. I really LMAO!!!!!

There are some Cordias that I am sure you will love, the problem is, these will glue you lips and tongue and you will be not able to finish the video LOL

Cheers

Carlos

You know I'd try it at least once... :-X

Awesome video!
Except… I have to disagree on the noni.
I love noni …
Tastes like a combination of two of my favorite things - bananas and stinky French cheese!
(I have about a dozen noni plants in my greenhouse in Idaho right now)

Carolyn

Carolyn, You are a stronger person than I.

delete the 's' in 'https' in your link, so it says 'http'....and your video will appear embedded in the thread.

Great tip! Thanks

Awesome video!
Always enjoy watching them, though I do like myself a good Chempedak and the Betel piper leaf is bitter but not nearly as bad as fresh Kratam! God Thats a foul tasting plant!

Betel leaf wasn't terrible, but not enjoyable at all. Kratam I'm glad to say I haven't tried yet. :)

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Fruit hunting in Iowa?

Mid September I'll be coming to Iowa for work. Anyone know of anyone growing anything interesting or any markets to check out? I'll have a car and a lot of free time, so anywhere within a few hours of the Des Moines area is fair game for me. I'm excited about tracking some pawpaws if anyone knows a good place, but other uncommon fruit would also be great!

Thanks guys, its so nice to hear that you are enjoying them! Adam, your pitangatubas will be making another appearance in a couple weeks when I post my top 10 episode. ;)

Good job, Jared. Congrats on making it to 100. Love your videos ... straight forward, and not flashy ... which make them easy to watch. :) I loved your videos from the Philippines, one thing though, you can eat the outer shell of the Santol ... just peel the skin off.

It was pointed out to me too that the variety of Santol I had isn't normally eaten out of hand either. I'd love to do another Santol episode and take a look at a sweet one and the rind.

Jared, your videos are great and very informative. I suggest having an index to all your videos on this forum. It's what this forum is all about: informing people about tropical fruits. Keep up the good work.

Good idea! I've been meaning to organize the episodes by fruit and scientific name and list them on a website. So I'll post that info here first. :)

I binge watched this weekend after you linked it 8)

Great stuff well done I love watching someone actually eating a fruit Im interested in!
Also really cool you give fruits second and even third chances when its not too your taste ;D

Thanks Stuart! Sometimes a fruit tastes terrible the first time but then I aquire a taste for it. Like Durian for instance, couldn't stand it the first time.

Hi Jared, I second Vernmented's thoughts. I have been a big fan for quite a while. Keep up the great work. Best regards, Chris

P.S Someone should do a compilation of your "tasting" face...I would like to see the variation (or lack thereof). Thanks

The next two episodes will be on the top ten worst and best fruits that I've had. So it will be mostly to footage of me cringing/enjoying. ha

murahilin, Great. I'll start posting them on here. I try to get one out every Sunday.

Buddyguygreen and Fyliu, Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.

Vernmented, really appreciate it. The thumbs up are always a big help :)

The video is back up. The copyright issues on this are driving me up the wall. I've been flagged for using a cover song (even with permission from the band) and for using public domain music... what the hell?

Anyway, the video is now here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcUFAu7D6QU

UPDATE: sorry I had to take the video down temporarily. Some idiot company claimed my use of a public domain song I used...  it'll be back up within the hour.

I just finished my 100th episode for my fruit hunting youtube series. I put a lot into this one, so I thought you all might like to take a look.
I normally don't post about my videos on here, since its a weekly series and I don't want to bombard the forum. If its not in the guidelines to have this post at all, let me know and I'll take it down, put on a dunce cap and never do it again.  :P

Thanks for the tips!

Greenman62, I'm taking notes on that! Especially interested in the Christs thorn jujube and the egyptian guava. I've never seen a guava like that before. very interesting.

Tropicdude, will definitely look out for the Taimor mango. Do you happen to have a photo of this so I know what to look for?

Hey guys!

I'm planning another grand adventure this winter and hope to do some fruit hunting for my youtube series while I'm traveling.
I most likely will be going to Borneo and Egypt (provided things are safe when I go). Anyone have any tips on good markets, farms, rare fruits, etc to look out for?... I already have some ideas on Borneo, but Egypt is still a mystery to me.

In other news, I'm about to reach my 100th episode on my series, if you haven't seen my channel check it out! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChsbD6Clp-ZPqKwXJR3V7DQ

Thanks!

Tropicaliste, I won't be visiting Palawan this time around :/ And you are right about the SM mall, it has a great selection and not too much more expensive than the street vendors. My first market I visited I bought Marang and Caimitos for sale and she took me for 100 pesos/kg saw these cheaper at SM. So she was obviously taking advantage of me. Later that night I saw a street vendor with caimitos priced at 35php/kilo! I'm a little more street wise now.

Viking guy, I actually have 4 weeks total (tourist visas are now for 30 days!). And I think its a pretty adequate amount of time for a vacation. I of course would like to stay longer and see more places for longer, but  I would much rather get a few days in several places than spend my entire time in one city. Most of my time will be spent in and around Manila with 2-3 day visits in other towns and cities. Domestic flights are quick and cheap so I'm not losing much time traveling, the worst travel will probably be the buses I plan on taking up to north Luzon but thats all part of the adventure :). I'm definitely hitting Baguio as a short stop on the way further North. I'll mark down the botanic gardens on my list. I hear the main market at Baguio is great, anything in particular I should be looking for?

Tropicaliste, thats great, always nice to hear that somebody is watching out there. :P
I've planned a visit to Roberto's conservatory in Los Banos in a couple weeks. Really looking forward to it. Have you been? I'm hoping he is open to letting visitors try fruits as well.

Ben Mango, thats wonderful! I'm marking those markets down. I scheduled three full days in Davao so should be able to hit quite a few markets.

Tropicaliste, Oh thats really exciting Mabolo, marang, santol and Jambul have been on my hit list for a while now. I've never been in the right place at the right time when they've been in season. I'll be spending about a week in Manila so I'll check the supermarkets. Any open air markets you'd  recommend? I've heard the Cubao Farmers Market is supposed to be quite good.
