Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cacao Tree Loaded with Pods

It's a Criollo but I don't know the variety. The best thing about it is that it easily fruits. Pods are full sized also.

Florida's avocados, papayas, tomatoes, mangoes, peaches, passionfruit and peppers are safe — along with more than 400 other fruits and vegetables.

They'd all been threatened by the Oriental fruit fly, an invasive pest that infested farmlands in Miami-Dade County last fall.

As of Saturday, the state  has declared the insect eliminated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Who's Growing Coffee?

FLgreenman,

years ago (maybe 3-4?) I paid a visit to your impressive garden.

I remember eating a fruit from a coffee plant that you said was from your family's plantation in PR (if I'm not mistaken?)  The flavor was enjoyable when eaten fresh (which is how I intend to enjoy this fruit)

I planted the seed, and now it's starting to bloom in a 2 gal pot, about 3.5 ft tall.

It's very easy to grow, and doesn't mind being rootbound, and periodically neglected (in terms of fertilizer, and container upsizing)

I will post pics if it sets fruit, this would be the first coffee plant I've fruited.

Very cool!...yes those plants you got from my place were from seeds from my family's trees in the mountains of central Puerto Rico. Great to hear they fruited for you. My family still has coffee trees there and we have farmed coffee for over 100 years. We should talk soon, its been a while....!

8.50?  >:( :o

Yes expensive but it was over a pound (17.5oz). Its a big bag.  Figure that most regular chips are $3 to $4 for a 4 to 6 oz bag so these are not that bad.  Terra Chips are a lot more expensive

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Vinamit Jakfruit Chips: Taste Test
« on: January 25, 2016, 08:42:42 PM »
Recently I bought some Vinamit brand jackfruit chips. They are made in Vietnam, fried in Canola oil,  and come in a slick modern metallic bag. Being a Jakfruit lover, I forked over $8.50US for a 17.5oz bag(500g) and was not disappointed. They are crispy and delicious. Very flavorful and will be a favorite of most Jakfruit enthusiasts!. Has anybody tried these?

They have it growing in the Whitman Pavilion at Fairchild Gardens, Not sure if it ever fruited though.  Maybe Noel will know.

I have seen the Fairchild tree full of flowers but not sure if it has fruited. I think it will fruit outdoors in many S. Florida locations but not enough people have tried. Lack of tree availability is a problem

Here are some photos from my visit today to the Fairchild Garden Ramble Fest in Coral Gables Florida. It's an awesome  event with great food, live music, tropical fruits and exotic plants for sale. The day was pretty rainy but we got in and out with minimal delay.

Cacao does not like temperatures under 40 degrees very long and will start losing leaves. They can be killed when temps go under 32 degrees F.....It also depends how long the cold lasts. The longer you have low temperatures, the more damage it will sustain. They are tropical or sub-tropical for sure

if you have a self fruiting variety like my seedling, it can set fruit from seed in 3 to 4 years.

You can eat the scant pulp around the seed but it does not taste like coffee. Its a just a mild flavor.
