Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: a nice variety of fruits harvested today

Good stuff Adam....congrats on these beauties!

There are many micro-climates in South Florida that are virtually frost free. During 17 years that I lived in Coral Springs, the coldest I ever recorded was 33 degrees(F) for two nights but even worse than the cold is that fact that our ground soils are VERY alkaline. Durian and many others will die once the roots reach the sandy-rocky soils. Also, most Durians grown in the ground here have died when they contracted fungal diseases like Phytopthora. I am not aware of anyone fruiting one here but Fairchild Garden has the best chance since they are attempting it in a specially climate controlled greenhouse with totally ACID soils. At least one of their large grafted Durian trees have flowered already but have not set any fruits that I am aware of.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Green-Red Florida Sugar Apple?
« on: September 20, 2015, 05:51:36 PM »
Here's a unusually colored Sugar Apple (A.squamosa) that I just picked. It's definitely a green variety but has reddish coloring along the carpels. This seedling tree had just one fruit this year so I am not sure if they all will be like this one.
Just a cool looking fruit

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Reviews
« on: August 30, 2015, 04:48:08 PM »
Here are some mangos i just picked:
Some of these i've never eaten before, like Fukuda, Harumanis, and Smith. Of the new ones only got to try the Fukuda so far. It was still a bit on the hard side when i cut it but still tasted quite nice, but nothing out of the ordinary. Has a little bit of fiber, but not objectionable. Will review the others later as i slice them.
Question about the Fairchild...is it really a Fairchild? As you can see it has a slight pinkish tinge. Is that possible?

Oscar
I have seen and eaten dozens of fruits from several "Fairchild" mangos tree but none had a purplish tint. Don't think you have a true Fairchild!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: CUT NUT TREE (Barringtonia edulis)
« on: August 30, 2015, 04:40:51 PM »
Have not tried it and am not growing it but here's one I saw fruiting in a large pot at a nursery in Puerto Rico a few years ago. The fruits (nuts)are very large. Very impressive plant!

Ilama seeds are 3 to 4 times the size of Cherimoya seeds and they are light brown colored and very shiny.

33
Grows wild all over South Florida and is used here for jelly by a few afficianados also but mostly ignored by the locals. It's Ok but not really worth the trouble....

Oh wow, those look bountiful. I haven't had Lanzones in a while, I wonder what variety they are. Can almost taste them. :)

I think they are "Concepcion" Langsats from the Philippines....

This past Saturday, I was able to get away and attend Fairchild's Mango Festival. I arrived at 10am and already the closest parking lots were totally full. The place was totally packed. Like always, the mango display area was incredible and all the Mango experts were there to answer your questions. Lots of great food, mangos to buy and great people made it a memorable time. It's always a great event...

Just got back from the 2015 Redlands Summer Fruit Fest. Great event as always. Chris Rollins came back from retirement to host the event. There were loads of fresh locally grown fruits and some great displays including over 200 cultivars of mango. Ran into fruit guru Steve Spangler from CA and many old friends also. The Fruit and Spice Pk looks great and there were lots of ripe fruits to taste on the park grounds also. Lots of people selling Brewster Lychees on the roadside for $3lb. They were awesome!

you better take the prize if you win!

nice pic!!

I want at least one seed from that tree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that's impressive. Inside or outside over winter? Min temps tolerated please?

This tree was totally grown outdoors with the lowest temps being around 38degrees F this winter for one night. It only lo0st a few leaves since we had a mild winter.

You are a brave man for planting grafted Durian in the ground so far up north. Did your grafted trees from PR survive?

Another thing is S. Fla landscape. Its flat as a pancake. Durian likes a lot of water but will not tolerate standing water even for a short amount of time. What happens when hurricane passes nearby and dumps enormous amount of rain in 2-3 days? Your tree is likely kaput. This is above challenges with soil and Arctic blasts. You need fancy greenhouse with a lot of soil amendment. Its highly recommended to plant durians on slight slopes for good drainage.  However when I look at the pictures of Thai commercial orchards, they are always flat. Don't know how they do it. Maybe rain patterns are different in those regions?

Where I live in the northern part of Broward county, it can rain for hours and dump several inches of rain and the next morning you can't even tell it rained. We have incredible drainage in most areas although some areas in the southern part of Broward county do get flooding. Our rainfall totals can be as high as 100 inches per year!

Those indeed look to be high quality. Better than any Ive seen in markets here.
I think I spotted "irradiated" on the box in the first picture.

These fruits ARE NOT irradiated...see box photo

Just wanted to let everyone in the Palm Beach and North Broward areas know that fresh Guatemalen Rambutans have arrived in the local markets. I bought some yesterday at Western Beef in Boca Raton for $3.99lb but they are also available at Penn Dutch in Margate and The Boys Market in Delray Bch. Very delicious and just a nice fruit....
