Tropical Fruit Discussion / Who is growing Breadfruit in FL?
« on: September 17, 2014, 10:36:30 AM »
I know sleepdoc was growing it  last year, but not sure how that turned out.  What were your experiences?

For some reason, I am a glutton for punishment, and want to give it a try, despite the fact that it needs babying to make it through winter.  I just love the way the tree looks.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted: Earlygold mango budwood
« on: July 03, 2014, 11:25:49 AM »
I had an earlygold mango at f n s park last week, and i would like to grow it.  I called the park and they don't have it.  Anybody have it, or know who does?  Thanks.

I recently had a bombay mango, and i loved it.  SO easy to twist and remove the stone and spoon it out.  I think that the tree is an alternate bearer here in FL.  2 questions:

1.  Is the tendancy to bear alternately based more on climate or on the tree's ability to bounce back one season after it has already expended so much energy fruiting?  For example, is it possible for one to have 2 trees that bear in alternate years so as to ensure a good crop each year (not talking about better pollination, but to have one fruit one year, and the other in the next year).

2.  In the alternate bearing year, does the tree fail to set fruit, or does it just set less than the previous year?

Thanks!

Recipes / Tamarind Sapodilla Smoothie!!
« on: April 27, 2014, 04:31:50 PM »
Sapodilla is too syrupy sweet for my liking, but it is productive and available when other fruits are not.  therefore, i decided to try a few things so that i could have a new appreciation for this fruit.  To me, it needed a tart component so I used tamarind.

Ingredients:

3-4 sapodillas
3 bananas
1 pack goya frozen tamarind
2-3 tbspoons sugar
3-4 oz coconut milk

Blend smooth, and enjoy!  Now my wife is bugging me to make more, when before, she wouldn't even care about sapodillas.  To me, it tasted like a green apple jolly rancher, but i may be embellishing unknowingly

Recipes / Chocolate (Persimmon) Mango Smoothie
« on: April 25, 2014, 10:06:35 AM »
Blended up some fruit the other day and it was delicious!  Tasted like mangoes dipped in chocolate.

3 large black sapote (fully ripe, oozing from the bottom)
2 mangoes
1/4 of a pineapple
1-2 oz. coconut milk (optional)
4 tablespoons honey
2-3 ripe bananas
Probably could add some cacao nibs or cocoa powder, but I didn't use either.

Blend until smoothie.  The finished product is thick, brown, and smells amazing!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / where to place fruit while ripening
« on: April 07, 2014, 05:21:11 PM »
Hey, all.  I tried searching the forum and web for best ways to ripen fruit, but all i kept seeing was how to ripen it faster (in a bag).  My counter is full right now and though the wife hasn't complained yet, it's only a matter of time.  I tried a basket and a bowl but both caused problems due to fruit squishing each other.

What is your method of ripening fruit, especially without losing the entire kitchen....I am thinking this summer it will be much worse, with all the mangoes and whatnot in season at once.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ranking Annonas into tiers
« on: April 04, 2014, 01:39:53 AM »
I have been reading up on annona threads recently, and wanted to have one where we just rank the annonas into tiers (top-tier, 2nd tier, 3rd tier etc.  I am trying to figure out what annonas to plant, and which to admire from afar.

I know there may be variability within fruit (for example, big red sugar apple may be top-tier, while most others are 3rd tier, etc.), but in general where do they rank in relate compared to each other?

I haven't tasted many annonas, but from what i have read, I would guess the following:

Top-tier:
cherimoya (though it doesn't fruit in FL, at least well)
reticulata (custard apple)
soursop

2nd tier:
atemoya (some varieties may be top-tier)
ilama
rollinia

3rd tier:
sugar apple
(fingersop)
A. cornifolia
A. glabra (pond apple)

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / J-30 or Dang Rasimi Jackfruit?
« on: March 31, 2014, 07:26:49 PM »
I will be attending a grafting class at fairchild farm this weekend and last i heard, I would be able to graft one of these 2 types.

The J-30 seems to be perfectly oval shaped (i'm sure there's a better word, like ovoid or something) and I have heard good things.  Both were recommended by Noris Ledesma.  I am leaning toward J-30 but was interested in others' opinions.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I was at Fairchild Farm this weekend for a beekeeping class with Noris Ledesma and she showed us a few of their experiments in breeding.  I hadn't hear about this before, but apparently there are other "species" of mango from Borneo that were collected and planted out.  One has totally white flesh.  Anyway, they are screening the borneo types in with mangifera to create new hybrid mangoes (first they must plant out the seeds from this hybridization so it won't be any time soon) ..Just thought it was worth passing on.

Not exactly sure what traits they are hoping to incorporate--maybe just to diversify the genetics at the Farm.

I have heard that papaya and guava must be bagged here in South Florida to prevent fruit fly larvae inside the fruit.  My questions are:

Which varieties of fruit also need bagging to stay clean from CFF?

When is the fruit bagged (from the time just after flowering?  While the fruit is immature?  Just before it ripens?)

What type of bag/materials are used to accomplish this?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hialeah Red Avocado
« on: March 21, 2014, 11:24:00 AM »
Hello.  Does anyone know about Hialeah Red Avocado?  The red avocadoes I have eaten in the past were very bland with a loose seed.  Is this a good variety?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / chlorine filter recommendations
« on: March 19, 2014, 10:47:54 AM »
I am in the market for a chlorine filter to attach the hose to so my seedlings and other trees won't be affected by the chlorine (and other harmful elements).  Anyone have a good one to recommend that is fairly inexpensive?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best way to consume canistel
« on: March 11, 2014, 10:00:07 AM »
The best way to consume carambola thread was helpful--and inspired me to find out more about canistel.

I enjoy them, but haven't quite figured out the best way to eat them, and tasty recipes that you use.  For example, starfruit is a better juice than out of hand fruit.  What about canistel???

Thanks!
