I was just reading about caimito online, and it seems that caimito is dwarfed when grafted onto Satin Leaf (C. oliviforme).  Has anyone attempted this?

I have a spot behind my house that gets good sun during the summer, but is in shade from daylight savings (oct) to March.

My thinking is that since trees use leaves for sunlight, it would be ok to plant deciduous trees (figs, persimmons, grapes) in that spot despite receiving no direct sunlight for 5 months of the year.  Does that sound reasonable?  Anyone with experience doing this?

Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / Best (tasting) pollinator for Page "orange"
« on: December 01, 2014, 03:06:57 PM »
I have a Page orange and I need to get a pollinator tree.  I think my choices are Orlando tangelo or clementine tangerine.

What is the best clementine tangerine tree in your opinion?

Thanks.

The weather has started to drop down here in S. FL (as you all in northern parts of FL already know) and I was wondering what you are bringing inside, covering in place, etc.

I have a mangosteen that I have been keeping in my shed at night

I also have several theobromas, some artocarpus, and various others seedlings that I am debating bringing in also.

What are you protecting from cold (in FL)?

I have been enticed by the thought of eating fresh palm hearts.
I am looking for a species that:
suckers or clumps well (so as not to be killed when the trunk is cut)
stays relatively small
Doesn't have nasty thorns

I have read that peach palm is used commercially, but not looking for spines/thorns to spice up the pruning routine.  Any suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pineapple Banana Plant?
« on: November 20, 2014, 01:56:19 PM »
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this sport of rajapuri?  Pineapple sherbet finger banana sounds too good to be true.  I have seen it at Just Fruits & Exotics as well as other sites in CA.

Thanks.

Sour Bacuri--(Garcinia acuminata
Lemon Drop Mangosteen--(Garcinia intermedia)
Charichuelo--(Garcinia madruno)

Seashore mangosteen-- Garcinia hombroniana

Is this info correct?

Any others that can make it?

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora coccinea (Red granadilla)
« on: November 20, 2014, 10:08:31 AM »
I just saw a mention on Pepe's website that P. coccinea will fruit in FL, but haven't found much mention on the forum except a tour of leo manuel's yard.  Anyone have experience growing this fruit?

I have seen a bit of info online regarding how to prune your passiflora so they stay productive, but it seems to be a little conflicting.  I have heard they grow well on a fence, and atm my fence is covered.  I read it is good to prune about 1/3 of the vine, and then also read that all "limbs" should be trimmed way back.  I want the vine to be productive, but also want it to look nice (as it does currently).

Do you prune your vines?  If so, what has worked for you?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / World's largest Cashew tree (Natal, Brazil)
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:37:22 AM »
I was watching a show about Brazil on PBS the other night and they showed the Maior Cajueiro do Mundo, which is a cashew tree that takes up/covers 80,000 square feet and supports something like 1500 families.  I had never heard of this tree before, but it seems pretty famous so many of you probably already know about it.  For those that don't, enjoy!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Are any of your trees dormant yet?
« on: November 14, 2014, 03:25:37 PM »
My sugar apples look pretty beat up atm, but other annonas seem to be lush.  Just read a UF report on SA that said trees go dormant in November, so I imagine the yellow and black leaves on my na dai trees will be dropping soon.

Are your sugar apples looking pretty rough this time of year?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Ross Sapote seeds
« on: November 12, 2014, 04:57:03 PM »
I am not even sure if anyone would be interested in these, since they won't come true to the parent, but it may be good for breeding or rootstock for canistel or Ross.  The Ross Sapote fruit were creamy and tasty great!!

These are from fruits I recently ate that were grown locally.

PM me if interested.

There was some debate/confusion on another thread about rheedias/garcinias (now known as garcinias) and I had a similar question about persimmons being seedless, so I wanted to make a thread where we could list fruit trees that can be grown to fruition without pollination.

Here's what I have read/heard to start it off:

1.  New-world Garcinias (Oscar claims there are only a handful of garcinias that are truly dioecious, and won't fruit without 2 differently-sexed trees)

2.  Persimmons

3.  Some citrus

4.  Some grapes

5.  Figs

What else?

I read in Morton's FOWC book, that strawberry tree gets infested with fruit flies in Florida.  However, I have toured a few member's yards and hadn't heard anything about fruit flies.

What is your experience here in Florida?  Obviously, the fruit is too small to bag so I need to know what I'm dealing with, as I like the taste and that it fruits most of the year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to plant strawberries in South Florida?
« on: October 16, 2014, 10:02:10 AM »
Hi, I want to plant some strawberries this year.  Last year, I got them too late, and may have been wrong variety.

Anyone have experience with growing them in zone 10b?

If so:

1.  When do you plant the plugs?

2.  What variety(ies) do you recommend?

96
I got to try some at F & S park this summer, and they were pretty tasty.  I am wondering who has a really good variety, as I am sure we have no named cultivars here in FL.

Can't seem to find anything on cold tolerance, and hopefully they aren't dioecious.

Recipes / dried purple dragonfruit at WFM
« on: October 13, 2014, 10:41:32 AM »
I recently saw a bag of sliced, dehydrated dragon fruit.  It looked quite good, but I was in a rush so could not investigate more.  Anyone ever had dried dragonfruit?  Interested to know if it's better than eating fresh.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What fruit trees are true to seed?

I have heard varying information regarding planting annonas, jackfruit, and others.

What fruit do you know is true to seed?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Must-have Loquats
« on: October 08, 2014, 12:02:23 PM »
I am trying to compile a list of loquat varieties to gather.  I already have Big Jim, Yehudah, and Bradenton.  What do you consider must-have loquats?  (geared to FL, since I don't know how CA varieties will do here).

I am interested in Wolfe, Avri, Champagne, Novak, Torrey, and Oliver, and any others you think are great!

Please describe the fruit size, color, and flavor.

THANKS!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Abius and latex
« on: October 02, 2014, 07:17:02 PM »
I sampled an abiu a few weeks back.  The taste was good, but b the end, my mouth was stuck together from latex.  Is there a way to avoid this unpleasant situation--let it ripen more?  Eat it a certain way?

Thanks
