Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What are the best edible gingers?
« on: January 30, 2016, 05:09:43 PM »
I use Zingiber officinale, the common ginger and Curcuma longa, tumeric in my cooking. Both of them have antiinflamatory properties

I also use tumeric leaves to prepare a dish called Patholi or Patolyos. Green tumeric leaves are lined with batter made of white rice, stuffed with grated coconut, jaggery and cardamon and cooked in a steam boiler. This dish is common in Goa, a State on the West Coast of India

I am looking for a source of Curcuma aromatica, a powerfull anti inflamotory root

I have been using two spoons of cooking oil (soy bean) and a spoon of dishwater soap in 5 liters of water to treat black soot ( carried by ants who go for sap)  in my citrus plants. Repeat dose after two weeks.  Soap has action of lowering surface tension. This works.
I have seen some postings recommending use of neem oil.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Wind Storm Snapped The Tops Off my Papayas
« on: November 18, 2015, 05:10:37 PM »
When my papaya trees get too tall, I cut them about 2 meters height and cover the cut portion with a plastic bucket. I have noticed that several branches will sprout. I general trim extras and  keep a few. Otherwise I notice that the new fruits run small compared to original. Also you can plant the removed branches. Although these branches will not have a tap root, some will grow and yield flower and fruit.
Papaya sap works as a meat tenderizer and denaturates toxins of some insects

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Flacourtia rukam / indica
« on: November 01, 2015, 04:44:36 PM »
I have a single Flacoutia indica from seed I got from Goa,India more than 15 years back. It is a huge tree  (17 meters) and fruits once a year. When ripe I massage the fruit between my palms, then put in my mouth  and bite it to remove the seeds . The pulp and softened skin are quite sweet and tasty. Needless to say, the bats are also fond of them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is Garcinia xanthochymus dioecious?
« on: October 27, 2015, 10:14:45 AM »
Hi Oscar
My Garcinia indica is about 15 meters tall. It has never flowered or fruited.   Seed  was from Goa, India. Last year a friend from Kerala, South India sent me some seeds which sprouted and are seedlings.  Most Garcinias are slow to pick up except for Garcinia cumini. Do you agree ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Very good Spondias
« on: October 11, 2015, 08:16:28 AM »
I have Spondias purpura, dulcis and mombin in my garden.  Have a  red coloured Spondia I collected  whilst visiting  beautifull  San Cristobal de las Casas. Mexico   where it becomes chilly but I do not know if it snows . This spondia is a huge tree today. It flowers profusely in august but never fruits due to the warm climate of northeast Brazil. I am sure that this would fruit in Arizona

Hi Sobars
As your plants are not big and tall you could try copper sulphate or Copper oxide but there are more efficient products. Try to contact the Vengurla people or ICAR in Goa. They will orient you

If they happen to visit the  port city of  Recife in northeast Brazil  and let me know some days  in advance, I will be glad to take them to Central City  Market, show and  have them taste the fruits prevailing in the season. You can PM me their phone and date of visit

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ants, to kill or not to Kill
« on: September 26, 2015, 01:55:03 PM »
My garden has different types of ants and,  among these the cutter ants which really devour my citrus plants. I have been having  partial success using Mirex (sulphuramide) granules on their trail. They carry these granules in the underground   holes/nests  and I do not see their activity
after about 2-3 days.
I would like to know  the experience of other readers who have used sulphuramide granules.  Also I have noticed that cutter ants if not exterminated, they come back and attack the same tree when it spouts new leaves in preference to other nearby plants of the same type.
Do the ants have memory ? Do they leave traces of any substance  on the tree which they attacked previously and brings  them back ?  I also have noted that ants prefer young leaves or recently planted plants.

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Re: Vegetable thread
« on: September 20, 2015, 01:41:11 PM »
Did see your posting and found your proposal interesting. Maybe you could split your thread in two parts: Short duration vegetable plants and long duration vegetable plants:  Carrots, cucumbers, coriander, beans could be this group. On the other group could include Moringa oleifera (whose  green pods  and flowers are consumed as vegetable), Coccinea indica (the green fruit is consumed in curries or sauté) In this last group the tree or vine survives for long time.

Most probably the base part of your papaya tree will grow shoots.  I have many papaya trees in my garden. Many time when they grow too tall I simply chop off the top part one and half meter from ground level and cover with a plastic bucket. After a month or two, new shoots grow.
                                                              regards

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Wildlife in your fruit trees ?
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:42:51 PM »

This animal does not eat fruits but only Cecropia leaves and guess how is its water intake !

how does it drink?
Every 2-3 days it comes down from the tree and searches a puddle of water. It  sits on the puddle, relaxes its anal sphincter.Water creeps in; then it closes its anal sphincter, and  returns to the tree top ! Too lazy to drink water by the mouth !

What wild animals have you spotted in your fruit trees, your orchard or your farm? I have seen Screech Owls, Snapping turtles, Iguanas, Cuban Knight Anoles, Red Shoulder Hawks, Racoons, Opossums, Woodpeckers, Vultures, Snakes, and many others...

The worst pests are BY FAR...are squirrels and Racoons!  Iguanas also love to eat flowers, including Annona flowers!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: funny method for cleaning seeds
« on: June 04, 2015, 06:16:47 PM »
Will this technique  you propose work with Cupuassu seeds without destroying them  ?. The way I have learnt to clean Cupuassu seeds off pulp is to trim the pulp with a fine pointed scissors. Would welcome opinion of persons  experienced with this fruit
