Tropical Fruit Discussion / question about cacao trees
« on: November 13, 2014, 01:19:20 PM »
If you have a few different cacao varieties (ex.criollo, forastero, Trinitario, angustifolium) all planted around each other at appropriate distance would they cross pollinate or change the quality so that the seeds of a criollo next to a forastero will be a hybrid between both when you sprout the new criollo seeds or will they stay original to the mother tree. I just dont want hybridization to go on.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cola acuminata problem
« on: October 16, 2014, 02:33:37 PM »
My kola tree has been trying to grow a new set of leaves for 2 months now and they keep shriveling and turning brown before they develop. Anyone know the cause. Its in 30% sand,30% ocean forest and  the rest regular organic garden compost from lowes which I use for mostly everything and it does a good job.

81
I have both and Im wondering which one to put in my front yard as the main shade tree.

which one taste better, also does anyone know from experience the maximum height of both, I read 60 to 100 feet for the feuilleei and 30 feet for the laurina is that right.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / sapote de mico
« on: September 21, 2014, 02:16:44 PM »
Pouteria torta subps. gallifructa species.

Cant find any info on this species. some answers Ive been seeking,

does anyone know if it likes sun or shade when small, how big before it can stand full sun,
what soil conditions can it stand, drought, flooding, PH
How tall and wide does it get, and can you keep it trimmed to 10-15 feet
does it have a deep taproot or more spread out surface roots,
fertilizer needs,
cold it can take,
years to fruit,
biggest pest problem.

Thank you in advance. I have a couple of these growing and just trying to plan for the future and overall learn more about this interesting tree.

Just wondering for anyone who has experience. Running out of space in the yard, I have a honey gold jackfruit, thinking of keeping it about 30 feet. Also wondering if fruits fall from the very top or more lower down on the tree.

93
YES, I had it in the ground for 6 months and kept it well watered so the roots had time to expand, but during winter it went a whole night in the 30's and lost most of its leaves. I managed to water it with room temperature water twice a day and never let the soil dry out and it still had 3 leaves on it (burned but still there), and a few days later I watered it with rainwater when it was 45 outside (which so was the water) and all the leaves fell off the next day from too cold of water. So I kept watering it twice a day with room temperature water ( about 75 F) all winter and it looked like a stick so I assumed it died but figured Id still keep watering it, 2 months with no leaves and all of a sudden it sprang to life. Figure I would share my experience because I know its a tricky plant to grow here but its a lot hardier than what you read about it online, just make sure to keep the soil wet and dont let the water be colder than 60 degrees F but I would suggest at least 70 F to be sure, AND THERE WILL STILL BE HOPE ;D.

right after winter in march as a stick with a little green growth starting to appear, I didnt take a picture when it was completely bare due to sadness :'(
