Tropical Fruit Discussion / quantity/method of gypsum application
« on: March 29, 2018, 10:00:52 AM »
Just bought the property next to ours and inherited 2 mature mango trees in full flower! I'd like to experiment with gypsum but have no idea what would be the minimum amount to apply that could possibly be effective (gypsum is not cheap here like in the US so we can't just go willy-nilly), or how to apply it. Did a search but haven't found the info yet. Can someone point me in the right direction please? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best practices after a fire?
« on: March 25, 2018, 02:14:48 PM »
Hi all! We had a fire sweep through part of our property last week. Unbelievably we had only one total loss, a seedling sapodilla. But we have several trees that lost all or almost all of their leaves to the heat and are now left to recover from their still-green trunks. These include seedling starfruit and jackfruit, air-layered mulberry, and grafted mandarin and cara cara navel trees (happily still green above the grafts). My question is, what's the best thing to do to help the trees along in their recovery? Remove all the dead leaves, prune back at all, fertilize? Just leave them alone? Any suggestions are most appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / to transplant or not to transplant...?
« on: November 27, 2017, 03:27:15 PM »
I have a tree in a long skinny nursery bag, roots already coming out the bottom. I missed my chance to plant it out for this year, and have to wait for the next rainy season (May next year), so like 5 months. I'm tempted to transplant it to a 5 gallon bucket for the interim to give it a chance to spread its roots a bit and also get used to the native soil it will be planted out to, but I wonder if 5 months is a bit close between transplants. What do the experts say - move it, or wait out the 5 months in the small bag?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / help pruning young cherimoya
« on: October 08, 2017, 08:38:26 AM »
Hi all, I have a young (flowered this year for the first time) seedling cherimoya that grew straight up like a stick with all its leaves at the top. It can't stand up on its own it's so long and spindly, but I'm afraid to cut it back making it a leafless stick. Should I cut it? Will it survive? And if so, to what height? It's over 4 feet tall now, maybe close to 5. Thanks!

Just watched this video "Veneer Grafting with Walter Zill". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp_QOOLRTcI Great stuff, but now I'm confused. My understanding was that the cambium layer is the green line you see just under the bark, and that the goal was to line up the green line on the root stock with the green line on the scion. That would mean that lining up the edges would be key to success, and it's usually emphasized in the tutorials on grafting I've seen. But Mr. Zill centers his scion in a cut that's significantly bigger than the cut on the scion. How does that work? Can someone help me with what must be some basic concepts that I'm missing? Thanks!

I've got a cherimoya carrying it's first fruit, and its nursery bag is disintegrating. Oops. I wonder if planting it out at this point will be any more traumatic than giving it a new bag? Is there any way I could expect to save the fruit, or will I lose it because of the transplant? I was so looking forward to trying this fruit!
Second question, will cherimoya do ok on a mountainside where it gets morning sun but will have to get a bit taller to reach the afternoon sun? Or does it really need all day full sun to grow well?
Thanks for any input!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / mango id please
« on: June 26, 2017, 04:52:51 PM »
The guy insisted they were Hadens but no way - different taste, almost no fiber, and to me the shape is off. Any guesses from the experts?

I'm clearly missing a basic concept here. Can someone please explain - how can a vigorous tree also be a small tree? Seems like a vigorous tree would automatically be a large tree and a low-vigor tree would be a small tree, but that's not the case. So what does vigor refer to?

Citrus General Discussion / Help! can this baby Meyer be saved???
« on: June 21, 2017, 11:08:55 AM »
Not long ago this little guy was healthy. Then it started yellowing, then curling, now it's got the brown spots and all of the above. It's definitely deteriorating.  :'( What does it have and can anything be done? Thanks in advance...

Friend's mother in law has mango tree with these growths - look like something parasitic to me. He calls it a disease and says it also causes black spots on the fruit but that seems like it's probably anthracnose and not related? Anyone recognize these "nudos"? He says he's seen them on other mango trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / photo of Irwin mango?
« on: June 16, 2017, 10:36:59 AM »
Without delving into a discussion of its attributes or lack thereof, can anyone post or direct me to a photo of a ripe Irwin mango? Online sources that sell it have conflicting photos and I don't know which, if any, are the real deal. Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / leaves curled under from tips
« on: June 02, 2017, 01:48:47 PM »
Hi all. The leaves of my little meyer lemon are notably curled under from the tips. Any ideas of the cause of this?

A (citrus) plant shipped to me from another state was supposed to be in transport 2 days got stuck in the warehouse for over a week and lost all its leaves. It's flushing now, with tiny leaves just starting to come out. Question is, can I fertilize it at this point to give it a boost or should I let the leaves fill out first?

Thinking about tree placement in terms of street visibility. I'm wondering about the color of the following varieties at picking time:
Venus
Pickering
Maha
Sweet tart
Kesar
Phoenix
Honey kiss

Also, do these varieties ripen on the tree or off or some combination of the two? TIA

to ship to Miami. Can anyone point me in the right direction? TIA!

Hi all. I'm super-tempted by the tt description of the Honeymoon variegated guava. But I know they're selling plants and don't always have the most accurate descriptions. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this variety? I'm looking for a great tasting fruit on the less mealy (for a guava) side. Does this one qualify?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB avocado scions
« on: April 26, 2017, 10:57:56 AM »
Hi everyone! I'm desperately seeking scions of:
Nishikawa
Wurtz
Day
Kampong
I'll of course pay for the scion, your trouble, and shipping to Miami. Happy to wait for the best time to take quality scions - I don't know when that is - for the best chance that the grafts take.
Any leads please let me know! Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / E. uniflora tip dieback
« on: April 03, 2017, 10:56:15 AM »
Hi all,
All of my in ground surinam cherries are growing well except for pretty much constant tip dieback - what gives? The new growth dries out, turns brown and shrivels up. It's not all the tips so the plants keep growing, but the dieback is frustrating and I can't figure out why it's happening. Has anyone else experienced this, or have an idea of the cause/a solution? Thanks!
Sorry for the awful photo - the sun was going down and there wasn't enough light to focus where I wanted. The two blurry brown blobs in the foreground are good examples of the dieback I'm talking about  :P, and in the center top background there's actually one in focus if you look closely.

Citrus General Discussion / what's going on with my mandarin?
« on: April 03, 2017, 10:48:59 AM »
Hi everyone, I have a mandarin tree that I stupidly let hold quite a few fruit last year, its first year in the ground. Since then it's been completely dormant while the other citrus planted at the same time have been putting on tons of growth. So that's to be expected and I wasn't worried, except that the leaves started showing the discoloration you see in the photos. For awhile it's been like this and hasn't put out a single new leaf. Now finally it's covered with buds, which is encouraging, but I'm still wondering what if anything I should be doing about the issues with the older leaves - I'd prefer the new leaves not end up looking the same. Is it a nutrient issue? I can't match it to the photos I find online of any particular deficiency. Thanks for your input!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cherimoya first flowers - advice needed
« on: March 22, 2017, 01:20:13 PM »
Hi all! I have 2 seedling El Bumpos, one is in-ground since July of last year and the other (which germinated around the same time but has always lagged behind the other in size) is still in a medium nursery bag on the patio - I was going to plant it out at the start of the rainy season this year. It recently lost all its leaves, and now is budding out including what I'm almost sure are 4 flower buds! I'm in a marginal climate for cherimoya and was doubting they would ever fruit, but this one looks like at least it wants to try! Anyway, questions are,
why is the one in the bag flowering and not the one in the ground?
does it have a chance to hold fruit being in a relatively small bag?
is there anything in particular I should do for the flowering plant to encourage it to hold a fruit?
Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / BuyRareSeeds.com?
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:42:09 PM »
I'm thinking of buying some Plukenetia Huayllabambana seeds from them but not if they're not reliable. Anyone have any experience good or bad to share?

I've planted like a million Honeymoon guava seeds. Germination is like 99%, but they all die before a set of true leaves can form - cotyledons turn brown from the tips and that's all she wrote. I've read this is common, but knowing that doesn't help much. Has anyone successfully gotten a plant from one of these seeds? Any suggestions on how to do it?
