Found this video.  Its geared towards stone fruit but I am going to do this on all my stone fruit, avocado and mango trees this year.  Any south/SW exposed trunks are getting 50/50 INTERIOR flat whitet latex water based paint.  Just an FYI if you want to try Samu.

https://youtu.be/3qJtVd2k_lI

Informative and logical solution for sunburn and cracks in fruit tree trunks. Only interior latex because exterior latex paint usually / might have fungicide added.

I think the paint might also seal in some tree moisture in a good way....that helps the crack area to heal. It cannot heal when the sun is beating down on it each day thus evaporating out moisture.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First Mangos of 2018

I went by Alex's- place and bought a few bags of mangos this past week-- and there fantastic--juicy and sweet-- - its wonderful to wake up every morning and eat 4-5 of them !!YES
Alex's place is the Ponderosa Ranch of mangoes.... is amazing with their 50ft tall Edward trees and a tremendous assortment of varieties. Now is probably the best time to see. Before the mango season kicks into high gear.

Avocados and other fruits grown there too.

Since you are on the verge of giving up on this tree......
As a last ditch effort. I would try packing moist clay into this large gap and crack. I would buy clay from a crafts store that is used for making pottery. You want this level of moisture in your clay.  Loosely wrap trunk + clay with plastic, but guard against rot. Clay can do many interesting things and maybe it will help this gap get bridged and heal.
If you don't want to buy clay then dig some clay soil from your yard if you have it.

Trees do amazing things. We have all seen tree limbs that have grown into cyclone fences. I saw a tree that grew right into, up and over a one inch iron bar. I must take a photo of it. The bar is right in the middle of a five inch diameter trunk of a common landscaping tree, about two ft up from the ground. It must have been a support that was forgotten about.

"it possesses qualities that give it potential for wider commercial adaptation. These include flavor, excellent production, and very good disease resistance."  Read its Wikipedia entry

Why treadmill? I do a 4 mile fast walk outside every morning.
1.The treadmill has some flex to it vs. concrete. (less stress on joints/ligaments/tendons)
2. Almost zero chance of turning an ankle vs. over grass or unknown concrete cracks/roots/rocks/etc.
3. Able to better ignore where I'm going and what I'm traversing
4. I'm better able to forget the present activity  8)    a. Visually and b. Audibly focus on T.V. etc. I enjoy the HGVT, Travel Channel, Animal Planet, PBS, cnbc, etc. vs. Audibly only on headphones alone. Thus time seems to pass faster imo when on the treadmill at home.
5. Turn the a/c on if needed, turn the fan on if needed vs. pot luck outside for elements heat, rain, sun, etc.
6. Decrease an hour accumulation of sun damage to skin as I already spend so much time outdoors in the sun with the fruit trees.
7. Pick up a water bottle on the treadmill to swig a drink easily vs. carrying in hand while walking outdoors.

None of the other multitude of reasons are of much concern to me like decrease chance of:::  a. drive by shooting victum,  b. other attacks on the street,   c. dog bites, or d. car hitting you while driver is having a stroke/heart attack/seizure, etc. etc. etc.

Interesting what your outdoor walking negatives are. None would be a factor for me. BUT what would be a factor if I lived in a rural situation (like it seems you are) is that the roads are more dangerous for walking than in the suburbs where I am. As in rural roads will have more speeders. No sidewalks.       And more reckless and or drunk speeders. Add drivers on legal and illegal drugs to the mix.    Me remembering when Steven King the novelist was out for a walk on a rural road and got severely injured by a van driver in broad daylight. The driver claimed his dog distracted him.

Today, after completing my treadmill walk,  I went outside and am now enjoying a few mulberries under the mulberry tree canopy.

My wife made some mulberry juice from a few extra bags removed from the freezer. I was surprised that the freezer taste had disappeared and it was good.

I still prefer eating fresh over frozen.

Why treadmill? I do a 4 mile fast walk outside every morning. My goal is 72 minutes. I figure I do a mile in 17.5 to 18 minutes. I bring my mp3 player but only listen in the last 1/3rd of my walk.
Today I did 74 minutes. Sometimes I am below, sometimes above my 72min goal.

On mp3 player is not just music but talk by various people such as Jordan Peterson. You can "grab" all this off of youtube. My fave mp3 player is agptek 8MB you can find ebay and amazon. I have a sansa 8MB Jam too but battery is failing. I like agptek more better.

I still prefer eating fresh over frozen.

Fresh and backyard ripe is why I don't mess around with smoothies. Each fruit evaluated unadulterated and on its own.

Cutlass or even Cut-lash is a common name for it in the English speaking Caribbean islands.
Get your cutlasses sharpened for "Talk Like A Pirate Day" coming up. Be prepared to brandish them.

This is the full video link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh1AnvNa6mc

Daintree the other species you speak of have their own natural form, growth habits and preferences, and might need different strategies to "bend them according to your will" as mentioned in the video. Soursop, for instance, bears on woody branches instead of new flowering tips like mango does so you have to consider that.

The instructor says use the right pruning tools. He holds up a machete says don't use this, he  calls it a cutlass which is very cool. Video is from Ghana it seems. I have to rewind to get a good opinion but the instructor seems smart and knowledgeable. From now on when I show a newbie my machetes I am going to call them cutlasses and look for the reaction.

Great photo of your Carrie tree right by the street. Added to Carrie fruits looking unassuming and non colorful so less of a mango thief magnet. This is what perimeter planting is all about! You are beautifying your neighborhood too, for all who walk and drive by.

Best of luck with your C harvest and pretty soon you will not be able to park under it.

« on: March 25, 2018, 01:30:38 PM »
The internet says most avocados in Vietnam are used in smoothies and drinks which to me is about the worst way to use them. Maybe in bubble tea also>
Yeah, almost people dont know how to eat avocado but everything ard changing d
ay by day

Loads of Vietnamese and Chinese food would be enhanced by simple avocado slices on the side. That you eat the avocado slices as you eat the Viet and Chinese food. No need to make guacamole. Also avocados go along great with soy sauce and ginger juice. Hey, add some Vietnamese fish sauce and chopped garlic and|or onion. You can mash that all together but cut up avocado is also good with soy sauce-ginger-garlic-onion.

Have you ever had an Avocado smoothie (Sinh tố bơ)?  I have... very good... but not as good as a Mango smoothie IMO.

I just don't eat/drink smoothies. I can't remember when I last time I had one. My personal prejudice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dot mango dying in SoCal
« on: March 22, 2018, 06:10:35 AM »
Good info on Dot. Thanks.

Out of curiosity what disease problems does Dot have in Florida?  I have always heard it is disease prone but nothing specific that I can remember. Is it powdery mildew?

Bill

iirc the classic problem with Julie and Dot is anthracnose. Others will know for sure.

But to maximize morning dew burn off plant the tree in a place on your property where the morning sun will hit it during mango season   .... most of your fog is in the morning? I am guessing because this is how it is here. So maximum morning sun will help that too.
Also plant where it will get southern exposure.   The one Julie tree I know is planted w southern exposure.   I have no Dot or Julie. The fungus problems scared me off. Though if I had a larger property with room to experiment I would have tried Julie.

Thanks Frank, I might have to do that if my new Dot can't prove its self in our local environment. What variety is HK?

Just say the magic word "Smathers" when you walk past your new dot mango tree.

1998  --
Frank Smathers Jr.

MIAMI (AP) _ Frank Smathers Jr., who made a fortune in the banking business, died Tuesday. He was 88.
Smathers was the brother of former U.S. Sen. George Smathers and the son of Frank Smathers Sr., a former federal judge who managed Woodrow Wilson's campaign for president.

Frank Smathers started at the old Miami Beach First National Bank, where he rose to chairman. He created new banks under the corporate umbrella of Flagship Banks and retired as chairman of Flagship in 1976. In 1983, the sale of Flagship Sun Banks _ now SunTrust _ earned him millions.
Known for his passion for growing mangoes, he recently gave $1 million to the University of Miami to finance the study of tropical fruit trees.

and http://www.miamiherald.com/latest-news/article1940225.html

and from wikipedia-
'Dot' was originally developed by nurseryman Laurence Zill of Boynton Beach, Florida, and was named after his wife Dorothy. It was reportedly a seedling of the 'Carrie' mango, however a 2005 pedigree analysis by the USDA estimated it was a seedling of the 'Zill' mango.[1] 'Dot' was propagated for several years by the Zill nursery but fell out of favor due to disease susceptibility and lack of ideal color. However, Frank Smathers of Miami, Florida received several cuttings of the Dot and took up propagating the tree, finding the eating quality of the fruit to be very high.

Good for your new ST tree! It will be a good year in general for Eastern South Florida mangoes. Must be the same for Western South Florida. When I drive around it is very nice to see most mango trees loaded with marble size mangoes or a bit larger.  Some smaller but still there. Now we have to wait.

Universal Enterprises Supply Corp in Pompano has 0-0-51 50lbs bags for around $30. I was there recently to get some Sequestrene 138 and their prices cannot be beat. Here is their website --> http://universalsupplycorp.com  - I always call them to make sure they have what I need in stock.

Granular or quick dissolving? Granular being little brownish balls the size of a wheat grain and the quick dissolve being a powder. And going by internet images a white powder.

As far as Universal Supply in Broward  goes---  Universal Enterprises Supply Corp.  -they also have a website
Address: 2171 Blount Rd, Pompano Beach, FL 33069
 Phone: (954) 979-0600
____________________

They have 50lbs of 0 0 52 Potassium Sulfate. This is quick dissolve and used by "the palm tree guys" to quote them. $32.50 per bag and they should usually have this in stock
I asked about the granular version. He said he would get back to me on what the minimum order of bags would be.

If I cannot get a minimum order going with members here then I will buy their quick dissolve powder that is typically used in irrigation systems.  And just toss a little bit on top of my mango tree's mulch every two weeks. And definitely wear a respirator when doing so.

Amazon respirators ...a  must use if dealing with tree trimmer's mulch which puts out mold spores when you handle it.

How about Vigoro brand sold by Home Depot:

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-20-lb-Citrus-and-Avocado-Plant-Food-160327/203091325. (Promoted as "slow release Nitrogen for extended feeding").

The N-P-K ratio is about half to that of Osmocote Plus, but the minors are similar. Don't know how good or effective this brand is, but the it's priced lower than Osmocote: $14.98/20 lb bag. The 40lb bag price is even better: $19.48! Any thought?

Lowes also has similar in 40lb bag for $15  ......  I have to revise about HD and Lowes 6-4-6 slow release nitrogen fertilizers with minors. It seems that only a third or so of the nitrogen is coated to make it slow release.
Does anyone know how much of the nitrogen is polymer coated to make it slow release in the 8 3 9 sold in South Florida by Excalibur and others? Also by Universal Supply in Broward as fruitilizer?

Sometimes you just get (buy) a weak specimen. You were right to get another Dot. Anyone have theories on mango trees that don't pan out? Might have to do with how they were treated when in one gallon and smaller. Maybe poor root formation.

0 0 50 K in granular form so slow dissolve was great. It was 50lbs for about $26.  Unfortunately Universal Supply in Broward stopped carrying it.  I am going to phone them but last time we spoke it was one ton minimum order. Maybe I can get then down to half ton minimum order if other members want to buy in. Half ton would be 20 50lb bags to distribute. This 0 0 50 granular K is good for older trees that don't need much nitrogen because this only means faster growth so more pruning.
I am fairly sure it was from Diamond-K

I use K-mag from diamond R
0 0 22 with 15 magnesium and a little sulfur to boot

That is quick dissolve and for "fertigation" according to what I see on internet  http://www.7springsfarm.com/kmag-50-lb-sulpomag-diamond-k-brand-water-soluble-0-0-21-5/

HD and Lowe's have their own brand slow release nitrogen fertilizer that has micro- elements. Bags come in different sizes. There are superior fertilizers but if you want convenience head to HD or Lowe's

Vigoro --- Citrus and Avocado Plant Food  -comes in a few sizes---Lowe's has similar
