Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Soursop and Guava
« on: July 12, 2017, 12:32:25 PM »
I live a mile west of thevSt Lucie river in PSL so maybe I will do ok with the soursop this winter, the leaves get a black fungus , just some and using copper to control. The Walmart guava is three months in the ground, growing well and holding a handful of egg sized green fruit. I hate to waste time on a tasteless variety, time will tell. I bought it for the health benefits of high vitamin C.

I recently planted these from a 3 gallon container and wonder what to expect. The soursop was from seed and is 3 feet tall, the Guava came from Walmart with a ,Pine ,island info tag but no variety name other than showing a pink inside . What variety might this be?

Well,on the advice of our local nursery man I selected the Brogdon. Also I bought a guava at Walmart and the tag shows a picture of a pink meat variety but no specific name and the label is from Pine Island Nursery. Any idea of the variety?

I want to add another avocado to my yard . I live in zone9b. Currently I have three others: Lila, Day and Oro Negro. We have a problem in Florida with the ambrosia beetle killing avocados so I want to hedge my bet by having several. So far the Lula is the only one bearing but I find the fruit bland. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Well live and learn. I called Nelson Family Farms in Ft. pierce, a gentleman there knew the  question well, he said thy have no idea what it is and went on to say they wished the buyer would quit buying these, the same is true he went on to say with the papayas they get. He further added he thinks it is the non astring variety but could not be sure and I would have to wait and seek. Needless to say I am not happy and mad at myself to buying it and trusted them to sell a variety that does well here in PSL. Darn.

Nola gets some very cold winters, some days in the 30's and less. Not sure it will make it there.

I recently bought a persimmon tree from a farm stand retailer and it was labeled Florida Persimmon. Can anyone share any experience with this variety, I assume it is the astringent variety.

Germination. Trying to attract night flying insects to my dragon fruits by planting night blooming jasmine nearby. Anyone try this. I can't get the hang of hand pollinating.

Funny I am from New Orleans. The soil here is loam and a lot of sand, average ph is 8.0. I have it mulched with pine bark and pit coffee grounds on it, it looks healthy just static with few new leaves bot leaves green. Gets regular water fron lawn irrigation and hose sullpement all water is well water.

I bought a grumpy 4 years ago in a 7 gallon  container, since then I have tried to baby it but it grows little but does flower but only 6 fruits this year. Could it have been in the pot too long? And will it recover? I hate to dig it up but 4 years is a lot when you are 73 years old. Advice please. It is getting a lot of sun with a southern exposure, water, fertilizer, micro nutrients.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sulphur on mango
« on: June 15, 2017, 09:37:47 PM »
I recently learned to spray sulphur on my mangoes if I have powdery mildew, what is it, how is it applied, is it in powder form or is it sold by another name. I don't have the problem yet but want to learn. What amounts to use.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jujube
« on: June 10, 2017, 01:02:53 PM »
Greenman, I lived in New Orleans for 68 years before moving to Florida Treasure Coast. The jujube I have came from a local reseller and he said it was a Thai variety, got a dozen fruit the first season even though the tree was just planted 6 months earlier.  Was not used to fruit tree while in Nola except for figs and Japanese plums. Had I known about Jujube then I would have had some. The soil in Nola is heavy grey clay and does not drain quickly, here it is the opposite and is very sandy with high ph.

I have a Carrie and agree with Cookie, they are edible when the stem end shows yellow, if you wait past that then the tip end (bottom) gets mushy, but still delightful. You can eat  Carrie with a spoon like a sorbet, seed is small too and absolutely no fiber. No coconut taste though if you like that.theskin is very thin.
