Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Planting in Heavy Clay Soil
« on: October 16, 2013, 03:05:12 PM »
Something I read which sounded logical, if you have clay heavy soil and plan on backfilling you should pack the immediate root ball with the original heavy clay soil to prevent it from drowning as easily if or when the hole gets water logged.

52
Mission completed? Or lack of nutrients,  excessive water.. pics?

53
The tree was not grafted I know so it was from seed im assuming. Beyond that idk much about it, figured it was common but not uncommon taste.. I can get seeds, I would wait to mail them till I leave to the us or possibly in quito but the postage is like 10usd for a postcard.. Ill see what the future holds, id like to taste a bad annonia glabra before I get anyones hopes up also..

I would say it was good but still nothing on a cherimoya. It tasted sweet and a hint of fruity.. blah, tastes are hard to descripe. The amount of seeds was off putting so I cut the skin off and cut the flesh segment off the seeds, and the other fellow in the video had them made into juice by blending with water and straining which was very good. No soapy flavour which id say is a flavour that is a little oily and lingering with a hint of bitter or chalk.

Pond Apple, Rio Cuasa, Ecuador

maybe this helps? It did have smooth skin, photo may have tricked the eyes. Not the best video but more to look at for sure.

It seems like what pond apple is described as but definitely tastes good, ive never had any other pond apple, it is the later part of the dry season and is growing in heavy clay soil. Cant say I have much else for info. Possibly just that some things seem to grow very well in ecuador? The bananas are most delicous ive had being just a tad better than in hawaii, but the specifics of soil, grower, cultivar etc make all the difference.

55
Thank you, it tastes decent, nothing compared to cherimoya but much better than soursop and great still made into juice byblending with water and straining.

56
:o  so I was giving the name tootie fruitie which led to obvious mixed results online aanyone know alternate names or botanical name? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Contest for organizing the forum
« on: October 09, 2013, 09:23:58 PM »
I was just thinking maybe we could start one or more contests for people creating awesome posts organizing already awesome threads into one post and possibly editting it with updates. Or adding more info onto the fruit list or starting seperate editable documents contIning columns for all sorts of things that are interesting or valueable.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aoy4d4hcUHo3dGppM3kyc2RXYmtxQUxTS2FUSXhPZmc

In posts miht be better to attract more people from google searches etc. But we could do both also?

The prizes could be free seeds or something donated by members for ad space in the contest or something else?

yay nay or something similar?

Thats why its here, needs work!  ;D  I got all the info from the past couple days of searching books.google.com , fruitipedia, wiki and similar places. It would be nice to find out preferred species or cultivars and their specifc ideal parameters although I doubt theres any info out on most of those besides some lesser known books and one of the best resources probably being people on this forum that grow them.

64
1. Durian

I know of the crfg list with minimum temps but I wish it had desired rainfall and optimal temps, which I understand is a bit of work but also fun and worth it id say. So here is my list so far if you can add some fruits and possibly annual rainfall, optimal tempuratures and other useful info, but keep it a bit short, or make it long! Forgive sloppiness im on a tablet travelling currently.

Hi Jason, welcome to the group! Are you able to find any durian there in Ecuador?

I have not found any yet but I heard of it being at least two places, up near san isidro, north of esmeraldas and at jims finca. Priority is finding nice land right now, then getting seeds or graftings!  Im very excited for it as its been at least 2 solid years of preparation.

I am new here, my name is Jason. I am in ecuador trying to find ideal land to grow fruits of a wide variety. I eat mostly fruit and some greens n sometimes potatoes n soup. Locals think im crazy but thats nothig new, been raw vegan for 4 years. It led me to fruit love and to moving to the tropics. Recently I realized ive become a hippie pretty much. I was from the united gates, and im addicted to durian, I wish I never tried it because it makes other fruits less amazing by comparison, but its too late now.

Im also a Master Herbalist, into natural healing, love aquaponics and permaculture, been reading as a guest for a year and lots lately so I joined and ill hit you with questions I havent found results for in the search sometime soon... I like your place here thanks for keeping it alive and growing fruit!

 ;D
