I, for one,  am bit unhappy with this forum and its founders.  It seems that it causes me to spend an inordinate amount of time reading and writing about tropical fruit trees, and other less important subjects, taking me away from my work and family.  One particular moderator/administrator/founder is highly capricious and dictatorial. And there are numerous members that cause me tremendous tropical fruit envy.  So thanks a lot for forcing me to hang out in this forum, suffering all the while.  I will definitely be making a New Year's resolution to continue and intensify my complaints as outlined above.  ;)
I am in the same boat, thanks for the good work

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Using beach sand for loamy soil
« on: November 28, 2013, 10:45:18 PM »
the beach sand in Fla is no good and protected, made from crushed coral it will raise the ph. if the sand is made from silica or any non limestone would be ok, salt washes off, i have never been to Cali so i dont know what the sand is like.

i love them at almost all stages of ripeness once they are red. picking off the end helps a lot

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugar Cane Juicer
« on: November 28, 2013, 10:36:54 PM »
regular juicers make the juice fibrous because they cut the fibers too much, i have tried with the wife's omega, working with a friend on building one seeing if we can do it for less than $600.

Mine grew best when i mulch heavy and added compost and dirt burying  the canes like 10 in or so and watered it a lot they add a lot of roots in the mounds

they like fertile soil and water

« on: November 07, 2013, 05:28:26 AM »
I had to laugh when I saw Arlin carambolas at the supermarket, totally green and unripe, for $1.99 each.   It's funny because they are so way to grow and fruit prolifically in Florida.

Brad

i agree 100%, the ones from the store are only for decoration not food, it is ridiculous that they charge so much.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: seaweed on your plants?
« on: November 05, 2013, 05:29:43 AM »
seaweed is algae and seagrass is a flowering plant ;D, the algae seems to completely disintegrate and the sea grass leaves humus. I'm in the lower keys so I get a lot of both.
I would think different kinds of algae or sea grass would have different minerals in them. The red jelly like ones are a source of agar, but i have no idea how to process it.

I've read about 3 different plants called miracle fruit, the kind people usually see here, a plant that looks like ginger and a vine in India that makes sweet stuff not sweet. I didn't know there were a small leaf and a big leaf kind.

We get lots of seaweed wash up in Bermuda, mostly in the winter but sometimes in the summer.  It works wonders for plants.  I have seen beaches completely covered with several feet thick of it.  Funny to hear beach goers complain while knowledgable food growers are happy...if only trucking wasn't so expensive.  I get trash bags full at a time.  If it is left on off the beaten path beaches long enough it dries allowing one to get much greater volumes (fresh seaweed has a lot of water).

This is the dry seaweed we get in the Florida Keys. Once the sun hits it for a few hours its dehydrated. Does one washes or rinses to eliminate as much salt as possible and mulch with it. Not sure how to use. I can get quite a bit.

Thatīs what i use i wash it one time really good and mulch with it
