Tropical Fruit Discussion / I.D. this S. African seedling please!
« on: May 03, 2015, 10:21:50 PM »
Hi,
So, a while back I bought some seeds from Stuart Daly in South Africa.
Some of them never sprouted (I thought...), so I threw the potting mix back into the "hopper".  Then lo and behold, I got a seedling!!!
But... I don't know what it is!
It SHOULD be strychnos pungent, strychnos spinosa, or dialium schlechteri.

Help!

Thanks!

Carolyn

I know there is a source here, Logees always sends healthy well package plants.

http://www.logees.com/kava-kava-piper-methysticum.html

Btw, how is everything going Carolyn? Did the Aframomum sp. get a lot bigger for you?

Thanks!
The aframomum is doing great - potting up to a bigger size like you recommended really made it go crazy!

Does anyone have any kava seedlings for sale?

Thanks!
Carolyn

Well, a greenhouse doesn't always mean "safety".  I spend a lot of late nights out there with a flashlight, tracking down theobroma-eating culprits.  Those nasty earwigs!
BTW - I brought seeds back from Hawaii in mid-January, and the plants are about 6 inches tall now..

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Filter for garden hose
« on: February 04, 2015, 10:39:09 PM »
I have a filter mounted to the wall in the greenhouse, and the hose from the house goes in one side, and the hose to the greenhouse pond comes out the other (the pond is my watering source for the greenhouse.  I heat it in the winter so the plants don't get 'cold feet' when I water them...).  I can unscrew the canister when I need to replace the filter.  I bought the whole thing at our local plumbing and electrical supply place.  Makes my plants happy  :D

I can vouch for Stuart's marula seeds!  I have two dozen growing in my greenhouse right now.

I have bought seeds from Rarepalmseeds.com before, and they arrived in good condition and some did germinate.  I have not bought tagua seeds from them, but they carry them.  They are in Germany.
Good luck!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Soil Prep Question
« on: December 27, 2014, 06:37:24 PM »
Wow, that can be really tough.  We are high desert here in Idaho and probably have many of the same problems you do (naturally sweet soil and low rainfall).
To raise pH organically takes a lot of time.  I tried for several years to lower my soil pH for my blueberries before switching to growing in pots.  The problem with treating the garden soil is that the pH keeps creeping back up over time.  You have to add a non-stop supply of stuff.  I had the best luck with LOTS of manure and pine needles.  You can use sulphur, but I have never messed with it. Somehow it just struck me as vaguely dangerous, but I don't know why I thought that...
You can try the "pot in the ground" method of containing the trees in buried pots.  Or just keep pouring the manure and pine needles on.  The peat moss would probably work, but can you GET that much peat moss?
Good luck and happy growing!

I have never used Captan, mainly because back when I first started looking for fungicides, it was labeled as a carcinogen.  Supposedly the labeling has changed though.  Also it is super toxic to sheep, which I used to have.  Maybe you can get Physan 20 online.  http://www.physan.com/
Or maybe you local store can order you some.  But I don't know - is that sort of thing hard to get in Iceland?

I use Physan 20.  Not sure if you can get it there, or what the brand name would be called there.  The label says it is 10% dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride and 10% ethylbenzyl ammonium chloride.
You can mix it up in different strengths for different things.
I use it in a stronger solution to scrub my greenhouse walls, and a milder solution for soaking seeds (and really, I only just dip them in it for a minute or so.  I don't let them sit in it for a long time, since like you said, some seeds do not appreciate a bath), and the most important for me, spraying seedlings to prevent damping off.  It works REALLY well to prevent damping off.  I LOVE the stuff. I also use it to sterilize my pots before re-use.
I have not had good luck with bleach when it comes to killing mold and NOT killing seedlings.

Dig a pit in your backyard, and use the leaves to roast a goat!
Yum yum!

Maybe we should start a thread of goofy typos in plant literature...

« on: December 13, 2014, 10:13:50 AM »
I LOVE using H2O2!
In addition to soaking seeds in it, I also water seedlings with it.  It is supposed to get more oxygen to their little baby roots.
I have done experiments by planting two batches of seeds at the same time and watering half with the H2O2 and fertilizer mix and the other with just fertilizer water.  The H2O2 does way better.
If you buy the 3% from the grocery store, I find that 1/2 cup per gallon works best.
But I have switched to the 12% that you can buy from a hair salon (I guess folks use it to bleach their hair - I know it sure ruins a shirt fast if you splash it!!), and then I only have to use 2 Tbs per gallon.
I tried soaking seeds in straight 3% H2O2 but nothing germinated. Maybe they would have anyway?

Millet,
I have questions about your heaters!
After this latest cold snap, I have been looking at the Modine Hot Dawg heaters.
I just have a blue flame gas furnace right now, and some parts of the greenhouse get much colder than others.
Do you find these heaters are fairly economical (I mean, considering the temps we deal with in Idaho and Colorado...)?
Where did you get yours?  I was looking at the catalogue from the Greenhouse Megastore.

Also, I don't understand why greenhouse heaters are mounted high on the wall.  Seems you'd want to put more hot air down where the plants are, and let it warm the area from the bottom up.

Thanks for any info!
Carolyn

Do you test your own soil (I have the little NPK kit that I bought at the nursey), or do you take it to a lab?

We are up against the same thing here in Idaho right now, with Simplot and a new potato they have.  It doesn't even have genes from anything else - they just removed the genes that create high starch and acrylamide (a carcinogen).
The farmers want to grow them because they don't bruise and brown as easily, and they are better for you, but McDonalds buys most of their potatoes, and they are refusing to buy these because of public opinion, or who knows, maybe McDonalds is creating the hype and the public is following along.
Round and round it goes.

Sounds great, but how do you combat the public relations problems due to people thinking they will grow a third arm out of their forehead from eating those citrus?

Do you have to heat it, or is the ground warm enough to keep the plants warm?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cold and snowing at my greenhouse!
« on: November 14, 2014, 06:11:16 PM »
Hey, EVERYONE is welcome at my greenhouse!  I love to show it off, so DO knock on the door in the winter - there will probably be a pot of hot cocoa plugged in out there. ;D
My husband built an awesome pizza oven in the back yard, so tours usually turn into parties...
Right now my coffee is blooming and fruiting, I have a few pineapples flowering, and of course most of the citrus started blooming as soon as temp dropped.  I still have a few lemons, limes and kaffir limes ripening too.
Oh, the gardenia is blooming, and the vanilla orchid is close.  I just a monstera fruit last week and a few more are looking close, I have gnawed my way through some of the sugar cane (found out too late how to press it...), and my epiphyllum blooms every night (most I had on one night was 20.  The smell was profound!).
But that is all.  Other than that, everybody is too young to fruit yet. :(

Well, that's why I built it - I want what you all have (only without the cockroaches, scorpions and chiggers)...

Heat!
Humidity!
Greenery!
