I just potted up some seedling Golden Pearls ( Solanum villosum) and Wonderberry (Solanum retroflexum). I have extra seedlings of both if anyone wants to pick up the seed tray. I'm in Lake Forest, CA.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone grow black goji berry?

I ordered some from http://www.plant-world-seeds.com/store/view_seed_item/5539?itemname=GOJI+BERRY+BLACK+PEARLS

I had nearly full germination in January but they seem much more delicate plants then normal goji. Out of 20 seedling only 7 survived to be potted up to 1 gallon pots.

Thanks all for the useful information. Scott, I hadn't known that about their salt tolerance/preference ,  good to know. I have a sunny spot near where my orange goji thrive. I might just visit the beach to collect a very small amount of beach sand to mix in with native loam where these will end up. Thanks again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Training my mulberry
« on: February 06, 2017, 12:19:24 AM »
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I'll be cutting off most vertical growth, and keep 2 or 3 well placed new branches to train downwards each year. The M. Nigras, or at least this one, is a lot slower growing than the Albas I've seen, so I'm not too concerned about it becoming a monster any time soon.

Some of what I've read says it induces hormones that increase production.

I have soon black going that recently germinated. I've heard they are harder to get established then normal goji, with high die offs especially in the hardening off phase. Anyone have some experience with these with advice to share? Soil mixes etc that have worked well?

I love the fruits of my Morus nigra, but production seems concentrated on branches naturally bending down. I read that bending down branches promotes production and reduces vertical vigor. Any one know how effective this is on mulberry?

The home Depot in Lake forest have been carrying this brand's Hailey comet for a couple months. Was pleased to see they finally had a named variety.

I just visited the site, still looks on to me. Sucks, I'll be in Costa Rica at the time. Poor me...

Gary is also just a nice guy. Knows his stuff, especially when it comes to soil. I buy odds and ends from him though his selection is not necessarily for crazy zone pushers. He stocks mostly plants he knows will thrive in the orange county area. Good selection of those. Nice source of figs too.

My favorite by far is Silas Wood.  But I'm a candy junkie and taste is subjective. Fruits are small but it produces a lot and started producing while quite small. Super sweet.

My Morena has great vigorous upright growth and production. But I let them rot as I'm not fond of their strong taste. Looking to trade it out for an Alano if anyone is interested in my area. Currently in a 15 gal.

The cherimoya tasting in Irvine mentioned  is a must.  Free, usually a dozen plus varieties,  and you can purchase bags of them at an extremely low price to take away.

Yeah, good idea. I have a couple that I'm trying to root now. Also just added purple possum and Red Rover earlier this year. I'll have to check those and see if they are infected like the Frederick.

Thanks. Joy, a new type of scale to add to my colllection.

Hi, can anyone identify these? Discovered while cutting back my passion fruit. New to my garden. Thanks.

Solko probably has the right idea here, but instead of picking,  I'd take the whole darn branch with fruits still attached, put the branches in a pail of water and take indoors to ripen naturally on the branch. Branches should survive a month or two, especially if you remove leaves. It's not ideal, and I've never had to do it, but it might work.

They are commonly used for landscaping in orange county.  Here's last weeks haul from a local park. :)

This place has a few like Elite Gold, Smooth Cayenne and Kona white. Seems reasonably priced though I have yet to buy anything from them.

We live I a world of really interesting man made materials, unless you grow in a hermetically sealed room, you will always have wind borne particles adding trace contaminants.  That given, no point worrying about the small stuff. :)

Hi Behl, my sweet tart  has gone through several flushes this summer, no tip burn by the heat, although a few leaves got blanched spots when it got over a hundred for a few days. Growing like a weed.

22
OK thanks  Barath,  I appreciate the input.  :)

23
NullZ, yeah I have a line on it, haven't asked yet but I'm hoping he can help. I got the rainbow from him, and the prior taste of Malibu.

Barath, thanks, that's very encouraging.  What type of graft works best for you? I've only ever done a few whip grafts before, though with good success on mulberry.

Looks really great DM! What variety?

I have an in ground Rainbow that has grown from a 10 inch grafted plant to over 3ft in the last year. It's been flushing like crazy the last 5 months and is still pushing out growth now.  I really want to graft Malibu #3 on it (maybe half the tree) as I got the opportunity to taste that variety and it was amazing. My question is that should I start Frankensteining this little tree at it's small size, or wait until it is more mature. And if I can, is it OK to graft White Sapote in the middle of summer?
