Tropical Fruit Discussion / Wild Califonia Gooseberries
« on: August 18, 2014, 01:58:48 PM »
This weekend I was up in Sequoia Nat'l park and found some quite large wild gooseberries.  The ripe ones were flavorful and sweet. Yum. I kick myself for discounting these in the past. Nasty spines but nothing gloves, a knife and a spoon cant overcome.

I like this fruit a lot, esp the ones I've tried at exotica. To me was like a sweet/tart lemony custard flavor.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / tamarrillo tree freaking out
« on: July 29, 2014, 01:38:40 AM »
My tamarrillo has an abnornally large crop, and the fruit has stopped growing and is turning red while still undersized. Is this a case of simply too many fruit that i should have thinned, or something else?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Willow water in bucket propogator?
« on: July 25, 2014, 12:17:30 PM »
As i understand it young willow twigs will leach both  indolebutyric acid (IBA) and salicylic acid (SA). As the bucket propigator will constantly spray the cuttings and medium over several weeks, I'm hoping it will be more effictive then a single soaking.

Would that be overkill? Wondering if anyone's tried that yet to root cuttings. I have a friend with a great tasting barbados cherry whos going to give me several cuttings to propagate.  I know it's not necissary, but... might be fun it see if they root fast. :) Anyone tried this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Converting Lawn to Planting Areas
« on: July 24, 2014, 01:51:49 PM »
Hi Jeff, i recenty converted a few hundred sf of grass to planting area. If you are cutting out the grass first you get a chance to address other issues like Ph problems or lack of nutrients prior to planting and mulching.  Muchwise I used 3 inches of gromulch topped with 3 inches of kellogs decorative bark.  So far very few weed problems. Ive tried weed blocks in the past on other project where sharp grass cuts through and establishes under the mat, making it a really pain in the ass to effectivly pull them out. Waste of money in my opinion...

Hiya Ethan! Those orange DF cutting i got from you are all very happy with new shoots growing off them! 100% rate with those. Thanks again. Still learning as i go... they are all in a communal pot, now i need to seperate them. The Luc's G is happy here too, with a few more leaves then it arrived with.

Thanks for the great plants and the advice!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My new edible hedge in Socal
« on: July 22, 2014, 08:32:25 PM »
Beauty of a hedge Xchen, I still need to add some border plants for aesthetics.  I am going to stick with drought tolerant and edible though as much as i can. Only the grumi should need xtra water once everything gets established. Im looking to maybe use cedar bay and midgen berries to fill it out. Any suggestions for other smaller edibles?

Hi Gary, yeah that is an unnamed morus nigra, fantastic mulberry with a great sweet/sour balance.  I've also added a small grafted blackbeauty into the hedge itself at the end closest to the house. I've yet to try Blackbeauty, but i'm hoping in a few years to see how it compares...

I like to graze on the way to work  ;D
This is my new hedge. I'm hoping in a couple years it'll fill out nicely. Grumi, feijoa, lingaro, goumi, goji, varigated silverberry, autumn olive, a small black beauty mulberry, and a few creeping carpet raspberries.

Hi, I have a one year old plant about 4 ft tall now that I got from Logees last year, that has been puting out dozens of flowers, but with no fruit set. I've tried hand pollinating but cant seem to find anything powdery or pollin-like on the anthers. Is there a trck to these? Does anyone have experience with fruiting this? Thanks :)

As this is a spot in full sun, I might worry about Grumichama as they have a reputation for preferring partial shade.  Does anyone know if they sunburn easily, or is this partial shade preference bunk?  I have a grumi i've been too afraid of putting in the ground as I don't have any good partial shade areas.

Hi Anthony, Ethan out in Bakersfield had Namibia Orange at one point listed on his scions page at Cloudforest, he might have some cutting...
