Tropical Fruit Discussion / achachairu - new leaves blanched

The new growth on my achachairu is very pale. Is this normal or a sign of nutrition deficiency or too much sun?

Green thumb in Lake forest carries some interesting varieties.  Last week they had chocolate and " coffee cake".

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing Ugni myricoides?
« on: September 20, 2015, 12:06:07 PM »
My dog loves the uni Myrcoides far above the normal Molinae.  In early spring, he ate all 3 plants i had of the black variety, and only 1 of the plain Chilean guava plants. After obtaining another U. Myrcoides to replace what was lost, he broke through a fence to consume that one as well. Neither he nor I can give input to the taste of the actual fruit of the black variety, but he gives the roots "2 paws up", being the part of the plant he ate.

This forum is mostly a collection of independent growers who share advice and experiences online only ( for the most part). For what it sounds like you are looking for, you should instead reach out to a regional rare fruit growing organization like California Rare Fruit Growers, etc.  Www.CRFG.org

JF, now you have me curious as well :). My seaching abilities might need brushing up. But i was having a hard time finding the benefits other then the opportunity for Nurseries to regraft if first arrempts fail. I would assume the benefit  is to provide the majority of the trunk protection from the cold as a high graft means that much more of the rootstock's protection. Is that an accurate guess?

Great topic! I'll add Wax Jambu and naranjilla to the list as being fairly easy. I had poor results with Muntingia, 1 out of 10 took. Narangia

That is really cool, I didn't even consider using the stems.. Thanks Starling! :) This is why I joined this forum.. to learn.  I'll race you EvilFruit!  ;D  So is anything recommended when trying this beyond a fresh cut, a little rooting hormone and crossed fingers?

On occasion i've seen small seeds in these seedless varieties. Might be enough to propogate if you are savy enough. Lord knows Im not at that level.

Hi Ataygirl, The is an LA Area Craiglist add for "Farm Gifts" http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/grd/5063381505.html  which is offing tropical fruit gifts including these. Might be worth inquiring if they can ship you some.

You might think of growing them while young as indoor house plants if it is cooler inside.  And if you read other posts people in hotter climates have had some luck if they can keep the roots cool with cloth pots, dampness, partial sun etc. Here's a pic of one of my molinae in a cloth pot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Planting dragon fruit close to wall
« on: June 05, 2015, 10:29:06 AM »
My suggestion is to start with a 20g or 40g pot to begin with. Once its large and established growing an a heavy T trellis, you are not going to want to try and move it. Cut a huge hole in the bottom and sink an 8 ft 4x4 right through the middle of the pot and into a pre-dug post hole in the ground, maybe 1.5 feet deep. Oh, and make the T trellis on top first. You dont want to try hammering it together after the main post is already upright. ;D

Im kind of a newbie.. but my dragon fruit seem to fruit " mostly" on the downward hanging branches. If this is going to grow up then over the wall, id imagine your neihbor will get more fruit then you in the long run.  Personally I use 4x4 post trellis near my back fence and keep in my own yard.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mamey at Smart & Final
« on: May 11, 2015, 07:55:26 PM »
It's neat coming across fruit you don't expect to find in certain stores. Today found Mamey in the local Smart & Final in Lake Forest.  For people not familiar with that store, its a big box type store. Unexpected. It might be cool to have a "fruit sighting" section on the forum.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee prices through the roof!
« on: May 11, 2015, 05:51:57 PM »
I'm seeing $3.99 a pound here in the Asain markets today.

I would guess those are imported lychees, and probably from Thailand = irradiated.

As opposed to grown in local commercial  lychee plantations?? Yeah... i'd say that's a safe bet.  ::)  :)

Maybe i just got unlucky with my first one.  Literally freeze dried the leaves and killed it overnight at 32 F, that was in the ground but also young, 4 ft.  I've been paranoid about them getting too cold ever since.  ;) Glad others have had better luck, maybe more mature trees are less effected. I wouldn't put a small one in the ground again in an area that gets regular frost.

You can get away with a blanket with the barbados cherry when it is mature. But i recommend a tent and heat for the muntingia.  That was pretty ballsy putting it into the ground there. We lost our cold winters  the last few years, but i still put mine into a greenhouse here in socal when it drops into the low 40s. I treat muntingia like an ultra tropical. One of my favorites. Great for daily treats during the summer and fall. Another option is rooting cuttings and just replace it each year when it dies from the cold. Ive heard of people doing that. They grow fast!

Anyone know a source for this variety in the US?

Took the kids to Legoland today. Edible? What is it?

Thanks, that's a relief.  I was worried it might be nutrition caused.
