Tropical Fruit Discussion / Extending the Lychee Season
« on: April 07, 2012, 06:46:02 PM »
After seeing the topic Extending the Mango Season I got to thinking about the lychee season! What are the earliest ripening variety and the latest ripening?

Thanks,

Ed

I'm still in for a roll !

The Buddy Tape is still even thinner when you stretch it. You stretch it and it bonds to itself just like the parafilm but much thinner.

Sheehan how old is your parafilm?

Ed

880
Buddy Tape is a thinner product than parafilm M. I have also had superior results using Buddy Tape veruses Parafilm. I threw away a large roll of parafilm becauseof the rate of graft fails once the parafilm M gets to old. Once it is to old you will see your # of graft failures increase because the parafilm will suffocate your scions!

Good find! When I was looking for a roll I searched all over and couldn't find a decent price without buying 8 rolls! Now it is popping up every where!

Ed

Yeah I know! I paid Peaceful Valley Nursery almost $40 for the roll I am using now. I think it is the best grafting product out there! (just my opinion) I have great results wrapping my scion and graft union with the Buddy Tape. Then it just rots off and doesn't have to be unwrapped!

I will take 1 roll. That is a good price! Most retail outlets are charging close to $40 for one roll.

Well 100% of my blooms fell off without any fruit set! But I noticed a whole new round of flower buds! So I am hopeful for the second round!

Does it hurt the fruit or plants?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Grafting Tool - Omega Cut
« on: March 29, 2012, 06:41:09 AM »
I have heard a lot of bad reviews on this tool. I think one of the issues is the scion and rootstock have to be the perfect diameter for the tool to produce the advertised cut. So if you have scions to small or to large for the tool you don't get good results. Also I think it works better with dormant scions and rootstock. I would look for some other reviews before spending money on this tool.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Finger Limes
« on: March 26, 2012, 07:43:45 AM »
Odd that Floridians have posted looking for finger limes on the various tropical fruit forums and there were no responses mentioning availability other than someone naming one website who claimed to have them only to find out they they actually didn't.
[/quote]

No its not odd. The time of year when people were looking for Finger Limes no one had them in stock. Now all the nurseries are getting fresh supplies from the wholesalers. Probably all nurseries buying them from the same wholesalers. But anyway the plants are showing up at retailers at different prices.

Thanks,

Ed

A couple North Florida Nurseries have them for $30. $75 seems pretty expensive to me also!

Thanks Adam!

This plant has been care free and survived this past winter without any protection! I hope it has a fruit that I like!

This plant is barely 2 years old! It is in a 2 gallon pot. It has several open blooms and lots of flower buds. Even if I don't like the fruit once I get to try it looks like it would be a pretty plant to just grow!

Tomas,

The really good ones have a nice tropical , banana and just fruitty custard flavor. The bad ones you will not be able to spit out of your mouth fast enough! The seeds I have are from open pollinated selected varieties. So they should produce a pretty good fruit. It will not be identical to seed parent. But these seeds are from Neal Petersons patent pawpaws.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ground Coffee, not coffee grounds
« on: March 06, 2012, 10:03:03 PM »
I think the article was about using pure coffee grounds as potting soil. The test plants were tomatoes. Coffee grounds seem great as mulch but I would not use as potting soil myself.

Oscar all the photos are of the same plant. I moved the plant onto my back porch trying to get a better photo. I was able to try these fruit over at a friends house. The fruit on the tree was green, brown and pink all on the same tree at different stages of maturity. I preferred the ones that were pink. I would love to have a seedless one. They seem very easy to graft!

Thanks,

Ed
