Tamarillos are one of the better solanums, though nothing from  that group would I request for a last supper. Very commonly grown in Australia. I ripped one out a few years ago to make room for a peach. I can probably get you some  tomarillo seeds if you like, huertasabanas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Smoking seeds , how is this done ?
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:33:04 PM »

Luc you don't need to be thinking about actual smoke when thinking of smoke treatment. All you need to do is buy smoked vermiculite and use this as you would normal vermiculite, though as Mike points out it depends on the species--those that do require smoke treatment never come from rainforest settings. Sometimes it is about fire and others it is about some chemical exchange between the seed and smoke. Purple apple berry will not germinate without smoke treatment. This is an unusual species which comes from Tasmania and is not representative of native Australian edibles. I can't even think of another example which does. Perhaps some wattles which have edible seeds might be like this, I'm not sure.

Sounds about the right level of prerequisite adulteration required to make them taste something remotely like chocolate pudding  :P

I should really stop with the BS bashing. I think  I need to try better varieties. Did you happen to pick up the chocolate Daleys were selling a couple of weeks back?

I may have some pingo de mel cuttings soon BMC, I will only have two but can spare you one in the event they eventuate, if you like.

Bruce the Indian variety is illegal to propagate in Aus, and the ebay seller you mention carries the outer layer of the nut, most the seed. This is what produces the lather, not the seed itself. I believe they might originate from India, not sure.

Alphitonia e. Is the Australian soap tree. Rubbing the leaves produces the lather in this species. Traditional Aboriginal people did indeed use to drown fish in water.

Luc I have procured you 25 of these seeds. Will post when they arrive.

I'm more than willing to mail outside of Australia, when I can. A lot of what is requested in terms of, in particular, Australian natives, is just simply hard to get a hold of for reasons which are mostly geographical. This is something which is exacerbated by a fairly low interest in  native fruit cultivation  across Australia (with the exclusion of syzygiums, I should add) as well as quarantine system which emulates the Third Reich. There is a also, sadly, a lot of 'secret squirreling' which features as a cultural phenomenon and this further encumbers Australian based seed/plant swapping.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Longan Growing Experiments
« on: December 10, 2013, 01:12:54 AM »
I've never tried growing Longan from seed. I have  a few small trees growing (Kohala). Would like to get a chompoo which I hear is a goof variety with large fruit.

I fertilise mine with pure cow manure (uncomposted. I layer it over a deep layer of mulch...they are planted out on fairly high mounds). I've found they are very sensitive to over fertilisation, and it is best to avoid products like dynamic lifter, otherwise you end up with wonky/malformed foliage. A lot tougher than Lychees, but then again, I'm a guy who killed a B3.

I don't have any personally, but I might be able to track some down. I'll see what I can come up with. I know there are a few varieties of this, one is an Australian native I believe, but that will be very difficult to get a hold of (for me at least).

Yeah, it's pretty good gear too. Very commonly sold at markets, in fact as jam/ jelly is the only way I have eaten rosellas, never tried a fresh one.

No, not yet. But I will say that they are well and away faster than any other types I have. I got mine as bare rooted plants, probably about 30cm or so long and they have doubled that size in around two months. They do get a lot of TLC though, that said, and pretty much want for nothing. They are a lot lighter than the reds or purples. I am actually really worried that my mature purple vines will be too heavy for my trellises, and they'll topple over.

I have a little collection of about eight varieties, but I really want more purples and orange skinned types, the latter of which I have none. I have prepared better trellises in advance though, which are hardwood trunks.

Hey Vic

I have a couple of yellows too. They seem to be the most vigorous, followed behind by the purples, and behind that the reds. I'm a bit wary of buying some seeds from ebay, not because I don't think they are legit but because generally my own woeful germination rate lol. I do still buy seeds, but mainly for purposes of swapping and trading. I'll mostly forward them on to people who know what they are doing, and hope that one day a cutting or something barerooted comes back my way.

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy pitaya/megalanthus varieties. Looking for cosmic charlie and any orange skinned types. I am also looking for alphonso mango seeds, or seedlings small enough to fit in a small shipping  tube. Please PM me if interested.

I can pay by either paypal or bank deposit.
