Rob, can you share a little more on challenges of growing the giant yellow? I am grafting seedings onto other DF vines and would love to hear more about it.

Rannman, is there a more common name of G2? Not sure if it’s available in the states.

Thanks.

G-2 is the only name I know it by, sorry. Don’t even remember where I purchased the cutting unfortunately.

Well said, Rob.
I’ve often wondered why people who are ‘really keen’ to get into growing dragonfruit, don’t take the time to browse through the 100+ pages of info on this particular thread!
I can honestly say that I’ve read every post on this thread and some posts, two or three times! Any question I’ve had is usually answered 10 fold if you take the time to sit down and read what’s on offer.
Having said that, growing half a dozen varieties is a whole lot more satisfying than focusing on 1 particular variety! I’ve waited all season for my megalanthus to flower(and it has just put out six buds heading into winter), and while waiting, I’ve collected probably 200kg of other varieties over the past 5 months!
More is better in growing dragonfruit!

On a different note, the variety G-2, has been the top pick with everyone who has sampled the varieties I’ve picked this season. Truly a top selection for anyone starting out!

I’ve got some Caper seeds if you are interested. They are a couple of years old but they will be viable.

Just out of curiosity, is the correct name spelling Halley’s Comet or Haille’s Comet?

Electric fence maybe? Not overly expensive and easy to set up. I don’t have a lot of experience with deer but it’s good on nearly everything 🤔🤔🤔

Well, here it is, in all it’s prickly glory! Very nice colour, with a firm flesh that is noticeably different in texture to most Dragonfruit I have eaten. Flavour is quite nice but not what I would call great. It has a flavour similar to rose water 🤔🤔, which could appeal to people. The only real downside is the spine. They don’t brush off like megalanthus varieties so it’s ‘Handle with care’.
Overall, a nice tasting piece of fruit with little commercial value due to the spines. Good collectors specimen, having nice flowers as well.

Ethan, the time has arrived. This was just starting to split but not enough to see the flesh colour. It’s in the fridge chilling out for a bit before I slice into it a bit later. Hope it’s as tasty as it is spikey! More pics later.
Happy New Year from Oz, 🎉🍻🎉🍺🍻🎉🎉🥂🍻🍺🎉🍻🥂🍻🎉🎉🍻🥂

Here’s a few I picked today. They’re growing a bit quick and starting to split. All good solid fruit for cuttings in their second year!

I’m not sure if this is legit, but it’s an interesting concept. Seedlings grafted onto mature stems.

« on: December 14, 2017, 06:55:24 AM »
I started them in Plastic Cups. hahahaha, some I moved on to bigger Plastic Bottles :)
I plan to move the hardiest one to a 10 Gallon Planter....
These are all indoors
I have some outside too btw, Most dead, or not fairing very well at all. Something like a bird or maybe a squirrel is eating the leaves. hahahahaha
They can not handle the Summer Heat (couple days over 115, summer avg 96) nor the Winter Cold(avg night in 40-50, but we get some at 30)... The hopes is that once I have a bigger one I can try outside. Am also hoping I can grow one to 3-5 feet in the house., I been using the Sink water (thus treated via softener), my water in Garden by passes Softener. Should I try that water? Won't the hard water be just as bad?
Where the hell do I get "reverse osmosis water"? lol
What about Bottle Water? Will look for some cheap bottle water:(

Do I seem lost? I AM!!!!

Thanks
LT

Just out of curiosity, does anyone in California have rainwater? I’ve noticed a lot of growers on this forum that have trouble with their water for some reason. I understand that you have low rainfall, but a rainwater tank full of water can go a long way?

Not sure who you are asking, but yes, I am sure about the temps. I’ve got a thermometer👍

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bees pollinating dragonfruit
« on: December 12, 2017, 03:46:00 AM »
Has anyone noticed their Dragonfruit flowers opening slightly in the early afternoon, just enough to allow access for bees? This has been happening here for the last couple of days and by the time I go out to collect pollen when the flower is fully open, there is no pollen left!
The bees have to crawl through the opening and across the stamen, so hopefully they have paid a visit to different varieties, in order to cross pollinate.
I couldn’t upload a video but it’s on my instagram for those who are interested, #lockyervalleydragonfruit.

White fleshed varieties seem to be the toughest and will generally tolerate the cold better than pink fleshed types. Pinks handle it better than reds which are on a par with megalanthus types.
In saying that, I have a couple of reds that aren’t bothered by the cold here as opposed to my Columbian Supreme which gets bashed every year, especially if it is windy and cold.
We get down to-3 here every year but not for long periods of time. Couple of hours max.

Most Dragonfruit cuttings will fruit within 2 years with good care. Some won’t but a lot will.
I find it difficult to trust a site that doesn’t even take the time to put up their own pics of the varieties that they say they grow. Most pics from the top tropical site are from other websites as far as I can see, and you don’t have to look too closely to see that a couple of completely different varieties have identical fruit! The Sweet Red and the American Beauty are identical on the site! American Beauty looks nothing like this! I would assume Sweet Red doesn’t either.
If you want good cuttings that will give the fruit that they are supposed to give, only buy from reputable sellers. Matt’s Landscape is brilliant.

There's Asunta 1 through 4. The fruit size improves with each generation. The taste is said to vary though. Non of them are bad, but some people seem to prefer the earlier ones.
Thanks
Looked online and just thought so but seen it say Asunta 24
https://www.bonanza.com/listings/EXTRA-RARE-Dragon-Fruit-Pitaya-Pithaya-Asunta-24-Hylocereus-Hybrid-SEEDS-/451318474?goog_pla=1&gpid=18283950120&keyword=&goog_pla=1&pos=1o1&ad_type=pla&gclid=Cj0KCQiAmITRBRCSARIsAEOZmr6L5EK_444hX2EHp-Npl7uHntrsAt4go_szYPw91MHf80G09wKyKBIaAn5aEALw_wcB

If that fruit is real, and I have my doubts, you should look for a cutting of it.
I was just trying to check as much information on the Asunta Family and learn what type i think i would like to add, heard the Asunta 2 taste lil bit like cinnamon, which i think i will get, but wanted to get info since the place i found wont have until April/May to get shipped out

I can understand that. Buying Dragonfruit seeds from the internet is always a risky thing to do. You have to wait at least 3-4 years to verify the fruit, if they grow well, and after that time ,  the seller of the original seeds have possibly vanished. It cost me a lot of time and money to get all of the varieties I have but I went through reputable growers and I’m very happy. I’ve never purchased seeds to grow Dragonfruit.

Any new updates on this thread?

I eventually got my hands on all of these varieties. Asunta is just starting to flower now so I cannot say what it is like but Frankie’s Red is a great piece of fruit. Frankie’s doesn’t really do too well due the cold, frosty winter and the very hot summers, but always puts out a few fruit to keep me happy. Namibian orange was a bit of a disappointment after all the time I put into finding it. It turned out to be a pink fleshed variety☹️, but it tasted great😁! The only orange colour was on the very young flower buds, but that could have been because I wanted it to have something orange.  If it is indeed Nam. Orange, I’m not sure how it got the Nam. Orange name!

Great job Rannman, can't wait to see the finished fruit! The only info I can offer beyond Ricshaw is I believe my original cuttings came from Don's Epiphyllum World.
Hi Ethan. This is the second time it has flowered. Once last year and once so far this year. I am very keen to see what the fruit are like. Has yours never fruited? It’s not a fast grower and doesn’t put out a lot of growth at all. Stems are 4 sided and mostly red in colour.

I’m a bit confused by the coniflorus side of things as well. Most info I find refers to selenicereus grandiflorus which has similar growth to my plant. Looking forward to seeing the fruit ripen so I can check flesh colour and flavour.

I received a cutting of this from Ethan Moses a few years back and I was wondering if anyone else, or Ethan, has any information on this variety. Mine is fruiting for the first time this year and would like to compare pics/info. All I know at the moment is that it’s a prickly little sucker. Will add a pic of young fruit tomorrow.

Miracle,
I love your your trellis layout! So effector, yet economical! :) I just made one myself.

I'm going to add some supplemental lighting and heat. Prehaps a reptile heat lamp? I haven't been able to get df to flower or even grow much inside the greenhouse. I suspect it doesn't like filtered sunlight, since my greenhouse has glass that reduces uv. It grows nicely outside in direct sunlight and hot weather. I want to grow it successfully this time. I'm so sick of nasty store-bought df. I am growing "Red Zamorano" and "Purple Haze". Fingers crossed!
Thanks for posting!

Thanks, sildanani
Your trellis is very nice too.  Good luck with your df
FYI my white df will flowers two crops per year, one in June and one in late August. Red df will flowers three crops: late March,  June and late August.

Wow, it's a miracle alright.  How do you get DF to fruit so many time per year?

thanks!

Kent

I think you will find that most dragonfruit will flower 2-3 times a year throughout the warmer months. Sometimes  less, sometimes more.

On a different note, I have a few similar varieties fruiting at the moment so I may be able to post some pics of ripe fruit for comparison. Pink Panther, Voodoo Child and Sugar Dragon (U.S varieties), as well as Aztec Gem (Aussie variety). All have similar plant growth and young, unripe fruit are also very similar. Pink Panther and Aztec Gem have small spines on the fruit.

I don’t remember if this question has been asked before but is voodoo child the same as S8 sugar dragon. On spicyexotics site he claims that research shows that they are both the same.
I think I read somewhere that they aren’t but can’t recall where I read it from.
I never heard of Houghton where can I get cuttings from that variety?
The small red one is a cross I made with Houghton and Yellow Colombian, it is the one that has a strawberry melon taste.

Any chance you can cut the fruit and post a pic of the flesh colour?
