Hi

I’m new at DF and would love to have a few to start growing.  I’ve done a bit of research and would like a DF with the highest possible brix value (> 19).  Looking for either a yellow, red or orange. I prefer large/XL fruit... anywhere around 1 to 3 lbs.   cuttings or seeds (prefer cuttings).  I am located in Montreal, Quebec. Canada.

If you don’t have any...maybe you could recommend where I can get some.. thx!

If you have done a bit of research you will know that you won’t get a yellow or orange(skin colour, I’m assuming), that will be 1-3lbs. Reds(skin colour again), come in a few different colours, Red, Pink, purple and white. Even white with pink marbling, as in Delight.
Matt’s Landscape will have everything you need and more. For larger fruit you will want something like a Purple Haze, Delight, Physical Graffiti. All really good fruit!

Have you thought about Lilly pilly’s? Pretty quick growing, easy from seed and edible fruits. That’s what I’m using to block out my neighbours.

Thanks Rannman for the picture! Color wise it does look similar in that perspective. And yours look like it could’ve weighed in at 2lbs too!
They do look very similar, and yes, it was the biggest dragonfruit I’ve seen. Really impressive, and very tasty as well!

Can one identify a variety by looking at the fruit? Mainly between hybrids. Reason being I’m about to harvest my first fruit from my supposedly Purple Haze plant and I’ve been looking at pictures of the fruit online and I see people posting different variations of the fruit while claiming it’s purple haze. Being sent the wrong cutting before I’m a bit nervous that I was sent the wrong plant again. Here are some pictures of the fruit so far. It’s not fully ripe yet but getting there.

Hi Sandy. My Purple Haze on the left.

Nice! Been a great start here after 5 months of incredibly dry weather, with plenty of flowers and good fruit set. Shaping up to be a great season!

Has anyone out there got any pics of ‘Pink Panther’ flowers and/or fruit, cut and whole? I’ve waited 4 years for mine to flower and there doesn’t seem to be much out there in relation to pics for this variety. Thanks, Anthony.

Which types of White and Red dragonfruit varieties produce the largest fruit sizes? Im. wondering  :blank:

The Purple Haze, on the left in this pic weighed in at 1.2kg. It was truly huge! While this isn't the norm, this variety does put out a larger than average fruit if cross pollinated. Fantastic flavour as well!

I have a 6 year old LaVerne Red taking me 3 years to find the right pollinator.  S8 is the right key.
[/quote]

You will find that the right pollinator is the one that is different from the one you are growing. Pollinating Dragonfruit is not a complicated thing. S-8 is possibly a good pollinator but mine has never flowered and I use other varieties pollen to get plenty of fruit every year.
If it's taken 3 years of flowering to find the right pollinator, chances are you were doing something wrong.

You should be able to lift that tree, straighten it up and save it. I've seen much worse than this in SEQld, Australia, where very large avocado trees were laid over on their side after excessive rain and wind. The trees were never touched and left where they were due to their size. They continued to thrive and produce! I'll get a few pics next time I'm out that way. Really impressive to see flourishing avocados with half of their root system sticking up out of the ground. They are obviously tough!

Guys, how come everyone dragon fruits look big and mine looks super small? What in the world is this variety? It's just one inch big??? I have 6 fruits and they are all riped, but super duper small cheese..

Do you know what variety this is, as that could explain the size. Not all dragonfruit are created equal in size or flavour. Did you cross pollinate to get these fruit?

Does it take 30 days from bud to bloom and then another 30-35 days from bloom to ripened fruit ?
Approximately 14 days from bud to bloom, and then 30-35 days to fruit picking! A few varieties take longer to ripen but only a few.

The orange dragonfruit picture is actually of 'Frankies Red' and unless I can see the 'purple flower' in person, I would call bullsh#t! The blue one is for people who shop on eBay!
You'll also notice that the seller has a variety of Nopale's Cactus with the name 'Cosmic Blue' , with bright pink and yellow blooms! Incredible imagination!

Has not been self fertile for me. Whether that is just where i live or not, I don't know, but even with plenty of native bees as well as European bees, I still make sure I x-pollinate otherwise I'm left with fallen flowers!
ALWAYS best to x-polllinate if you have the chance. Almost always guarantees fruit and the fruit is almost guaranteed to be bigger!
On a different note, I have had flower buds that looked like that, that have returned to vegetative growth. Also had buds return to vegetative growth, and then flower anyway, like this Purple Haze.

If they are soft enough, they are ripe and the seed should be ready for planting. Choose the one that is in the best condition. A photo of them would also help.
I would give a try growing from seed, since this costs nothing, even if you have to wait some years before seeing some fruit.
Do you know if they are poly, or mono?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Honey Mango - Pakistan
« on: June 27, 2017, 04:15:29 AM »
I saw a couple of trays of 'Honey' mangoes from Pakistan in one of our local fruit shops @$4 each. They were fully yellow, shaped a bit like a NDM, with wrinkly, shrivelled skin. Are they worth buying, worth growing from seed? I also read that it could be 'Ataulfo'???? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

The fruit that forms is still an S8 but any plant produced from the seed of that particular fruit is going to be different from the parent, a hybrid . It will be a totally new variety! It may look, taste and seem exactly the same as its parent or it could be something completely different, but it is definitely not the same. This is how newer, sometimes better varieties are created!
If you grow a plant from the seeds of that fruit, you can name it after yourself as it's a totally new variety.
Hope this helps.

This guy never replied to any comment or PM... :-\
I think you might be confused! I've dealt with Rodney and he's never let me down. All 👍👍👍👍👍👍!

Cross pollination is the answer. Even if you have a supposedly ' Self pollinating' variety, get pollen from a plant that you a certain is different, and pollinate your flowers.
Most self pollinating types aren't self pollinating! Vietnamese White and Columbian Supreme are the only two self pollinating varieties I have out of over 57 varieties. Even Frankies and Yellow Meg don't set every time!

As far as I know, Gray gave this variety to a friend with the understanding that it wouldn't be distributed any further. But we all know how those agreements usually end up!

No, this is definitely a megalanthus cross. According to Matts Landscape the megalanthus is crossed with an unknown pollinator. So is a gamble really!
I've been waiting for Matts to update their listing of this variety, but nothing's changed for at least 2 years. They have pics of flowers but no pics of any fruit. Maybe the fruit wasn't worth photographing! Hope not!
I've had this cutting planted for a long time and this summer just gone, it tried to flower more than a dozen times. The cutting is only 8" long and couldn't support any sort of flowers, but it kept trying!
Now that it has finally put out some vegetative growth, I can maybe see what it has to offer next summer.

Just wondering if any growers/collectors out there have grown the Dragonfruit variety 'Yellow cross 68' , from Matts Landscape? As far as I know it's a megalanthus hybrid, but Matt hasn't updated the details of this variety for quite some time and I was hoping someone out there has had some extra info on it, in particular fruit colour inside and out.
I've had my cuttings for 3 years and they've just started to show signs of growth now! Pays to be patient apparently.
Thanks in advance.

The 3 most likely candidates are Kathy van Arum, Connie Mayer or Bruni. All three of these varieties have flowers just like that. Hope this helps.

Not sure how many of you are on instagram, but you might be interested to see a video of someone roasting a whole Durian over a gas burner! I've never tried durian so I'm not sure what roasting it would achieve. Check out chasing_delicious on instagram.
I know the name sounds a bit weird, but it's all tropical fruits etc.
