Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coming to S. Florida July 13th to 15th
« on: June 24, 2012, 06:47:44 PM »
I will be in the Fort Laurderdale area from Friday July 13th to Sunday July 15th. Of course first stop with be King Harry (his garden tours are worth every penny of their admission price!) and I will be hitting the mango fesitval first thing Saturday morning for 2-3 hours.
Otherwise, my schedule is pretty open. I'm hoping some of the kind members of this forum in the south florida area might be willing to show me around their gardens. any offers!??

Tropical Fruit Discussion / NY indoor grown sweetheart lychees. Pics
« on: June 23, 2012, 10:08:43 PM »
I ended up getting about 8 huge lychees from my tree. Another 20 or so fell vicitm to a scale infestation.
The fruit tasted very similar to hak ip. not as good as mauritius but not bad at all for NY grown!

sooooooooooooo drumroll...............................
verdict? unfortunately, only meh!
i cut through that mango like butter - what a great feeling!
I may have waited a day too long to open it. there was a tiny tiny  bit of internal break down. generally, it was very good texture and very sweet but after smelling the intense and complex spicy and citrusy notes in the uncut mango for the last 3 days, I was a little disappointed to taste just plain sweet. kinda tasted a little  like madame frances mango.  well i'm sure future mangoes will be considerably better as the tree matures. my tree is going through a very small second bloom cycle right now, so hopefully one more mango will set.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cherry harvest pics
« on: May 31, 2012, 09:05:02 AM »
picked about 30% of the cherries from one of my multi graft cherries trees today (no bing unfortunately). they look beautiful but taste wise, di only gived them a 5 or 6 out of 10. hopefully as the tree matures the flavor will improve and we did have a ton of rain over the last month which probably didnt help. these cherries are about on par with the average cherries in the store and not as good as the most expensive store cherries.

30
i posted some pics of a mystery seedling a few months back and people thought it was a passion fruit. how bout now that the seedling is bigger. do people still think this is passion fruit?

31
as is my custom, I screwed myself over. I tried to move my mango tree on a dolly, out of the garage so I could water it, and even though I was holding on to the mango fruit as I moved the tree, the mango still dropped into my hand. The mango had just turned color from green to yellow about two days prior but it is still hard. some sap flowed for a couple of seconds when the mango dropped- i dont think it was clear but im not sure.

here are some pics next to an average sized over ripe atulf mango. is the mango sufficiently developed that it will ripen and soften off the tree? will the flavor be lesser because the mango didnt ripen on the tree?  Harry, is this mango a little on the small size for a Chanok?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / today's lychee refill
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:27:31 AM »
so sunday's 18 pounds of mauritius lasted until monday! (although I did give around 5-6 pounds to a friend)
so had to get another 36 pounds today ($80).
unfortunately, the brewsters shown in the bottom draw will get badly neglected now that mauritius are in full swing.

this may last us through memorial day but probably not

33
we'll start with my pride and joy- my sweetheart lychee tree. one of the fruit has reached full size and is just starting to color up.

\

next my Maha Chanok- dont think the fruit has grown much bigger in the last few weeks-

my PSM mango, finally about to bust out a new growth spurt after about a year of doing zilch (its the recipient of my lychee peels and stones

two lychee airlayers from harry- variety unknown but possibly garnet and kaimana - at the beginning of nice growth spurts

business is so good, i'm expanding!
kidding- because i pack so many trees into my tiny yard, i get very little sun on my patio so i have put 3 of my containered tropicals on the side of the street.

golden transparent plum

kilomoka kiwi

fantasia nectarine ( the squirrels get most of these every year

delicious black raspberry

delicious red gooseberry

fig airlayer

golden muscat grape- really tasty but a little seedy

cherries now netted

nectacrest nectraine

mirabelle plums grafted onto golden transparent plum

cox apples under nylon footies

pommegranates

see that telephone or electrical wire running across the back of my yard- thats like the US1 for the local squirrel population. they scamper across it many times a day (though thinking about it now, the wire must have a 1 way sign on it because i think they only run across it from left to right). anyway, they use that wire to get onto my garage roof from where thy help theselves to my nectarines while flipping me the birdie if I ever throw stones at them. so now I have nailed large strips of cardboard to the roof of my gargage and slathered generous amount of tanglefoot all over it. in addition, i slathered tanglefoot across "their" wire, plus over various branches of my trees, having first laid down some foil. see pics. a couple of hours after completing this, i opened my back door to snack on some lychees in my garden and i suddenly hear this commotion at the back of my yard that sounds like a squirrel falling- then i suddenly see a squirrel launch itself several feet in the air in my direction- i manage to close my back door in time and then see that the squirrel has gotten one of my foil papers with tanglefoot stuck to it. after a few more seconds of incredibly violent thrashing around, it managed to free itself of the foil. hopefully, that dquirrel will not be back. I am very much looking fwd to more squirrrel schenanigans- though i have to say, when that squirrel launched itself in my direction while howling a blood curdling noise, that was some pretty scary ****

Tropical Fruit Discussion / this is why they call me lycheeluva!!!
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:57:12 PM »
thats 18 pounds of mauritius on the left and 10 pounds of brewster on the right and if you look closely, you can see the outline of a few more pounds of lychees hidden away in the bottom draw. these will only last us 2-3 days.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / lycheeeeeeeeeeeeeeees have hit town
« on: May 16, 2012, 09:41:00 AM »
finally, my 10 month wait is over and lychees are available once again. today is the first day they have hit the market this year. unusually, it is the brewster variety that has hit town first. usually mauritius comes first. These are from mexico and are marketed under the brand name STA stella. checking out their website, I see they only grow brewster.  hopefully, mexican mauritius will hit town soon.
man these are good. not quite mauritius good bust still damn damn good. right now they are selling for $6 a pound but the price will come down to around $4 a pound pretty soon.

37
by all accounts, there are not many lychees to be found in florida this year. How's the longon season shaping up? any better?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / new mango and lyche pictorial update
« on: April 28, 2012, 08:38:56 AM »
my Maha Chanok had set several bloom spikes but all the mangoes eventually turned yellow and dropped off besides for one which is now about 2/3 sized up.
after moving the tree directly under my most powerful light hoever, it has sent out about 10 new growth spurts, including at least one bloom pannicle at the site of a prior bloom pannicle which failed to set any fruit. it sure seems to like this light. during flowering phase, i will leave open my garage door a crack- hopefully enough for flies to get in to pollinate the flowers but not enough for the squirrels to get in and steal my ripening lychees and solitary mango

as for the sweetheart lychees, theyare continuing to grow bigger- a couple are close to full size but no coloration yet. I have noticed the damn scale even attach themselves to the developing lychee fruit.

« on: April 15, 2012, 12:37:07 AM »
i bought this jaboticaba 4 years ago as a 7 gallon. Its been in this pot ever since. should i take it out of the put and prune the roots? does the foliage need pruning?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / how to get rid of scale honeydew on leaves
« on: April 14, 2012, 08:18:45 AM »
one of my tangerine trees and a small mango tree has a ton of scale honeydew on the leaves.
I dont tink hosing them with water is going to cut it- any other ideas how I can remove the honeydew and the scale

43
again, apologies for posting non-tropicals but this tree is so frikken beautiful when in bloom i wanted to share.

its a Golden Transparent Plum. This tree has been in the ground about 5 years.  i got about 10-15 plums last year but should get a bumper crop this year. its so beautiful in bloom. its a dave wilson tree. dave wilson is in CA and is kinda the Zills or Pine Island of temperate fruits. their trees are top quality and very precocious. the few plums i got last year were really delicious.
this first pic was taken at night.

this pic is from my upsatirs bedroom window

ive started making weekly pilgrimages to NYC china town and after being pleasantly surprised by longon and rambutan a couple of weeks ago, i was even more pleasantly surprised to find jakfruit and mangosteen today. the jak are from mexico and the mangosteen are probably from thailand. due to budget constraints I only bight one bag of mangosteen at $9 a bag which came to about $20 and I also bought 7 pounds of jakfruit at $4 a pound. taste results- they both taste excellent, although the mangosteen are probably the first pick of the season as they are a little on the small side, but really amazing tasting.
here are some pics.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / jaboticaba question
« on: March 22, 2012, 08:23:34 AM »
so ive posted before how my jaboticaba fruits (very sparsely) from the tips, rather than from the trunk and limbs as it supposed to.
Robert who also grows a JAb indoors experienced the same thing, though after a few years, his has now started fruiting from the trunk. i just saw a sinle solitary bloom growing on my trunk and I'm now thinking that perhaps Jabs fruit from their tips, sparsely during their juvenile years, and then progress to fruiting from the trunk. when I first experienced the tip fruiting, i sent a few emails to some jab growers and posted a message on the yahoo forum but no one had ever heard of a tip fruiting jab. if my theory that it is a juvenile phenmonon is correct, perhaps no one knew about it because it fruits so sparsely (a couple f fruit per year) from the tips.
an alternative theory is that there is something about a jab being grown indoors that makes it fruit from the tips during its first few years
any thoughts peeps?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / picsof my temperate fruits
« on: March 19, 2012, 11:54:06 PM »
i hope im forgiven for posting these pics of non tropical fruit trees  but this is the only opportunity i have for posting pics of trees in the ground

Italian plum blossoms-this was grafted 3 years ago onto a greengage tree-

orangered apricot grafted just last year- the graft took off like a rocket because i completely pugged a disease ridden peach tree- so all the energy of the established tree went into the apricot and a couple of other grafts.

grape vine (golden muscat (needs pruning) up against my back wall)

petit negron fig

fantasia nectarine tree but the entire left limb is a red haven peach graft from about 3 years ago, and the peach graft itself has a new peach grafted onto it (where the green tape is)

fantasia nectarine tree almost in full bloom. the limbs resting on the garage roof are slightly ahead in full bloom due to the heat emanating from my greenhouse garage

kolomikta hardi kiwi growing up an obsolisk- really pretty foliage and flowers and great fruit

black raspberry- small berries but very tasty- better than any red ive grown

limb of  nectacrest nectarine showing an apricot and plum graft

nectacrest nectarine about to burst into full bloom- i had to completely remove all the foliage and fruit last year as the tree was absolutely infested with aphids

multigraft cherry tree (i have 2 of these)

close up of cherry blosoms about to open

golden russet apple tree with about 15 grafted varieties on it

golden transparent plum with about 10 varieties grafted onto it

golden transparent plum about to burst into bloom

so forgive me for posting evey couple of weeks but im obsessed.

some new growth on mauritius lychee- doesnt look great- looks like its going to come out shrivelled. maybe thirsty or may be residual injury from some phyto phos spray i sprayed about 6 weeks ago? any thoughts anyone?

some pics of my Maha Chanok mango- Harry- about what percentage of its full size has it reached?

three small mahas developing- hopefully at least one will make it

new growth that sprouted out about 2-3 weeks ago after I cut off some spent pannicles. incredibly, it already lookslike its about to push out its own new growth?

new growth after i cut off a spent pannicle 2-3 weeks ago

pics of developing sweetheart lychees- there are about 50-60 in total

Tropical Fruit Discussion / today's chinatown haul (pic)
« on: March 19, 2012, 01:53:47 PM »
went to check out china town (in nyc) today- its still way off peak season for tropicals which is June and July but I was pleasantly surprised to find some decent fruit.
they had rambutans for $6 a pound. less red than many of the common varieties- had a lot or yellow/orange in the peel. one novice pair of shoppers (seen in the pic below) asked these exact qs about the rambutan....

"is that a fruit"- (the fact that it was situated among several different fruits was not enough of a clue for these wise shoppers.)
"can I touch them" (pic shows her doing just that)
"are those spikes- do you eat the spikes?"
(pointing to a rambutan that had the skin peeled back to reveal the flesh for display purposes) "is that what it looks like inside"

when the saleslady said it tastes like a lychee, the inevitable response was "what's a lychee"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I despair.

anyway, the rambutan was a little juicer than usual, really clingy and had somewhat of a sacarin after taste. wouldnt eat too many of these. I would guess these were imported from mexico but thats just a wild guess.

there were longons for $4 a pound.  were pretty decent. had a bit of a smoked fish taste to them! i know that sounds very weird.

the ever present large green crunchy guavas and tasteless dragon fruit.
champagne mangoes of various sizes- i bought half a dozen but havent tried them yet.

here's a pic of some of the produce

so i just spent an hour squashing scale on my producing sweetheart lychee tree. i must have removed about 75 scale. this is not the stick shaped scale i posted of yesterday- this is the tan oval shaped scale that attaches itself to the branches and twigs of the tree, especially in or near the cervices of branches.  its insane how well coumaflaged they are. they are the exact color of the branches and they curve exactly with the branch. only by very carefully looking at the twig, can you see a slight extra layer indicating a scale. i spent an hour going over the tree and each time i fingered through the branches id find another few id missed the first 20-30 checks. im sure i didnt get them all, though i must surely have gotten at least 75%. this my fruiting sweetheart tree and given how sensitive lychee trees are to chemicals, im thinking to not spray the tree with horticultural oil in case it damages or weakens the tree and causes it to drop the fruit.

so im thinking dont spray till the fruit are harvested and then revisit the issue if the tree still has scale. your thoughts everyone?
