not for a NY driver!

54
actually, im now wondering if the tommy is a tommy as it actually tastes pretty good if a bit fibery
i tried one of the mystery mangoes yesterday and it was still a couple of days shy of full ripeness. wasnt very good. maybe a fully ripe one will be better

Thanks for all the kind words- Harry, if I have to fly to florida myself to bring you a bushel, I will do so. Jay, dont despair. some of my grafts flowered when barely 3-4 inches long and some took 8 feet of growth to flower. and even when they flower, they often wont set fruit for the first 1-2 blooms.

I have several self-grafted fruit cocktail trees that have flowered and that  I hope to post pics of this year. some contain a variety of plums, some contain apricot, plum and peach, and some contain nectarine, plum and peach. ill post pics in June- should make for some cool pics.

56
googled oro mango and did not find any results

harry:
all the varieties that produced blooms this year, are currently in various stages of open flower. there are maybe about 10 different varieties currently flowering, with maybe another 5 varieties that did not bloom this year because the graft is too young/small.
The main tree is a golden russets which ripens in october- so about 5 months fruit to flower. Some of the grafted varieties ripen in August and September. I wish I could capture the smell of the blooms in a bottle. Each bloom variety  is slightly different in size, color, and smell. Definitely my favorite tree with regard to beauty of bloom.
Golden russet is a great great apple. Harry, please remind me to mail you some in October.

58
sorry for going off- topic but its rare that I get to show off an in-ground tree.
this is a golden russet apple tree with about 15 other grafts on it. the tree is in full bloom (probably most blooms ever) and many of the grafts have bloomed profusely for the first time so I should get a decent variety from this tree. its incredible to see the various different shades of pink and red, the different apples varieties bloom in.

i would stay well away from robert is here- tourist trap selling mediocre fruit at super inflated prices. i think pine island is in homestead and they  usually have mangoes for sale. but the best place to buy mangoes is the zill mango stand. dont think they are in homestead but are sertainly within a 30-60 min drive from there, if not closer. def worth making a stop. unbelievable numbers of rare and delicious mango varieties.

61
Karen- I like prickly pears but I dont think I will buy them anymore. even though they have most of the spine removed, there are always a few little ones left, and I always spend the next 5 days with tiny spines stuck in my hands and tongue. they dont taste good enough to be worth the hassle

62
do they ship?

looks like the standard mexican import- sometimes kents sometimes tommys. in the summer they are edible and will taste of coconut in a very boring way.

64
unfortunately, they were not ripe so i couldnt sample. havent found any other wild fruit growing. at breakfast in the hotel, they serve some very nice small yellow guava every day, as well as some awful papaya that taste of smoked feet. some of the days they have decent atulfo mango and other days they have had awful tommys.

the yellow/green ones are definitely Madame Frances. That is a mango that is sold throughout the summer in NY so I can spot them a mile off. Like you said, decent but not great mango

66
i like them equally on the tart side then dead ripe. the minute i get back to NY, am headed straight to asian distributor to see if they have any in stock

67
damn straight its incomprehensible

68
cbc- brewster is a later lychee and a great one to add to your collection. sweet cliff is also later and a great lychee.

69
thanks for the suggestions

70
another solution is that they continue to publish the list but make it clear at the top of the list that members will get access to the list before it goes on general sale and some or most of the rarer items on the list will likely not be available.

71
I'm in Puerto Morelos (between Cancun and Playa Del Carmen)  on a weekend break till Tuesday. Anyone know of any good places to get fruit from Cancun or Playa Del Carmen?

72
so were the lychees ready?

73
John - you are not wrong.

74
I can differentiate between a brewster and mauritius by looking at the fruit on the tree from about 2 feet away.
awesome awesome tree. one day I will have a few of those trees. one day.
lucky lucky you. enjoy
