Several of the rootstocks I am using in this experiment were selected because of favorable growth patterns I've personally witnessed or because of anecdotle reports that it may grow better in a particular type of soil. I used a combination of Monoembryonic and Polyembryonic Mango seeds because of the reports in CRFG and other sources that hint to Monoembryonic Mango trees being more resistant to Powdery Mildew whereas Polyembryonic Mango trees are reported to give better resistance to Anthracnose.

I would like to thank Mangofang(Gary) for sharing his seeds from his large Manilla Mango tree with me. Manilla is going to be the primary rootstock I attach all other seedlings to because of its proven ability to grow in my high pH, heavy clay and low oxygen soils. I will likely test out other varieties as the "Main" rootstock such as Fairchild(thanks for recommendation Zands), Lemon Zest and Sweet Tart. If I can get a hold of some Kesar seeds, I would like to test it out as the main rootstock as well.

Simon

Simon,
I have made 2 Fairchild seedling rootstock for you for your trials.  I will give them to you (should they survive) when I see you in September.

btw, do you really get anthracnose in San Diego?

If you can't find one in San Diego... you can always mail order one from Top Tropicals.  They have 5 seven gallon Sweet Tart trees in stock right now...certified to ship to CA.

Simon,

#5 would have been J-12.  That tart component was a deciding factor for me too.

The colorful ones are Kents from Mexico.  They are in season and have been good to excellent.

131
I look for the ones with the widest shoulders and generally disregard color. The ones Warren picked up were exceptional. I had the pleasure of tasting one and it was one of the best Kents I've had in years.

Simon

Simon,
Actually, the Kent I brought today was from Tropic Star brand bought at Ambala Cash and Carry in Artesia. 9 medium sized Kent's for $4.  These were better (sweeter) than the Bunny brand from Costco (6 for $6).  Although I will say the Costco ones were much larger.

Knlim000,
I don't think it's worth the time and gas to return the green fruit, even though Costco has the best no hassle return policy.
But next time, you know which ones are the best to pick.
My experience is that greener Kents from Mexico in our July summer are way better than any colored Kent's from South America in our winter.

132
You can eat it when they soften a little.  The one in the lower left corner will be sweeter than the others.  I recently bought the bunny brand in SoCal Costco and that was my experience.  I did try to find boxes with the most red/orange/yellow fruit coloring
But overall, these are some of the best Mexico Kent's we have had in the last few years.
Even the green ones were decent.

I thought there was but couldnt find it. Why they did it wasnt mentioned, maybe they figured there may be advantages in salinity tolerance, preferred soil types. Maybe they wanted to see if an intergeneric rootstock would dwarf the mango topstock?  Im not sure. Successful intergeneric graft successes are rare.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango -- SoCal heatwave damages
« on: June 23, 2016, 12:13:10 AM »
Geez Gary...122F?  I had more damage to cherimoya and avocado leaves than to mango leaves...and that was only 106F for me.  But I did lose a few mango fruits.
Another heat wave is coming, but it shouldn't be as bad as we had last weekend.

ben mango,

They look like glenn's to me.
Any pics of the inside?
Glenn's have orange flesh and have relatively thin seeds...and are fiberless.
Glenn's can be sweet, but have no tartness.
They give off a strong aroma when ripe.
To me, they smell better than they taste.

here are some glenn pics from my trees for comparison:

JF,

The ST Maui's on my tree (before the fruit fell off) looked more like pic 2.
I don't recall seeing any with that tiny beak on pic 1.

Who knows...maybe I have a mislabeled tree.

Found Banganpalli mangos in Little India (Artesia) today.  From Mangozzz... $40 for a box of 10 (limited supplies...8 boxes)  The quality of the fruit (and taste) was not as good as the kesars a few weeks ago.  But the Banganpalli's were larger than the kesars.  Some of the mangos had black spots.  The guy at Ambala was nice enough to swap bad ones out.  Heard that Banganpalli's are also at Farm Fresh, but couldn't check them out since they closed early (8pm).

The item description was a little confusing.  But I interpreted the statement as variety Wise.  Wise is an old time variety from Miami.  I don't recall it ever being identified as a giant mango.  Perhaps squam256 or bsbullie can provide a better answer...I recall reading a TFF post within the last year on wise mango.

I just bought a box of kesar mango  . It is the most expensive mango box I ever bought in my life $30.00/box. I hope it is good like everybody said . The fruits are still green, so I have to wait a few days . I wonder if I can grow this tree from seed. Do you know where I can find a tree to buy?

Dragon,
Kesar cannot be grown from seed.
In your area, Ong's Nursery and Bonita Creek Nursery are two source for grafted mango trees, but I'm not sure if they have kesar.  You can call them and inquire.

Yup, only ten Alphonsos in that box for $40. If I were looking for a deal, I would have picked up a box of 18 small Manilla mangos for $6.99, lol. What can I say, I really love mangos and variety is the spice of life. How were the quality of the mangos you picked up?

Simon

The kesars I picked up were excellent.  I tried a few that were not optimally ripe and they had a little more tartness than an optimally ripe one.  They were very sweet, but I did not take a brix test.  There is fiber at the seed, but that didn't bother me since there is no fiber everywhere else.  Looks like I will be taking weekly trips to the Indian stores until the season ends.  Haven't seen banganpalli or Alphonso's yet in Artesia stores yet.

Simon,

That Alphonso seems so small...next to Kesar.  And Kesar is small.  Really...there were only 10 premium Alphonso's in that box for $40?
The better deal seems to be with the $30 box of 12-13 regular Kesars.

Just picked up 4 cases...just like Simon's at the big Pioneer Cash and Carry in Artesia.
$30 for 12 or 13 kesars.
They had at least  60 cases.

Simon,

What's the early season going rate?  $24-$32/box?

145
I looked up previous TFF posts on Diamond (HW 14) mango after Diamond mango recently appeared for sale on eBay.  I recall that it did not get sparkling reviews.

Nice mango cocktails JF!
You are challenging fruit4me's SoCal reign on number of mango varieties on 1 tree.

I had emailed Brokaw Nursery about California Pride mango and they were kind enough to respond. It was cultivated in the 1960s in Camarillo California. It's roughly 10oz, high in fiber, and not very sweet :D. Most importantly, they do not ship to FL :D.

Thanks TnTrobbie!
I was curious on its parentage, but after Brokaw's response....I'd have to ask...why would anybody be interested in propagating another Tommy-like mango.  The only thing I could possibly think of is that the tree does well in a cooler coastal climate.

May be grasshoppers.  They love to eat younger leaves.

Ricshaw,
Did you see a graft line on the tree?  I don't see one in the pic you provided, but then again, quite a bit of the stem is obstructed by leaves.  I definitely don't see a low graph line like you would typically see on a Florida-grown tree.  Curious if this is just a seedling.  I'm thinking only a Hansen employee will be able to answer your question....if you can find one...but they do have a phone number.

Congrats Bill!
Looking good.  Great new variety side.  Interesting...no Coconut Cream...but the parent Gary.
