If you consider Glenn as early....they ripen between August thru October in Orange County, CA.
I recall that LaVerne Nursery has acknowledged they are the easiest grafted variety to grow in SoCal.

Mike,

Thank you for the explanations.
I'd imagine that someday everything will be bar-code scanned and PIN will know exactly what their inventory is electronically....and can link directly to their website.
I am still a fan of PIN.  I have received excellent customer support by e-mail and phone.

ClayMango,

Yes...definitely true if you try to buy directly (retail) from PIN and ship to CA.

However, if you buy the "off-the-shelf" mango trees in CA, you will find them priced at about $50-$69 (reasonable for CA).  The retailers in SoCal get a much better deal at wholesale prices from PIN.  But the "off-the-shelf" choices here locally in SoCal are very limited (from PIN and LaVerne)...and always seem to be the "usual suspects" Kent, Keitt, Haden, Carrie, Alphonso, Florigon, Mallika, Timotayo, Lancetilla, Glenn, Gold Nugget, NamDoc Mai, and Valencia Pride.
Hence, why I
1) am working on the SoCal Mango Scion Exchange Project....to get more varieties in our yards at the lowest cost.
2) tried to persuade Champa Nursery and GreenMart nurseries to order "different" (other than the usual suspects) varieties from PIN this year.

One more thing about PIN.  They have more varieties available that what is listed on the their website, but they also do not show what is not available. They do get some of Zill's varieties (Sunrise, Coconut Cream, Galaxy + others) once in a while.  I have confirmed that you have to e-mail them periodically to find out what is in stock.  I sometimes call because I have gotten to know Martha over at PIN.

You talked about TT.  The one thing nice about TT is that they post all their info on availability on their website.
Good luck with your new mango trees.  You definitely have chosen a great line-up...the best of the best.
BTW, I'm a little surprised TT will ship to you in "cold" February.

Update:
I've also posted updates to the original post.

But to recap:
We are confirmed for Friday March 7, 2014 at 11am.  (Please be there at least 15 minutes earlier if possible.)
Are any of you interested in buying plants/trees from LaVerne?  They are willing to sell to us directly. What are you interested in buying?  I can ask them to make certain plants/trees available.  Probably should bring some cash!

Tour is 1.5-2 hours long and will cover
1) mangos
2) other subtropicals (cherimoyas, guava, papaya, dragonfruit, passionfruit, etc)
3) avocados
4) cherries
5) citrus!
Do you want to see anything else?  I can request other areas to be shown.

You can take pictures of the plants and nursery, but NOT THE PERSONNEL OR WHAT THEY ARE WORKING ON.

It will be a walking tour.  The nursery has a mud & gravel surface.  Please bring comfortable walking shoes.

LaVerne Nursery's address is:
355 N Main, Piru, CA 93040
(805)521-0115

ricshaw,
I recommend NOT posting on the CRFG webpage because our arrangements are for a small tour group.
However, you can pass this information to your CRFG friend in Ventura County.  Thanks.

506
Ricshaw,
I think it would be okay to have attendees outside the TFF....our attending group is still relatively small (< 10).  I just need to know count for now.  I'll let everyone know if LaVerne needs names too.

507
Gary,

You can carpool with me.  I am probably the only one (on the current list) that is east of Los Angeles...but a little south.  Or I can pick you up from a location near the 10 Fwy and 605 Fwy.
It could be worse...I think shaneatwell is coming from San Diego.

508
I've updated the original post.

Looks like FRI March 7 it will be.
I have confirmed the date and 11am start time with LaVerne.

UPDATED 02/28/14
So far, we have wslau, ricshaw, shaneatwell, MangoFang, fruit4me, fyliu+1, emegar, John B, Bestday, Osito, and NaturalGreenthumb  interested in going.

Any other RSVPs?

....

These seedlings are just all over the map as far as I can see as far as being like
their parent.  Poly-embryonic similarity might really not be that accurate.....and No, I think Ataulfo
is much smaller and slimmer than my Manila....

G

I'm going with the theory that the mango propagators are accidentally raising the zygote and not the clone.  The literature that I read says the zygote is the one that is different in size (i.e. larger) relative to the other shoots...but can't remember where I read this.

Regarding cherries....I'll share some with you if yours don't fruit.  Gotta protect them from birds too!

510
Gary,

Should be a good mango year!
I didn't know you had a Minnie Royal and Royal Lee cherry.
My pair have just started flowering white and pink.  Didn't have much chill either.  Lets see if it fruits this year.

511
We've had some Mango takes this winter we are perfecting our techniques

JF,

I hope you are Ashok can show us your techniques soon.  My mango graft success rate is worse than Gary's.

512
Just updated the original post.  See above.

I wanted to know if any of the SoCal mango enthusiasts are interested in a tour of LaVerne Nursery in Piru, CA.
I met the Director of Operations at last week's Cherimoya tasting event and he informed me today that LaVerne can accomodate a small group tour of their 80-acre facility.

Who is interested? PLEASE RSVP to me.

UPDATED 2/28/14:
Unfortunately, the nursery cannot accomodate weekends because of their busy spring schedule.
However, the schedule is looking okay for Fridays.

The date is confirmed:
FRI March 7, 2014
11am (please be there 15 minutes earlier if possible)
Tour is 1.5 to 2 hours in duration (Mangos, other subtropicals, avocados, cherries, citrus....what else would you like to see?)

Bring good walking shoes...Nursey has a mud and gravel surface.

Pictures and video of plants and the nursery can be taken.  However, NO PICTURES OF LAVERNE PERSONNEL OR WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS ALLOWED.

Plant/tree purchases will be made available to usCash payment only on 3/7/14.  I am submitting the pre-order list to LaVerne on SAT 03/01/14 .

LaVerne Nursery's address is:
355 N Main, Piru, CA 93040
(805)521-0115

More updates to follow.

Great choices ClayMango!  I've heard so many good things about the varieties you have chosen.

Pine Island is well run and has always answered my emails in a timely manner, such as just last week. Mango availability and in what size is best answered by email I would think. The shipping and phytosanitary certificate California are what kills you so prolly good to get a few 7 gallon mangoes, not just 3 gallon. Any maybe a group order

I now can agree.  I had a question on the Sunset mango and the PIN staff were wonderful and persistent in getting an answer/response from both Dr. Richard Campbell and Zills.

Just ran across this announcement from the CRFG Foothill Chapter....in case you missed the OC scion event a few weeks ago.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
February 1, 2014, 9:30 am: Annual Scion Wood Exchange
Los Angeles Arboretum

Annual Scion Wood Exchange and Grafting demonstration. Bring your favorite cultivars (but not ones with current patents). Martin Koning-Bastiaan will do a grafting demonstration, assisted by other experienced chapter members' thoughts and techniques.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Yellow Pirie Mango
« on: January 27, 2014, 10:39:30 PM »
John,

My father, who is from Hawaii, thinks the White Pirie was a descendant of the Yellow Pirie.  He recommended that you check with the University of Hawaii if you cannot get answers from this forum.

519
Gary,
If I recall correctly, you can ask Home Depot to special order a tree from LaVerne.  They will contact LaVerne to check its availability.  And it's still only $49.98 for a 5 gallon tree. Armstrong can also special order, but I don't remember how much they charge.

You should probably contact Oscar (fruitlovers).  I believe he sells scions for this variety (aka Kasturi).

521
So far, Kent seedlings have done the best for me too as rootstock.

How many fruits should I let it hold 3-4?

JF,

Is that all?  That is not enough to share with us...   :(
but that is one great looking tree!

At the Irvine cherimoya tasting event today, I got a chance to chat with the Director of Nursery Operations of LaVerne Nursery (Piru, CA).

Here is the latest information on La Verne SoCal mangos:
1. La Verne will soon begin to sell grafted Alphonso mangos.
2. La Verne is experimenting with Turpentine rootstock.
Manila seedling is currently used for rootstock.  I was told that LaVerne uses the largest/healthiest sprout as rootstock.
3. I discussed their practice of high mango graft lines and expressed a desire (on behalf of home growers/enthusiasts) for a lower graft line.   LaVerne practices veneer grafts, and the high graft lines appears to give them the most opportunities for success if the initial graft fails.
4. I was informed that a new mango orchard(s) in Ojai, CA is in the works.  Watch out Coachella Valley!
5. I submitted a list of commonly bought/desired mango trees (by the SoCal Tropical Fruit Forum members) in hopes of encouraging LaVerne to begin experimenting with other varieties for SoCal propagation. They currently only propagate Glenn, Gold Nugget, Haden, Keitt, Kent, Manila, Nam Doc Mai#4, Thompson, Timotayo, Tommy Atkins,  Valencia Pride, and Villasenor. In general, LaVerne will always be less expensive than PIN, TT, and POG because of shipping costs to CA.  However, I was told that LaVerne’s mango propagation program is currently limited by the availability of a reliable source of budwood and the ability of that mango variety to thrive in the SoCal climate.

Some pics from the event:  A good-sized crowd attended the event.
I liked 2 of the samples (#1 and #19) that were both sweet and tart with both pineapple and banana flavors.

Line to get in:

Display Table:

1 of 3 tables with 19 cherimoya varieties to sample:

Not to hijack the thread....but I met the Director of Nursery Operations from LaVerne Nursery at the Irvine cherimoya tasting event and had a good discussion on mangos with him.  LaVerne will soon carry Alphonso.  He asked me to forward a list of mangos that SoCaler's like...and we also talked about the LaVerne high grafts!
