Citrus General Discussion / Re: Grafting: mix & match varieties
« on: June 09, 2015, 03:20:44 AM »

The newer varieties of grapefruit are so sweet they don't need sugar, and a good mandarin is hard to beat, so those would be my choices.

I'm genuinely interested in hearing the name of those grapefuits varieties. I have an Oroblanco (or Sweetie. Still have to understand if they are different, but here everyone seems convinced they are synonyms) and i'm thinking to add some grapefruits but i'm still undecided on their names, and sweeter is better from my viewpoint.

The case of Oroblanco-Sweetie is similar to the case of Chandler- Jafa red pomelo.
Israelis know the truth. Most likely they are identical cultivars, but Israelis say that they just have same parentage - crosses come from same parents, but are not the same - i think it is just the game of trademarks and licenses.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Xie Shan Satsuma
« on: June 09, 2015, 03:00:53 AM »
I can agree with Millet in case of satsuma taste. I have Miyagawa tree in 100 liters pot and I bought it in 2007 from Italian nursery in Lamezia Terme region. The fruits are better and better. The crop from 2013 was the best so far, great totally sweet fruits with rich flavour. In 2014 it has no crop - strongly alternate bearer and now it is full of fruits, so I am waiting eagerly for new fall crop.
Higher graft protects against frost close to the ground. It is not only about protection of the graft union point, but whole grafted part.

Have any enemies?

The last time I saw something on this scale, it was a friend of mine who lost thousands in investments because someone who didn't like him sprayed roundup on most of his plants and trees.  They all died in similar, quick fashion.

Hopefully no one has hit you with a bunch of herbicide.  I'd have your ground tested ASAP.

Check the root systems and see if the death is starting below.  I highly douby this is pest/fungal/mildew/bact related, as many of those varieties are resistant to such and wouldn't die that fast in the first place.  Even viral wouldn't do this withour the plany showing signs of fighting it first.  This definitely looks like chemical damage.

Better make sure your city didn't send out a notice about flushing your water lines recently.  You may have killed them with watering if so.

I think that you are right.

I have similar experiences, I bought w. sarawakensis, angustifolia and tampirik from 3 sources in this forum, but all seeds rotted once sown.

If you are looking for ornamental citrus, go for Flying dragon : 100% cold/frost hardiness.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Pear thread
« on: May 09, 2015, 03:36:30 PM »
I have never been a huge pear fan but decided to try a kind that i hadnt seen in the shops before because it looked totally different to the varieties I had seen before.
It was called Beurre Bosc it's a dirty brown looking pear with a very thin neck but it has converted me And I think I would possibly choose it over an apple even!
All the.temperate fruit.in the high end supermarkets is pretty good quality here(if in season) they have never named the varieties before much but are slowly starting luckily:)

What cultivators do you find are your favorite?

Here it is called "Boskova flaška", means - Bosc's bottle.
It is one of the main varieties.

I bought 2 seeds on August and seeds arrived after one month.  When seeds arrived, they were fully sprouted with big root. Upper part was dead, but root looked OK, so I sow it. I watered it frequently and check the root from time to time to see if it still looks alive. Finally, after 8 months it pushes new plant above the ground  !!!

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / satsuma Iwasaki

I want to buy budwood of satsuma Iwasaki within European Union.

What about picture of the seed and description of the taste?

We discussed this topic several times, yes there is higher concentration of Parkinson like (not true Parkinson) disease in Caribbean area and some scientists assume, that it has ties to annona muricata, but not because of consumption of fruits, but  because of local habits to brew tea from leaves and roots.

137
Tabo has white pulp.
I think Tabo fruit is willughbeia elmerii.
They looks similar, i mean Tabo and elmerii has big seeds and also rounded.
They are also big fruits.
If you're looking for Willughbeia cochinchinensis maybe i can help you.
Yeah, I think the same
I was looking for wilughbeia cochinchinensis too, but now I read that it is sour with very little sugar and I preffer sweet or well balanced sweet/sour fruits. If you know about  wilughbeia cochinchinensis which is not too sour I am interested.

Shape of the leafs resembles annona purpurea to me.

A. Jahnii seeds are of a size of A. Spraguei seeds.

After 4 months on way and 1 month in the ground, annona jahnii seeds are sprouting, they are really classic annona tough guys.  8)

BTW: Alex, here is one annona which slightly resembles annona cornifolia, it is annona nutans.

Radoslav,

Sorry to hear that it is not a good tasting producer for you. How hot do your summers get? I wonder if that cultivar might need a lot of heat to produce sugars?

The problem is not a sugar level, it is sweet but tasteless. For me jujube is nothing to bite twice, when you have garden full of cherries, peaches, plums,  apricots, pears and apples.

Seeds arrived today, thanks a lot. I have a question, you described Tampirik seeds as : "Tampirik seeds smaller than Willughbeia angustifolia seeds, and has a black seeds color.", but color of seeds of Tampirik I got looks different. Is it just different light on your picture or what?

My seeds (Sawarakensis on the left, Tampirik on the right)

Hi Radoslav,

I took the photos while it was still wet.
I cleaned the seeds and took the photos, but when i took the photos it was totally different colored.
When the seeds dry, the tampirik seeds become a little brown.

Thanks for info, it gives a sense.

I have a big tree/bush here in zone 6, it is Li 2 cultivar, I have to say, that for me, the only interestig thing on this plant is a smell of miniature flowers, the fruits which resemble mini apples are nearly tasteless something like very poor quality apple.

Artocarpus can take from cuttings too.

Yes almost any plant can take from cuttings, using rooting hormone, mist house and waiting many months. That doesn't mean you want to start artocarpus from cuttings. Have you ever tried it? Not easy and not practical, especially for a plants that mostly fruit rather fast from seed, for eample jackfruit.

The question was, if it is possible or not - with connection to identical behaviour inside genus or family, no how practical it is. Here is guidance for those who want to try to propagate artocarpus by cuttings:
