Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are there superior Dragonfruit varieties?
« on: January 31, 2018, 12:09:34 PM »

Why are cuttings or fruit pricey?

Cuttings are free for many of us ($10. for most others).

Imported fruit is Supply and Demand...  there is not enough supply to keep prices down.

I have my avocados on a south facing wall. I've heard of farmers planting dragon fruit as a companion to the avocado. Anyone know if this would work?

I have done it...  but the Dragon Fruit was in pots and the Avocado tree was pruned heavily to let in sun and control the height.

In the end game whatever grows best in your area. While the yellow MA may indeed be sweetest you have to wait a while to grow one to bear fruit and after every flowering many months to ripen, it has thorns, and mature plants are not available. The whites are generally less flavorful but some are large. The pinks and reds are generally less flavorful than yellow but some of them are not self-fertile so much labor and luck might be required to get any fruit at all. Many considerations here, in other words.

West coast is quite different conditions from what DF has evolved in. Florida is actually closer to the climate of their origin. Lots to think about.

I disagree.  The pinks and reds are generally more flavorful, but less sweet than the yellow Megalanthus.

Yellow
YELLOW

Which “Yellow” Dragon Fruit?

Not all Dragon Fruit sold as “Yellow” taste good IMO.

Huge difference between Yellow Megalanthus and Yellow Undatus Dragon Fruit.

So I purchased a few more of these today and I bought the ones with the pieces of the DF stem on them still.
Is there anything special I should do to them to make sure they take?
- Rooting hormone?
- Making a newer cut at the base to encourage root growth?
- Should I use a "humidifier" - ie, since I'm using red solo cups do I put a plastic bag over the cups?
thanks

I asked a friend who successfully rooted a piece of giant yellow Megalanthus your question.

He said;
Many people just root them like normal cuttings.
This time of year is not the ideal time for cuttings.
I rooted my megalanthus in the winter time and I had to bring it inside into a sunny window amd place a heating mat underneath.

Yes, possible.

note these are written a while ago and some of my opinions have changed with growing things since then, but the basics hold true for grafting.
some of the articles are here: http://kadasgardens.com/Articles.html
because hylocereus have thin ribs, they dehydrate super fast.  i would graft tips, or cut the tips and wait for new offsets to emerge and graft teh new offsets for a thicker, rounder scion that is a hundred times easier to work with.
note this is mainly focused on using hylocereus as the root stock for slower and rarer cactus species, but it would be the logical rootstock for a hylocereus plantation as well so may be useful.
http://kadasgardens.com/grafting5.html
and if you are a breeder and trying to get new seeds up to snuff, this is the the best option for such endeavors.
http://kadasgardens.com/grafting1.html

Several Southern California Dragon Fruit hobbyist are interested and have shared pictures on Facebook of grafting Dragon Fruit onto hylocereus stock.
I am sure that it can be done, but still waiting for pictures of success getting the grafts to flowering stage.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Define "dappled shade"...
« on: January 18, 2018, 11:48:18 AM »
Dappled shade = filtered sunlight. The kind of condition that you get when you use shade cloth. That is very different from full shade, where no sun shines through, or partial shade, where you may have shade for x number of hours and sun for x number of hours.

Wouldn't there be different levels of "dappled shade"...  like 30%, 50%, 70%, etc.?

I like fig trees.

I am not interested in seeds...  I am waiting for cuttings.

"Most of the avocado roots are in only the top six inches of soil and are under the canopy out to the drip line."

From:
https://www.californiaavocadogrowers.com/sites/default/files/documents/Irrigating-Avocados-Fact-Sheet.pdf
I did know about that, but it doesn't answer my questions.
I did find some sources stating 5-20 gallons several times per week once adults, but there is a big difference between 5 and 20 plus "several" is even more generic.

Did you bother to look at the link I provided above? HOW MUCH WATER TO USE:

Citrus General Discussion / Ground breaking ACP discovery
« on: January 07, 2018, 03:56:13 PM »
December 13, 2018

“In a ground-breaking discovery encompassing six years of research, an international team of scientists led by UC Davis chemical ecologist Walter Leal announced they've identified the sex pheromone of the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), an insect that feeds on citrus and transmits the bacteria that causes the deadly citrus greening disease known as Huanglongbing (HLB).”

There must surely be rare varieties of avocado with superior flavor to the ubiquitous haas.

There are probably several recommendations... but a properly tree ripened Hass Avocado tastes very good IMO.

Simon, I apologize for taking so much of your time. I didn't mean to give you the burden of providing proof, just trying to figure out if anyone has a giant and a normal growing and fruiting together. At this time, it sounds like the answer is no, but you may soon. For the record, I hope that a giant variety exists.

The giant Megalanthus variety Fruit is now being sold in the U.S.

People are buying it, sharing pictures, and growing the seeds.

I’m not sure if this is legit, but it’s an interesting concept. Seedlings grafted onto mature stems.

Legit attempts to grafting seedlings onto mature Dragon Fruit stems.

Waiting for pictures of success.

43
Thank you Simon for the update.
I believe that the Giant Megalanthus seeds will grow true because, like Vietnam DF, I doubt that every Gisnt Megalanthus plant in Ecuador is a clone from the same one plant.
I also doubt that Giant Megalanthus growers in Southern California will have the same results as Ecuador growers... but definitely worth trying.

I would like to buy new dragon fruit varieties cuttings from Mattslandscape.com, but it looks like they don't ship outside US. I tried to email them but did not get any reply so far. It's a shame as cuttings are easy to ship worldwide. Anyway, if someone from Mattslandscape read my message, please do not hesitate to contact me, thanks in advance. email address : lejardinauxmillefruits@gmail.com
p;s : my delivery address is in France.

There may be some issues with ordering from the Mattslandscape web site.

Use the Mattslandscape web site for reference and order from Matt's Facebook page or from Epicacti Nursery the walk-in nursery location for the Mattslandscape.com web site.

And yes, they have shipped cuttings outside the US.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: southern california blue berry soil?
« on: December 01, 2017, 06:12:50 PM »
This worked for me;

Let's talk Blueberries...
https://www.ottoandsons-nursery.com/FruitTrees/Blueberry.html

In containers

Starting with a 5 gallon size plant, you need 'Soil Mix' of:
1/3 …Organic Potting Soil/Peat Moss
1/3 ...Azalea/Acid Mix
1/3 …¼" Pathway Bark
A liberal handful of Soil Sulfur.

Blend your mix & add the soil sulfur. Next you will need a 16"-20" pot (clay is always best & the bigger the better to allow root-growth & cut-down on shifting).
A few stones or some gravel or pottery-chards, to help keep the drainage hole open, and you are ready to plant!

Pack the bottom of your container with the soil mix. Set the Blueberry bush in and adjust the soil level, leaving 1"-2" for watering.
Just firm the new soil around the root-ball, give a generous watering & now wait for your Blueberry crop to come in!
On breakfast cereal, in muffins, or just FRESH! Hello anti-oxidants!

Additional hints:
Never let Blueberries dry out. Fertilize with an Acid based fertilizer about once a month. Liquid Fish Emulsion, will do the trick. Blueberries love full sun. Plant several varieties for better pollination & a larger yield per plant.

Richard or anyone,
do you have any infor on these varieties?  color, taste, texture, size of fruit?  thanks

Paisley
Townsend Pink
AX
Hawaiian Gold

Wayne,  There are so many varieties and such an overlap with some... I have a problem keeping track of the newer ones I have experienced.

Paisley and Ax I have. I do not remember tasting Paisley. Edgar gave me a cutting so I am growing it.
Tasted Ax, it is good. I am growing it as part of my Asunta DF purple flower collection.

Today was the day...
BRIX measured 22
It is a winner... tasted very good,
but not very productive or good grower for me.

Man that looks good, and did it taste like something similar to explain? like everyone says one of the Asunta's has a hint of cinnamon,  I love that it looks unique too. Thanks for Sharing info

It tasted like Megalanthus, not complex, just sweet. I think that the uniqueness of hybrid and the flesh color are a plus.

Slow grower, but taste? what i read is a great taste. haven't tried. thanks. i also read stuff shortly about Asunta DF, But not much info where to get. just a couple of youtube videos of Edgar Valdivia. Thanks for input

In a couple of days I will be able to comment on taste.

My first (and only) Frankie's Red fruit.

Don't get me started on "Asunta".  There is not just one variety of Asunta.

There are Edgar's Asunta 1, 2, 3, & 4 and "Asunta" seedlings Edgar gave people who most are calling Asunta 4 & 5.
Thanks i Was able to find out very little info about Asunta DF, but cant wait in a couple of days please update comment on taste. also any insight on the Asunta's thanks
