I don't know the variety beyond "red dragonfruit" sold at home depot.

What feel should I be looking for? I enjoy a crispy dragonfruit.

Sounds like Red-flesh La Verne Nursery Dragon Fruit.

Should feel slightly soft like ripe avocado.

If all red, pick it now.

52
It has turned a dark, rich red and is quite large. How do I know when to pluck it?

Color depends on variety.  So feel and experience will have to be the indicator if you do not know the variety. Does the fruit feel slightly soft?

I would pick it and refrigerate it now.

Slow grower, but taste? what i read is a great taste. haven't tried. thanks. i also read stuff shortly about Asunta DF, But not much info where to get. just a couple of youtube videos of Edgar Valdivia. Thanks for input

In a couple of days I will be able to comment on taste.

My first (and only) Frankie's Red fruit.

Don't get me started on "Asunta".  There is not just one variety of Asunta.

There are Edgar's Asunta 1, 2, 3, & 4 and "Asunta" seedlings Edgar gave people who most are calling Asunta 4 & 5.

55
Frankie's Red is a Hylocereus megalanthus and Hylocereus polyrhizus cross.

Here in SoCal Hylocereus megalanthus is one of the Dragon Fruit least tolerant to high heat and cold temperatures.

It has been my experience that Frankie's Red is a slow grower.

Oh boy, if it aint Chris from Growquest, hah!  That video was shot in 2013.  I wonder if he's out of jail yet, or still living considering how many he's ripped off?

Also, it's Hass aka H-ASS, not Hoz!

not sure. I have a couple at home which I can take a picture of when we get back. dragon identification is not my forte.

Here is what Whole Foods is selling:

That is the real deal.... save some seeds for people looking for yellow Dragon Fruit seeds.  ;)

My friend who took one of the Megalanthus pictures above said this about it;
"The brix exceed 25 one of the sweetest fruits ive ever had. Like eating a honeydew with sugar on it."

that seems to be what we're getting in the local Whole Foods. Not super sweet, but a pleasant sweetness. The seeds are much more pronounced than other varieties, but I like them. Gives a little extra complexity.

Not this one?

Mattslandscape.com says;
Species-SELENICEREUS CONIFLORUS- Has a Large nocturnal (night blooming) Flower in white with gold back petals. The growth is rope like and the bloom and growth only differs slightly from The following varieties, which should all probably be reduced to varieties or synonyms of S. grandiflorus, as their stems and flowers differ only slightly: S. urbanianus, S. coniflorus, S. hondurensis, S. pteranthus, S. kunthianus, S. brevispinus, S. boeckmannii, S. macdonaldii, S. rothii. SELENICEREUS CONIFLORUS-Has stem growth more cylintrical and is not as thick as S.Grandiflorus but otherwise is very simular. Requires the same growing culture as Hybrid Epiphyllums, a few hours of direct sunlight required to bloom well. Blooms from late July to September in Southern California,U.S.A. climate-coastal region. This variety was first discovered/published in Mexico-1904. THE PLANTS OR CUTTINGS OFFERED HERE WERE GARDEN CULTIVATED AND WERE NOT REMOVED FROM THERE NATIVE HABITAT.

On ebay. For example this seller

I don't know if there are cheaper offers

Not all Yellow Selenicereus Megalanthus is the same.

The current rage is the Giant Yellow Megalanthus from Ecuador.

If I was going to bother to grow yellow Megalanthus from seed...  I would try and get Giant Yellow Megalanthus seeds (rare).

What's the sweet yellow one that everyone raves about? And does it fruit in Florida? And is there a source anywhere for a cutting or two?

My lawn guys, in their infinite wisdom, decided to weed whack one of my dragons at the very base and killed it before I noticed.

The sweet one is Selenicereus Megalanthus.

But, not all Selenicereus Megalanthus are the same.

This South African video (very poor sound quality) talks about two yellow Megalanthus varieties.

This is the "giant" yellow Megalanthus from Ecuador that is showing up in the U.S.

People are buying this fruit from a tropical fruit seller in Houston, Texas.

Can anyone confirm if this is a purple haze cutting?
Thanks!

Only DNA testing can confirm a cutting is a Purple Haze clone!

Hey Ric, how do you rate the fruit of the Delight? I had only one spot left to plant and had to choose between Delight, Purple Haze and Physical Graffiti. I planted the Delight but still have the other two. Any thoughts?

All three are good. Physical Graffiti is my favorite.

Hey guys,
Iv'e been trying to grow df from cuttings, with undesirable results (slowww growth). I am unimpressed with grocery store fruits and would like to grow/try the less common cultivars. I can hardly get them to grow in cooler temperatures, and they seem to only like unfiltered sunlight, which I can only get in warm/hot months (since I live in Ohio). I can't tell if it's just inadequate lighting that is the issue, or maybe the soil or feeding regimen. Does anyone in cooler regions use supplemental lighting? If so, how is it working out for you?
Thanks in advance! :)

My guess is it is too cold where you live.

Hi Ric, was this offer directed towards me?

Yes, and if any left over... others.

I think Figs 4 Fun makes a good point:
http://figs4fun.com/basics.html

"In my experience I have developed a personal theory about fig taste. I have learned that my wife and I have very different tastes in figs.
Many people like dark colored figs. This was my original place on the spectrum.
Many people like light colored figs, I discovered these figs later in my experience.
Some people will eat any and every fig. I am almost here, now, but there is one remaining obstacle.
The dividing line seems to be between people who love Brown Turkey figs...
... and people, like me, who hate Brown Turkey figs.

I have two fig trees, grown from cuttings sent by people who were convinced that if I ate "their" Brown Turkey, I would be persuaded.
What I discovered was that one of these was a Celeste and the other something akin to Marseilles: both very nice figs, and doubtless why these people liked "Brown Turkey" figs."

I found cuttings of hylocereus ocamponis,What about the fruit?is the same of the "red undatus"?how hardy it is?

Valdivia Roja and El Grullo from Mexico are considered Hylocereus ocamponis. They were both UC acquisitions and in their Dragon Fruit collection.

The fruit may not be the sweetest or best tasting red Dragon Fruit, but considered good by many people. Hylocereus ocamponis has a high cold and heat tolerance.

73
Can anyone recommend a good way to acidify potting soil?

I would recommend using a container potting soil mix people use for blueberries in SoCal.

1/3 …Organic Potting Soil/Peat Moss
1/3 ...Azalea/Acid Mix
1/3 …¼" Pathway Bark
A liberal handful of Soil Sulfur.

I have a 3 foot long rooted cutting from a friend here, just transplanted it fron a ploy to the arbor, I read somewhere they like less water than the other varieties.

Are you thinking of the yellow Megalanthus variety?

This is what I got from growing the yellow dragon fruit from seeds after 4 years. The fruit that I got from a yellow dragon fruit seedling is red inside and outside.  Completely different fruit than the one I got seeds from a yellow dragon fruit in previous posts.  Why?
Plant is self fertility. No hand pollination is  needed. Plant does very well both in pot and in ground.

Why? Seeds do not produce clones of the fruit they come from. Each seed is a new hybrid.

By any chance...  did you sell cuttings of your yellow Dragon Fruit grown from seeds on eBay?  :(
