Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Florida Mango trees planted in California
« on: October 18, 2017, 01:28:36 PM »
There is plenty of La Verne Manila rootstock all over CA. There is no reason to ship Turpentine rootstock tree's to CA , because it's a waste of time and money in everyones's experience.

The Exotica mango tree's are the result of 6 weeks in FL during Mango season and access to thousands of Mango's for seed. They were processed for seed in Florida 2014 and then sent and planted in CA in a big greenhouse. Some were then grafted.

Rollinia do not like wind , dry soil or cold wet soil. There's been precious fruit holding as far north as Santa Barbara which seems like an anomaly . Lots of variation so keep trying . If your temps ever drop below 40 it's going to add to the degree of difficulty.

Thanks for the info Future!

Spaugh, I believe Joe simcox said all cactus fruit are edible though he's a being that is known to try tasting some things others would not touch with a 10 ft pole.

May I ask your approximate location and general planting conditions that make for good fruiting ,generally care free conditions ? I have a place to plant in Wayne county NC near a waterway and I'm wondering how good id do there. Thanks!

I have several trees, some from wild, but my favorite is Rebecca's Gold, which is large yellow fruit and matures earlier than my other trees' Fruits. I used to hand pollinate but didn't the past two seasons and still get more pawpaws than I can deal with for fresh eating or making preserves before having to give them away before they go bad. Out of all my fruit trees, paw paw is the easiest to care for; bug, disease, pest free fruit trees.

No need to judge, I try and give Aussie's a fair shot .

There is a ghetto nursery in Miami judging from this guy's speaking style... cracks me up listening to him talk about Bunchosia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjgwooVF2-U

Plenty of times. Killed way more tree's in my climate this way than by under watering, mostly potted of course.
Leaving town is often the best thing I can do for my tree's.

I bet someone is fruiting Kwai Muk in SoCal. MIne hung in for a winter or two in a 5 gallon but like all the artocarpus the cold winter soil and wild temperature swings were too much for it to be successful here. I always think different strains are variable so I'd try it again but there is that major difference between a dip into the 20's in Florida vs Cali.
Thanks for offering the seeds and the best pics I've seen posted.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Looking for planting help on jaboticaba

That's good advice John . I'd think in the desert partial shade and avoiding midday full sun would make for a happier Jaboticaba . I usually avoid putting them in full sun though I've noticed Grimal and Red seem to thrive with more heat .

Har, I'm headed to Guatemala in the spring. Could you provide any guidance on good area's to visit for scion, or any sort of collections that may exist ?
I see that we need a fruit friend to visit that area outside Aculpoco, Mexico on an Annona reconnaissance but it will take a local guide and a sharp individual.

I've got seedlings from the same source and seed batch that have very different looking foliage and leaf size and growth habits. I assume this is the nature of planting Pitangatuba seeds. I think fruit and flavor will differ as well, just much variation in seedlings which has been previously mentioned.

 Rob,
That's wonderful your getting the good CA Moyas. I'm sure your in the know for where to get them shipped from . That does not mean good cherimoya is easily available in CA. I have seen CA Cherimoya for sale outside of a farmers market once, from South Coast Organics ,  you may have had some shipped from them.
It would still never be a named variety.
I'm pretty sure you can get Arctic Star from Frog Hollow or Kashiwase , maybe even Twin Girls farm. They have tasting tables of 8-10 varieties that are cirrently being harvested to sample at the markets .
It's like if Zills, Squam and Don mango sold their mango's at the same farmers market side by side but a different farmers market location 6 days a week.
There's also Andy's Orchard that may ship you some amazing stone fruit  varieties as well.
So it's stone fruit overload in Nor Cal at least but good luck finding a good Cherimoya in season, there's just not enough farms growing Cherimoya and some of them are only 1 acre.
I'd like to remember the commercial cherimoya acreage in CA that was stated at one of the cherimoya assoc. meetings , it's not huge though.

Exactly, plant fruits that you love that are impossible to buy in the grocery store.
The grass is always greener on the other side but those stone fruits are easily available here.
It can be hard to find good Cherimoya in CA even you know someone , they're just not nearly as widely grown .

I have no problems getting the best moyas Cali has to offer, thats why I have been making these responses.

Really, tell me, where can you buy those Arctic Stars (just as one example)?  I have tasted a number of the better variety stones from you local farmer's markets and while better than in a grocery store, its no comparison to home grown (which I have also tasted).  There are certain top notch fruits available in terms of taste but you will never see them in stores due to undesirable characteristics for commercial marketing.  Oh. And yes, they are that good, as good as and some better than any mango or mo

Believe it or not. The fruit goes from small, medium and large growers to the farmers market or health food store . There is a farmers market in a different location in this county 6 days a week. None of the fruit is grown in the county but it comes grower direct as it should be. There could be a much more developed farmers market scene in Miami / homestead area from what I saw. Fruit stands are great but adding cooked food options, music provides a destination to hang out and buy multiple things like fresh seafood , fresh bread, generally freshly prepared whole foods. I guess I'm just trying to describe how there is more grower direct to consumer options and 10 types of zaiger stone fruits at multiple stone fruit selling farms 6 days a week , it's definitely better than stone fruit I pick tree rope around here but that has more to do with varietals.
Same as most everywhere the fruit and vegetables at the supermarket are inferior.
I should mention there is about 10 "health food" or "specialty " stores within 20 minute drive so it's just very different in many ways.

I find it a little hard to believe that you can get commercially grown stone fruits that are equal to homegrown, tree-ripened fruit, due to the fact that they have to picked hard to withstand handling and shipping.  Maybe if the fruit went directly from a small, specialty grower to a fruit stand or a specialty store...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: CRFG Festival of Fruit
« on: August 01, 2017, 01:37:12 PM »
I recall the Heirloom festival edition happening now. The most recent HTFG and FOF colab was 2013 with the Cruise.
I totally agree about OC Chapter. They have the biggest plant sales, and member participation representing at fruit events far and wide that I have seen from all the chapters, plus the growing conditions and collections from people in that chapter are surely pretty amazing.
Santa Clara has one nursery that has semi interesting sub tropical fruit tree offerings and they are supplied by exotica . I don't think there's anyway the garden tours could be on the same level if we're talking cRfg. Location it's pretty central for the Nor Cal chapters and they have a good home base at Prusch Park. Maybe it will spurn someone to make that big Jaboticaba at Prusch Park beautiful with a haircut  ;), the central leader was topped and it's a sideshow bob bush .
All the work days are geared towards maintaining the Heritage Orchard of stone fruit , figs and the like with pruning and mulching. I've never heard of any work parties or seen any maintenance done on the Sub Tropical fruit orchard  :o ::)
All the Sub Tropicals are pushing forward there but they could certainly be fruiting and living a lot better.

One of the SF Bay area chapters did do a joint one with the Heirloom Festival some years ago. There was also a joint one with HTFG in 2011. That one was good except with the Federal Government closure because of budget stalemate. We didn't get to see the Hilo USDA collection.

I would like to see the OC chapter put one on. I don't know when they last hosted one. I think they did a lot behind the scenes for things like the joint HTFG one so maybe they feel like 2011 was theirs. OC is a good location in the middle of SoCal. Santa Clara is probably good for up north.

Yeah, 5 gallon avocado trees are $40 tops everywhere.
When I bought tree's from Epicenter they were $35 or $40 depending on duke or bacon rootstock. Duke they had to order a bunch , Bacon they just started from seed.

Thank you sir! That's too bad. Santa Clara chapter has a chance to put on a good one.
This made me wonder about which CRFG chapters have hosted F.O.F. The most over the years and which chapters have never hosted.
What where people's favorite throughout the years .
Ive heard Monterey Bay has hosted before ,
I think it would be neat to coordinate and cross promote with another event like the heirloom festival or somethin like that . Especially in a year when there's not a ton of energy to create the event from the ground up .

Jonah, no festival this year no Chapter wanted to step up, next up in your neck of woods Santa Clara Chapter hosting 2018.
