Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unique Mango Flush
« on: July 24, 2013, 11:44:44 PM »
Can someone is South Florida help me ID this mango by the flush. The seedling is 10 months old from Santo Domingo Cuba near Santa Clara. The locals call it mango Chino but it looks nothing like the mango Chino in the Fairchild collection. The fruit is round and flat like the Cushman, skin dark red and ground yellow. It weight over 4 pounds ...taste was juicy, sweet and not very aromatic .I posted pics of the mango last year but I can find them.

My a.reticulata is now blooming but I only have 20-30 flowers. I found 2 female flowers yesterday so I had to use atemoya pollen. Will this work?? I have plenty of cherimoya, atemoya and sugar apple pollen which one works best with custard apple??

People in SoCal are having problems growing this tree. The tree grows fine in Santa Ana that's not the problem, the fruits have been mediocre at best. I'm hoping this years crop will improve because I'm really impress with the tree and the production.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangos and powdery mildew
« on: March 13, 2013, 12:58:40 PM »
It is that time of year....Dense clouds are setting all over the southland in the early morning infecting our mango flowers. This happens during the months of April to June. You can control powdery mildew by applying a wettable or dust sulfur. I loss many flower stalks last year due to being lazy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango grafts in March
« on: February 27, 2013, 10:12:45 AM »
I've performed some grafts on several mangos a few days ago. The rootstock is pushing new growth and the budwood is budding ...... does it have a chance to take if our morning lows still reach the mid 40's and 50's?? I've had success in April and May but never in the fall, summer and winter months. This is the first time I've attempted it going into March.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Early Cherimoya Harvest
« on: January 21, 2013, 12:10:41 AM »
I have harvest almost all of my cherimoyas already(42 and 3 left). Seems to be a bit early this year. Last 2 years I've had cherimoya on my trees until June. Maybe it's the extreme weather we've been experiencing in the last 2 months? Any though on this?

this weeks harvest the fruits are about 1.5 pounds and under not as big as the December harvest but they are no longer splitting.
