Tropical Fruit Discussion / Socal Winter Haul
« on: January 18, 2013, 05:15:32 PM »
With the devastating arctic freeze behind us we are back in the mid 80's for the next few days so I decided to post a small winter haul. All grown locally. Avocado varieties: Pinkerton, Bacon, Si Prize (mine) and Fuerte. My Pierce and Booth cherimoyas.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Californians are bundling up with sweaters and gloves and stocking up on firewood as they endure the latest winter storm that has brought very unseasonable freezing temperatures.

The National Weather Service said records could fall as the cold snap stretches into the weekend.

"It's only going to get colder," NWS weather specialist Bonnie Bartling said. "Early Sunday, you're looking at possibly mid-30s in downtown Los Angeles." Long Beach could see temps dip into the low 30s, she said.

Freeze warnings were issued for Sunday morning across wide swaths of the LA Basin and San Diego County. Residents were being urged to cover outdoor plants and bring pets inside.

Morning frost was expected on San Diego and Los Angeles beaches. Big Sur, on the central coast, prepared for daytime highs almost 20 degrees below Boston's. Even the snowbird haven of Palm Springs saw temperatures hover around freezing at night. A low of 12 degrees was recorded in the snow-covered Big Bear mountain resort east of Los Angeles.

In addition, San Diego zookeepers turned up the heat for chimpanzees, tourists covered their hands on Hollywood walking tours, and some farmers broke out wind machines and took other steps to protect crops from freezing.

Traffic was flowing again on a major Southern California traffic artery that was severed for the second time in three days because of snow.

The Grapevine segment of Interstate 5 was reopened at 7:25 a.m. Saturday, about four hours after icy conditions forced the closure, the California Highway Patrol said. The key link between the Central Valley and Los Angeles was also shut for about 17 hours on Thursday, stranding hundreds of truckers and other motorists.

In Sonoma County, homeless shelters handed out extra warm clothes to protect people from frigid overnight temperatures.

Some customers drove more than an hour to buy firewood.

"It's crazy busy here," said Renea Teasdale, office manager at The Woodshed in Orange, south of Los Angeles.

Still, it was business as usual as much of the state contended with temperatures in the high 40s and low 50s.

"It's still sunny Southern California, and I'm going to work on my legs all year long," said Linda Zweig, a spokeswoman for the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which is hosting a 5-kilometer run north of San Diego on Sunday. The lifelong San Diego-area resident is prone to wearing two sweatshirts when the temperature drops but refuses to give up on shorts.

In the San Joaquin Valley, the heart of California's citrus production, growers prepared for another round of freezing temperatures early Sunday after seeing little crop damage Thursday and Friday nights.

"Last night was not a problem, but tonight and Monday morning could have the potential to be pretty cold," Paul Story, director of grower service at California Citrus Mutual, said Saturday.

Farmers run wind machines and water to protect their fruit, which can raise the temperature in a grove by up to 4 degrees, Story said. Existing moisture, sporadic rain and cloud cover can also help keep in heat.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Heavy Frost in Socal
« on: January 01, 2013, 04:37:15 PM »
This is what I woke up to on 12/31/12.....the worse frost I've seen at this location in 22 years. This was at 7:15am 37F. Last year on Christmas day it was 80F. This year it was barely 50F in Coronado Island in San Diego. What a difference a year makes.

front yard Flamboyant took it fine.

thick coat of ice on all of my truck's windows.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Winter protection
« on: October 24, 2012, 12:44:19 AM »
Night Temps are dropping to the low 60's so it's time to start thinking about protection for my cold-sensitive trees on the ground. Jackfruit fits that category, it completely defoliated last winter. Here is a makeshift portable greenhouse made out of cardboard boxes and furniture lining fabric. Suggestion, comments to improve it?

« on: September 23, 2012, 07:28:57 PM »
It started in late Aug. with my Tropical Pink and now I have 3 to 4 varieties dropping. The first TP were horrible but they are getting better. We don't put any to waste we either juice them or make guava marmalade, paste or shells. Here are pics of the different varieties and homemade marmalade. BTW, you eat this with cream cheese, queso fresco or you can put it in plain yogurt......absolutely delicious!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pickering Mango and Concha Picuda Chirimoya
« on: September 15, 2012, 05:39:07 PM »
Had our first Pickering mango. Taste wise, pretty close to the ones in Florida. Had a more subtle coconut after taste but a bit sweeter than the ones from Florida - 8 out 10. Concha Picuda Chirimoya, per contra, a bit disappointing. Fair texture but bitter near the skin. Taste a bit like a sugar apple with less seeds..... the flesh was segmented and chewy - 3 out of 10.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lisa Atemoya
« on: September 12, 2012, 09:18:26 PM »
I got my Lisa to fruit for the first time this year after hand pollination.. So far, the tree does not seem to be precocious, I had only 20 flowers. I notice that my friend's Lisa did not have many fruits last year. I have a few questions: Does Lisa have a the reputation of being a shy bearer? How long does it take before the fruit turn completely pink? here are pics of some fruits with shades of pink.

« on: September 08, 2012, 12:17:44 AM »
I've had about 12 mangos drop this week. The Glenn's are delicious but I've been surprise on how much the Ataufo's have improved in taste. Last week I found a cluster of Corriente mangos inside the canopy, I forgot about these.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Follow up on my multi-graft experiment
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:34:25 PM »

Here are pics of my grafts that I preformed on April to my 2 mature grafted cherimoya tress, One is a Pierce and the other a Booth. Initially I had 17 grafts and later in the month I added 26. I had 20 take but the tress are growing and branching out of control. Some of the grafts that took were smothered by the new growth. I'm not too happy with the results. I will never performed multi-grafts a cherimoyas.

the leaves fell off this one but it keeps flowering

this one being smother I don't know if it will survive,

sugar apples are slower and hanging on.
