Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Thai Jumbo Perfume Wax Jambu?
« on: January 04, 2017, 10:32:30 PM »
Most green Wax Jambu that I have tried in California are rather bland.  The green Wax Jambu I have tried in Thailand are pretty good, but I still like the red/pink varieties better.  I tried the Perfume Wax Jambu at Ong's in San Diego and I was at first very skeptical. The taste was pretty good, firm, not mealy, sweet and had that rose water taste I like in the red/pink varieties.  I haven't tried dozens of Wax Jambu, so I am no expert, but I still like the Black Pearl variety.  For me it has more of that rose water taste and is nice, crisp, and sweet.
What color was the fruit? It is good green....try again with only fruits from  summer crop and eat only the perfume that's ALL white.

You into green? Don't buy Tun Klao/unknown green jambus at nurseries in oc/la.  :). Waste of space.

Mangcau,

Is that your green wax Jambu? It has a lot of fruit. I bough one . The nursery man told me it was Thai long green wax Jambu. Last winter, the main trunk died down to 3/4 of the tree. This year I has bushy bottom, but still no flower. I really upset because I spent more than 300 to buy that damn tree and still no sign of flower the past two year. I hope it survives this winter .

That's my neighbor's green in his front yard. No one care to stop for fruits. When they say Thai green.....it means unknown. Must be a big tree for 300.

Dragon-It is sweet not sour. I tried to root cuttings like the link below. Yes, I'm Vietnamese.

I read and followed  the branch cutting propergation in this website , but always failed. I am suck. I remembered eating green wax jambu in Vietnam when I was back there. It was sweeter than any red jambu I used to eat. I did not know the variety, but called it "mận xanh". Now in US, I'v tried to look for it, but there are many varieties . I have no idea, so I just look for whatever wax jambu that tastes sweet rather than sour or  taseless.

Is it sweet, Mangcau? Does it have seed? I ask because I would like to grow one if you have seed or scion  to sell? I have a rose appe, I think about grafting the scion to it. However, I am just beginner grafter, so I ask for seed too just in case my grafting not taking .
Now is not food.I can send you free sticks in march. I think you can root or graft. I failed miserably. It is not sugar sweet and can be seedy.

« on: January 02, 2017, 07:49:44 PM »
"Atemoyas" are "Annona hybrids" of Annona Squamosa with Annona Cherimola.   When you mix in ilama or reticulata, the resulting plants and fruits are other types of "Annona hybrids", and these should not be called "atemoyas."

There actually are Annona hybrids that are part reticulata that are absolutely delicious, but 47---18 is usually tastless (at least under the growing conditions in which I had it), with a tough rubbery gritty texture, and with a soft bruisable skin.  The two very substantial positives are high productivity without hand-pollination, even in poor growing conditions;  and the gorgeous skin color.
I know you guys will jump on me for this...but I like rubbery chewy texture. ;D. It is the main reason why I dislike most cherimoya. A chewy fragnance/smooth/no grit fruit is heaven.

Hello Xue...the original plant came from my father in law. This particular one is outstanding. The leavers are round like mimosa, sun shine nursery's seedless but not the same taste.

I think as soon as A.reticulata genes come in the flavour and quality diminish.I have seen atemoyas that are reddish and from memory Maroochy gold is red brown quite often.I have also seen a few seedling brumby atemoyas with some red on the skin. Getting red skin and the great taste of top atemoyas is the challenge rather than some bland gefner tasting one.

Mike is absolutely correct. You do not want to contaminate any great tasting anona with a.reticulata.....people want to know the taste of 47-18 it's grainy and it taste like arm& hammer

I'm sorry...but I have a serious addiction. I still want it! I'll be bugging you soon Frank. :)

I understand but you are going to have to wait for our cross above lol
I can't wait! I know you and Thera definitely knows what you doing.

I was thinking it was desirable because it's got genetics from 3 species all in one plant, and of course the red skin.

But the flavor to me was not sweet enough, and the texture was just barely mealy...really did remind me of a bland geffner, with more mealy pasty pulp, and traces of custard Apple flavor.

Well yeah, the genetics from 3 are there, but without specific traits displayed that you're after I don't know that I'd use it as a starting point for breeding. For intentional plant breeding I thought the two main approaches were:
1) Pick just one trait (say red skin) you were after and breed a plant that shows that trait with another one that's just generally top notch and may or may not have that trait. Then from the seedlings select individuals that show that trait and are the best overall for other qualities, and use them for further breeding to stabilize that trait you're after.
2) Breed exceptional individual plants together and see what you get.

Outside of red skin I don't know that 47-18 has any exceptional traits that would make it a starting point candidate for further breeding.

I do think given the lackluster taste quality combined with beautiful appearance, it might make a good candidate to graft on to front yard atemoya trees so fruit thieves steal it instead of the good stuff. You know, just graft one branch to 47-18 so they see the bright red fruit before the good stuff that's still green and camouflaged.
That is exactly what I did with my papayas. I planted a few bar soap  babacos  for the  thieves. I'm planning to do the same with 47-18.

Thanks Mike. I will ask Frankie again when I'm there. I have one seedling left from Oscar's camito. It is almost three years old and barely a foot tall.

A kind friend shared scions with me of Petch Pakchong and Nuathong but unfortunately the labeling was lost.  Can you guys help me put a name to these plants?

The first one grows with more of a bushy habit the leaves are thinner and more pointed. (I added the fly for size comparison)

The other has large rounded leaves and is growing upright like a tree.

Here are the two side by side.

Thank you!

Hello Ethan,
Any update on the rounded?

I bred the 47---18, and I agree that the taste is not desireable, and the texture isn't either.  Also, it is not an "atemoya."  It is an "Annona hybrid", or "Temoylata."
Har,
First and foremost, Thank you for the creation of this beautiful fruit.  Can you tell me more about taste and texture? Why is it not desirable for you?

lol. I wanted 47-18 so bad that I purchased seeds last year. My babies are growing nicely.

U have pics of seedlings??

It would be fun to observe the variation

Never know what kind of hybridization might have gone on...could have been pollinated by another annona (if was from me
The seeds came from the eBay seller above. I recieved scions and jabo seeds from you Adam. The 47-18 grafts rotted.

Can anyone tell me how big of a root system dragon fruits have?  I have a nice hillside Im thinking of putting some raised beds on and doing dragon fruit in them but there are spectic leach lines there.  Is it a shallow root system or is that asking for trouble?

Nowadays....I collect whatever Annonas that is not in my collection.
If you like Na. This one is very close in taste or even better imo. An atemoya crossed to a squamosa.
