Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WANTED: Miracle fruit seeds

It does not do the magic for my taste buds.  But my kids swear it works.  Go figure.

They are winning the war in my yard.  Wish lizards developed taste for them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air layered lychee branch flowering
« on: March 17, 2015, 07:37:21 PM »
I have a very young emperor lychee tree that i did not expect fruit for few more years.  Back in January, i was going to prune a low branch that was almost touching ground and instead decided to air layer it.  Fast forward two months and that branch and only that branch shows flower buds.  Wonders of nature.  Probably survival instinct of that branch kicked in.

Ignorance is not a sin.  Let them / us grow seedling as wished :-). Not for sale or deception.

But i sure highly appreciate what you / professionals do in improving quality of fruit with proper breeding, selection, and propagation.  You guys rock !

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Aphids on Guanabana (Soursop) Tree
« on: January 13, 2015, 09:40:28 PM »
Seems to be just a matter that of luck for the tree.  My guanabana has no aphids at all but jakfruit is loadd with them everywhere i look, plus a zoo of other insects.  I occasinally spray it with home defence insect spray frome home depot.  Have considered getting rid of the tree but the problem will likely migrate to other trees, so i keep it as a bait in effect.

The real problem is ants under the ground, they farm the aphids.  Using ground insect spray in and around trees and containers keeps the in check, but ants truly own the land here.

Oh,and i tried tanglefoot - google it for details - and ants are able to create pathways over it, continuing to farm aphids regardless.  Also tried ladybugs against aphids.  The root of the problem is ants.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Highest yielding fruit trees?
« on: January 13, 2015, 12:05:07 PM »
Why not mix it up between various recommendations given here.  This seems like a long term investment in the community.  A mix will spread risk and will guarantee that you have many winners.  This also also cater to everybody's tastes.  Avocado, Mango, Banana, Black Sapote, Carambola, Canistel, Persimmon, etc.

Slightly off topic, but reading that Carambola is a heavy bearer, I get disappointed in my grafted Sri Kembangan tree.  It has been in ground for almost 2 years and is quite large and otherwise healthy, but zero production.  If no fruit this year, I will likely top work into other varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jabo or Longan?
« on: January 07, 2015, 12:59:33 PM »
Taste- wise, i also prefer  and recommend Longan over Jaboticaba.  Though if space is the deciding factor, then Longan grows big and may not even be an option for you.

Question back to forum members: is Super Lisa much different from just Lisa and if so what is so super about it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tanglefoot for Squirrel Control
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:30:33 PM »
Just reporting that brown paper bags did not help on my papayas.  squirrels just tear them apart and dig into the fruit.  This forces me to harvest the fruit before they are ripe.  They also break through nylon fibre jewelry bags i put on figs.  Running out of humane options and patience with the fluffy tailed rodents.

Congratullations on the harvest, looks beautiful.
The fruit already look ripe to me, light coloring between sections.

"... fruit farm anywhere in the world" is way too broad, not sure anybody can help with this.  Try to narrow down, e.g. tropical, 10-20 acres, price range, looking for land or a farm as a business, preferred part of the world, etc.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bugs on Jak
« on: December 13, 2014, 09:17:32 AM »

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pug a mamey sapote
« on: December 11, 2014, 04:07:14 PM »
I should have mentioned that I left few leaves for safety when I cut the top off, i.e. cut above few leaves.  Did not try to completely decapitate to a bare stump as one would with mango when pugging.  Perhaps others could chime on their experiences too.

I have read that with periodic pruning you can keep it to around 12 feet tall, so I tipped mine at about two feet from ground, which induced four branches, then tipped those at 1.5 ft or so, each producing two or three branches.  The tree has not fruited yet, it looks happy and I see two flowers developing on the thickest part of the trunk.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Papaya relatives, whose growing them?
« on: December 03, 2014, 10:03:26 PM »
Here is an "Oak leaf" papaya next to a "Red lady", small fruit and pretty tasty.

Wow, is this for real ?  How big is the oak leaf plant itself ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Beginner questions
« on: December 03, 2014, 06:19:19 PM »
Thanks bsbullie, savemejebus, from the sea

Looks like i better cut off those mamey flowers to let the tree grow more.  Not sure what variety it is, bought it from Patrick in summer of 2013, a very healthy and pretty tree, but do not remember variety.

Will let papaya and loquat do their thing.

How about atemoya ?  Should i cut off the undeveloped fruit this time of the year to let it preserve energy ?

42
Great topic, i would also love to have a dwarf caimito.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beginner questions
« on: December 03, 2014, 04:11:05 PM »
My small Mamey tree seems to be developing flowers right at the graft and this time of the year.  Is this normal ?  Will i get a fruit ?  Seems unrealistic for this small tree.

Another small one, Loquat in acontainer is blooming.  Is this normal this time of the year ?  I am in south Palm Beach county in Florida.

This tr hovey papaya tree was planted a year ago and already has many fruits, but all are green, none  turned orange yet.  Some  of the fruit are larger than honeydew mellons, i have not seen such big papayas in stores.  How long does it take for one to ripen ?  Should i let it do its thing or try to induce ripening ?

This atemoya is already losing leaves for hybernation but has one egg-sized fruit i really want to see ripen.  Is it a lost cause or will it ripen in spring ?  Should i just cut it off to let it preserve energy for a better crop next year ?  This is also a small tree, planted in ground few months ago.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sri Lankan Weevil = No Lychee?
« on: November 17, 2014, 12:46:41 PM »
I kill anywhere from a dozen to few dozen weevils a day in my tiny yard.  They love to chew on lychee, plum, acerola.  Somewhat less but still eat mamey, loquat, miracle fruit leaves.  Their favorite seems to be plum leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Are any of your trees dormant yet?
« on: November 17, 2014, 12:41:00 PM »
Atemoya, sugar apple, persimmon going dormant.
The rest seem to continue growing but slower.

To my surprise, loquat is blooming.

It looks like Xcalibur has only Ruby X Supreme.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 2014 Guavas
« on: November 05, 2014, 03:47:30 PM »
Any recommendation for seedless guava or one with soft or very small seeds ?  I like to be able to each it fresh without breaking my teeth...

48
Now I have to try durian.  Thanks for the definitive description - awesome/terrible    ???  ;)

Thanks Dangermouse01,
I found quite a few little frogs on leaves of other trees too, may be an inch or two in length.  Does this sound like cuban tree frogs ?  They seem to be harmless to the trees as much as I can tell.  The weevils are eating up leaves.

50
Couple of unrelated questions about problems.

These little white beetles have devastating my plum tree leaves and now starting on lychee, acerola, loquat trees.  I have killed well above 100 of them on just on one small plum tree.  They are the size of a large rice grain, sometimes larger, and give a cracking noise when crushed.  Any advice for keeping them away ?

Another question is about an atemoya tree that i planted in ground two months ago.  It ges full sun and plenty of water with the daily showers.  I fertilized using regular fruit fertilizer a month ago and also added some ironite.  But leaves do not look healthy.  Any advice would be much appreciated.

It does have one marble size fruit developing, this after me playing a matchmaker using a paintbrush for days and attempting on few dozen flowers.
