Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inexpensive automatic feeder
« on: August 25, 2015, 06:50:49 PM »
Miracle grow auto feeder for hose bib works perfect and is very cheap around $15 for the kit and first bottle of fertilizer.
I suggest not using the miracle grow fertilizer, but may be spread over grass to empty the bottle if you want to cut the bottom off and reuse as holding container. Get 3 or 4 feet of 1/4" tubing and connect feeder to your holding container. That's it! $15 for auto fertilizer injector, and it works flawlessly and simple.
Another discovery this year is container soil mix of Kellogg cactus mix and coco choir, 50/50 mix. Really easy and Mango trees seem to prefer over gritty mix or any other bag soils. They really grow a lot faster than ever before.

I saw a little tiny mango tree with tag of JAK/77. Anyone have a guess as to what this is?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / venus mango

Came across this mango tree the other day....a Venus Mango. Looks to be fairly bushy somewhat compact grower.
What is the parentage of this variety and what is the flavor?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango leaf removal for increased branching
« on: February 12, 2015, 12:56:58 PM »
Why is there so much info on tip pruning information but very little to nothing about removing leaves as way to accomplish increased branching?  Here is AZ I have found the easiest way to generate bushiness in Mango trees has been to remove the leaves off sections of mango branches. From what I can tell of a number of different varieties, the branches with leaves removed are all now branching. Had an alphonso stick with hardly any leaves remaining...generated 10 branches at those nodes where leaves were. Noticing this on pretty much everything. This approach has been far more successful for me than tip pruning, as this just generates ugly crooked branch, at least in younger mango trees.
Did this with most all of my mango trees now and results have been consistent for all of them. It works.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Finally, eating Maha Chanok!
« on: July 21, 2014, 01:40:05 PM »
After reading all of the various threads about Maha Chanok and just how great it is, I managed to purchase a couple trees a while back, and now it was time to eat for first time. With all the mango reviews and comments, nobody ever writes what they found the flavor to taste like, so here goes:
Out of over 30 varieties I have Maha Chanok bolted to the top of the list for taste. The taste was almost like an infusion of flavors from a perfectly ripe honeydew melon and a perfectly ripe cantaloupe, with a tiny dash of peach-mango taste. The flavor was full with lots of body. Even though it was incredibly juicy there was no watery taste at all. The best fruit in the world so far, to my taste buds.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pencil caliper 3 gal from Top Tropicals
« on: June 11, 2014, 07:54:02 PM »
Just have to warn you all today I received my third order this year from Top Tropicals and I have to say the last 2 were a total ripoff. Today I received 4 trees, Maha Chanok, hoa loc, and tog bi con, all 4 supposedly 3 gallon trees but all fit easily and belong in 1 gallon containers.  The Maha Chanok was $79 plus $35 shipping and will have a tough time making it as all the leaves look like they were in the sun too long and not watered enough, trunk is wrinkly at top 1/2 of tree. So for $320 I go 4 pencil sized 2 foot mango trees, and the most expensive one has 50/50 chance of making it. The last order was for 2 of their 7 gallon trees and neither had woody branches, only green ones and all fresh new growth, and easily fit into 3 gallon pots, definitely not 7 gallon trees.
Am I the only one who expects a 3 gallon or 7 gallon root ball when I pay for one that size? Is this unreasonable to expect from a nursery?
Oh and when I called to complain today, the toll free number along with another number on the contact page was out of service. Luckily there was one number that still worked. I spoke with Kristi, who is very nice, so we will see what they do to rectify the situation.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / phyto fos
« on: May 27, 2014, 12:18:42 AM »
Where can I find Phyto Fos online in something less than a 2.5 gal jug for $150? I would rather purchase something more like a quart or a gallon at most.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Beverly Mango
« on: January 01, 2014, 11:13:51 PM »
I notice that Beverly is seedling of Cushman. How close is flavor of Beverly to Cushman. Is it safe to consider Beverly as an improved Cushman?
