Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Mulberry Thread.

Tried  2 more Mulberries  yesterday... Both of them were Morus Albas.... "Persian White" and "White Pakistan" or White Shatoot.

White Persian is a  terrible bland tasting berry.....Meanwhile the White Pakistan is a popping incredibly crisp vanilla sweet berry...Ultra sweet...Probably should have bought it instead of the Dark Pakistan...

Can anyone comment on the different Morus Nigras out there? Black Beauty, Noir de spain, Black Persian?

I have a weeping, a Pakistan, and a Persian, not sure the latin names, but all are fairly common in so cal nurseries.  I would rate them in that order as well with Persian being the best.  I'm debating getting a white one, Papaya tree nursery claims to have one with great flavor.

The Pakistan has an incredible almost Rasperry sweetness to me, The Weeping Mulberry is one of the most bland tasting fruits I have ever tried....Can't wait to try one of the Nigras!!!!!   I ordered a special White Vareity Mulberry from Whitmans Farm that Lucille doesn't have listed on her Website, she says it's her best so i'll find out in a couple of years.

I have morus nigra, and black beauty which is a named variety of nigra. Both are amazing. The nigras have the perfect balance of acidity to offset the sweet. But its all about timing. I gorge myself in the last 2 weeks prior to them getting fully ripe, because they lose their tartness at the end of the season (which is too damed short). Nigra in my experiece ripen all all once so theres more fruit on one 10 ft tree then anyone can eat.... then you are waiting a year for the next opportunity to pig out.  I usually graze heavily for a couple weeks and make a few pies to share. Then... they're gone..  *sniff.. sob*

Finally...someone who has tasted some of the Morus Nigra Varieties!!!! This is exactly what I came here for... Thank you kind Sir!

I want to try more variaties, but I just made a mulberry pie from a potted mulberry
label Thai from excaliber. A fast growing tree. It was as good as any I had when I was
a kid in Palm Beach in the 1940s

I'm the same way! I have only had the dark colored Pakistan, which had an incredible ultrasweet Rasberry Flavor without the horrible Rasberry seeds... Will definitely be buying an Improved Cookes selection Pakistan from LE Cookes... But I'm stoked about the Noir De Spain I just ordered more than anything... According to some people, they consider the Morus Albas bland or just sweet tasting to some of the Nigras such as Black Persian...well I fell in love with the Morus Alba Pakistan...I can only imagine what Persian or Noir De Spain taste like which is supposedly packed with sweetness and acidity which all the Albas lack.

Green Pak isn't the same as Green Aussie.

I already had the Pak and when my Aussie arrived they look very different.  Will hopefully get to see the fruit differences within a year from my home grown.  Although I've eaten them from other sources and they both taste very different.

Which one tastes better?

Morus Nigra...terrible labeling that seems to also cause tremendous confusion....In most cases "I think" Morus Nigra classifies Mulberries into the dark colored Mulberry category such as the Black Persian, Black beauty, and Noir De Spain...all Morus Nigras. The ones you linked dont really fall under the others as they are not dwarfs... Black Persian and Noir De Spain reach up 30-40ft, Black Beauty is the most Dwarfish coming in at 15-20 ft.... but again I believe Morus Nigra is just classifying them as dark Berries....same as Morus Alba's being white.

A link to some of the varietites out there.

I did some reaearch.

The variety of green mulberry that is "all the rage" in flavor is the "Australian."

It is green/white, tastes like honey dew melon, very large/long berries, and very rare and hard to find.

Of course, I found one and it is in order.  ;)

I believe this is also known as the "White Pakistan" or "King Shatoot" from other reports....seems like there is a ton of mislabeling and renaming in the Mulberry varieties especially from different regions... From the reports I've read, The red Pakistan or "Himalayan", especially LE Cookes Select Pakistan is much better than the Green/White Pakistan...

I'm hunting for the Cookes Pakistan but have only found large size trees locally... Number one on my list is Morus Nigras which are held by many of the Mulberry Gurus as the most explosive in Flavor with incredible sweetness plus acidity to match... Noir De Spain from Whitmans Nursery (I love Lucille) is going to be mine!!!

I just ate my first Mulberry last weekend. It was a long 3 inch Pakistan Berry.... Dear God this fruit is amazing with perfect sweetnss. literally Wipes the floor with the berry family...Blueberries, blackberries, Raspberries...easily! This fruit is easily a top 10 fruit and possibly a tie for top 5!!!!

It seems Mulberries are underated or just aren't well known throughout the U.S. like other good fruit out there. Can anyone give their top 5 Mulberries please? I hear the Morus Nigra's are the best varities becuase they pack a super punch of sweetness and acidity? I'm currently looking to purchase Pakistan, Black beauty, Persian, and Noir de Spain...and end up doing a Cocktail tree for all these varieties since they can get big.

good luck with your peaches ClayMango!! The ones I have are the Belle of Georgia peach (that's flowering/fruiting a lot this year too) and the Red Haven peach..how does your varieties taste? Is the Barron peach a white or red peach? My dad has a Saturn (donut) peach too and it fruits almost every year.. He doesn't take care of it much so probably that's why not every year.. Oh, which of your cherimoyas didn't make it through the winter? I thought you had protected all of them already in your other post.. or were those only the mangos?

Careful, do not confuse the Donut Saturn with the regular Saturn...2 Different varieties.

Red Baron and Saturn are both yellow/ Red peaches with some blush. very juice and tasty.

Got some seedless mandarins sold as cuties.  They are good.  Upon researching, they appear to be either clementine or murcott.  I was under the impression that the murcott/honey mandarin was the honey sweet, round, seedy fruits I inhale 3 at a time all winter.  Are the cuties in the market today murcotts?

Thanks
I have the California Honey, Gold Nugget, Tango (seedless murcott Honey), and Kishu ( sweeter and smller than cuties)....

That tree will be replaced by a mango, lychee, paw paw, or Fig.

How does this answer Jeff's question?

I have seen satsumas and murcotts sold under Cuties.  I have a feeling the use the best available product to be sold under the label at that time.  With that said, not sure if Honey Sweet is the same as Murcott/Honey Murcott.   I have a really good publication that should be able to answer this but its at work.

Generally in California, cuties are composed of mainly the "Clementine", then the Tango and murcott depending on the season.
