Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Peaches breaking buds and blooming
« on: February 11, 2014, 08:50:03 PM »
JF here is my Saturn Peach tree showing off it's sexy double Blossoms. I bought it last year as a 3 gallon. I hacked off every limb except the top portion so I can get the 3-4 scaffold limbs started for proper bowl structure of a peach tree. Cant wait till this thing reaches 20 ft height n spread combined with the 2 Red Barrons on each side to give a nice show on my side yard.

Also Here is my Cherry tree that has been blooming on and off for the last month or so. Anyone no what variety this is?

Gary,

You might want to go ahead and Pot that Pickering or relocate it like you suggested.... Here is a picture from Top Tropical's 10 year old Pickering....Yeah lol http://toptropicals.com/pics/garden/11/olymp/6/P6156565.jpg

After Making some sacrifices in the yard, I've come up with 15 foot spacing for an avacodo tree, and a 10 ft spacing for a  cherimoya.

Will be going to a grower in Temecula selling these 4-6ft grafted varieities of Avacodos for "10 BUCKS!!!!!" I can literally eat a a whole sliced HASS lightly salted daily for breakfast, lunch, and a midnight snack....God I love a Hass...However i haven't tryed the Lamb Hass and Reed. I've tryed several other varieities and they were extreemly watery...I think I'm going with the old California Hass. It's a perfect size fruit for one serving as well.

All this to talk about flowering and budding....breaks my heart :'(

I hope when my my trees arrive from T.T. from their cross country journey of 5-6 days, that they will be in great condition and not half dead... The Japanese Maples I had shipped to me last year arrived completley Dormant...Hopefully thats not the case here....I want at least 1 mango off of one these 7g trees this year!!!!

Warren,

Not trying to bust any ones business. But PIN shipping rate and pricing to California is Ludicrous

" due to the strict regulations imposed by California we charge an additional 50% of the plant cost as a California Compliance Fee. We also charge $55 for the phytosanitary certificate which is a flat fee for a State DPI inspection no matter the quantity of plants. For commercial orders the phytosanitary fee is $75 and the 50% California Compliance Fee and other restrictions do apply"

they only ship 3 gallons via fedex as well... I just purchased  a 3g LZ, 3g Coconut Cream, 7g Sweet tart, 3g Pina Colada, 7g Nam Doc Mai, 7g Edward, 7g Carrie, and a 7g Malika from Top Tropicals at about ahlf the price PIN would have charged, And I don't even see any of the new designer Zill varieties listed on their page.

This is a no brainer.

Too bad this wasnt on a Weekend...i could never steal away a Friday, unless it was Federal Holiday.

Gary so happy that you are on these boards and congratulations , i have a feeling this will be your most productive year ever.
You help me so much . I'm also in the desert but with heavy heavy clay soi unlike your sandyl ( my house is built on an area they grew and still do grow cotton / corn / citrus/ veges etc.

So far i gather that the fastest growing at your place and climate which is very similar to mine in Tolleson (lower desert ) is :

(1) Manila (2) Keitt ( 3) Lemon Zest ... any close 2nds from your observations ?

Thanks and i am totally happy for you !

Mango Maniac..How well does your trees perform in the Heavy Clay??? I have something very similar out here in Temecula.

However i have multiple trees thriving including a huge 15 ft Santa Anna Plum and a 10 ft cherry tree no issues. My Mexican Lime is almost ever bearing consistent juice Limes...My Blood orange seems to be haveing issues... Not sure how my Mangos will fair once I get them in.

1260
Yep lol, But if you follow that street down the side yard i showed you on my property..... in about 100 feet you hit the Temecula city sign right at the start of the Cul de sac..

No one knows Murrieta, most seem to have heard of Wine Country Temecula....so I just say Temecula

1261
All of my tree locations are at the South end of my property...Not sure how the Edward and Nam Doc Mai will fair at the Inlaws...Their weather in San Diego doesnt get Hot like it does out here the Dessert/ Valley area of Temecula...

Has anyone produced a decent mango out of San Diego? She lives near the Lemon Grove area?

1262
I updated my order from Top Tropicals because they got some bigger sizes and I also added 2 new trees that will be going to my Mother in Laws because of space. new list**

LZ-3 gallon
Pina Colada- 3 gallon
Coconut Cream -3 gallon
Sweet tart- ***upgraded to 7 gallon
Carrie- 7 gallon
Malika- ***Upgraded 7 gallon

New Comers thanks to Mango Fang and JF
***Nam Doc Mai- 7 gallon going to Moms Dukes
***The Infamous Edward- 7 gallon

Shipment set to arrive 8th of February because of I'm shipping out for a couple of weeks this month in the Navy... In the mean time... I will be composting the crap out of this Clay and mixing lots of organic goodies in the dirt for all my tree  locations..... Mango Gods of Middle earth... Please give me but just a few Mangos this year off My 7 Gallon Babies..Let me taste the greatness of the Sweet Tart and Carrie...That is all... Amen.

1263
thanks Gary,

Boy you sure seem to love that Nam Doc Mai...

1264
Gary,

How do you protect the trees from Frost once they reach a good size like many of your more mature trees?

1265
Is it just me? or did it feel like you just walked through a Mango Rain Forest?

the comments of the LZ is what made me put this tree on my number 1 list of the trees i purchased yesterday at Top Tropicals...

"Soul smashing"  I love the feedback that yall bring to the forums....please keep it coming for the mango noobs such as myself.

1271
Ahhh Yeahh... I can remember all 20 years growing up in Central Florida before I joined the Navy...

Daily afternoon Showers

Muggy Humidity that will make you feel likes its 90 degrees at night

Those bloodsuckers that come out after dusk with DEET and every other chemical repellant being useless besides causing cancer lol

Patrick we will take your Rain dancer on a weekend basis only....and you can keep everything else lol.

1272
I hope we get more this weekend as well.... I planted about 10 Hybrid Tea roses, 5 Floribundas, 3 grandifloras, and 8 Standard tree roses of differerent varieties that all could use a heavy soaking....Not to mention almost every Fruit tree i have is ether budding or blossoming and could also use some water besides whats coming from my poorly set up irrigation system.

1273
Finally we got some rain in Southern California... We need more!!! Not sure how many inches we got last night....but I'll take anything at this point.

1274
Will do Gary,

I have T.T. set to ship them out at the end of Feb. Partly because i will be out to sea early Feb for 3 weeks for ship qualifications ,  also I dont trust my wife to correctly Pot my babies with the perfect amount of Kellogs Compost, Peat, and Organic Soil lol. I definately dont trust her to garage them if we hit a cold spike during February lol

Well I'm guessing 2-3 years before i get some ok fruit from these young 3 gallon trees.... Carrie was the only 7 gallon they had.... Hopefully i get to taste that Unique piney sweet flavor that i keep hearing about soon!

1275
Zands,

I believe your mango review of the Carrie on possibly another thread contributed to the numerous Mango reviews I have scoured through from Tropical Fruit Forum and Garden Web.
