Tropical Fruit Discussion / 10-30 Ruby Supreme Guava.
« on: January 16, 2012, 05:30:05 PM »
I've been reading-up on guava cultivars and I found one that was supposedly sweet with no or very little tartness and most importantly "worm proof". My mom loves guava and so do I.  But what kept me from growing one was the fact that they tend to get worms due to the Caribbean fruit fly.  From what I've read, the 10-30 ruby supreme guava has a thicker skin, which prohibits the fruit fly from penetrating it and laying it's eggs, which turns into larvae (worms).

I would appreciate if anybody can express their personal experience with this type of guava. I would like to get more opinions on this fruit.

Thank you.

I'm a Biology major student at Broward College(planning on becoming an Optometrist).  I have two hobbies.
The first one is growing tropical fruits. I've always had a deep passion for tropical fruit trees since I was a toddler.

I'm also a Ford guy, which leads me to my second hobby. I have lots of knowledge about ford mustangs, especially for years ranging 1979-1993.
I also like classic muscle cars whether it's a chevy, chrysler, ford, pontiac, etc...

They are not the same. The 27-1 was originally LZ then it was changed to OS then changed back to LZ. The current OS is a seedling from the same batch that the LZ came from. The confusion as to them being the same had to do with Zill's leaving OS written on the pots of the LZ. I think they may have also lefts some tags.

ohhhh ok. Thanks for clearing it up.

ummm. I thought orange sherbet and lemon zest were the same. They look kinda different from each other.

Let the lemon zest vs orange sherbet debate begin!   ;D

Welcome Harry!

My forecast low temp last week was 36 degrees. It was also windy. Most of the leaves of my soursop fell-off, and some of the leaves of my mamey got slightly burnt.  All of my mangoes were untouched, including the coconut cream mango. That same evening, before the temps fell, I had the sprinklers on for an hour.

oh ok. I see what you mean now about the regrouping part. That part is unclear.

1615
"Researchers at CIRAD noted that they did not find the Julie mango in Réunion even after testing dozens of mangos there but even though they are clearly different, they share enough alleles to regroup with their set of markers. I am not exactly clear on what that means."

Alleles and markers have to do with Genetics.  Julie is probably a "seed" from Reunion island that was a sexual cross between two types of mangoes on Reunion. What I'm thinking is that the original Julie is technically from Reunion, but grown somewhere else. In that case, Reunion island won't have an actual Julie tree.
That's how I understood their research comments based on sharing alleles and regrouping them (Genetic code).

I voted mango flavor, but honestly I also care about the disease resistance. Size starts to matter when you start to run out of space or have a small yard.
