Daintree, I'm glad to hear that it actually works.  I'll have to find a fruit at the market to try this out now.

Thanks for the tip.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pomegranate - new way to peel?

I know this isn't a tropical fruit, but has anyone tried opening a pomegranate like this before?  It's pretty amazing, considering how much work it is to typically open and consume.

Sorry... not sure how to embed this video here.

Thank you as well George, for the nice and healthy scions. It took me two evenings to graft them all, but they're all done.  ;D

Rtreid is correct.  I couldn't really get the correct color off of my camera phone yesterday, even with outdoor sunlight.  It is more of a dark magenta in color.  Small but tasty.

Simon,

The bottom fruit is an 8-S, which is one of Paul Thompson's hybrids

Below is 8-S cut open (bottom fruit)

Houghton (One of the parents of 8-S) next to 8-S.  As you can see, it's very similar.

Tim,

It's personal sized... that way you don't have to share.   ;)

I wonder if anyone of us outside of Sven or Leo have experienced this variety?

I got mine from Leo a few years ago and had my first bloom this year.  I had a fruit growing and developing, but a last month it just turned yellow and fell off.  :'(  It's a very small fruit and supposed to be delicious.  I hope to have it flower and have better luck next year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: why do dragon fruit crack?
« on: September 16, 2013, 12:14:15 AM »
Hi Steve,

I've never seen a fruit split that badly before.  A typical crack would be 1/4" or less.  A fruit often splits because it gets too much water and the skin can only expand so much.  The longer you leave a fruit to ripen will also likely split.  Some varieties are more prone to split as well.  How long do you leave the fruit after it fully flushes red?

As for soft brown spots, it is likely bacterial or fungal in nature.  The humidity likely makes it worse.

Thank you MarinFla.  Good luck on your little seedlings.

xshen,

I used a cleft graft and bagged the grafted branch.

Where did you source your tree?

Congrats on your fruit set,and glad to see the shape is similar.  My biggest fruit last season was just over a pound - definitely not huge, but bigger than any of the sugar apples and atemoyas I found in Brazil.  The flavor on the best fruit was perfect - sweet, but not overly so and plenty of complexity.  However, I managed to pick one early and never got it to ripen properly - it wasn't edible.

I got mine last year at the Fullerton Arboretum Green Scene, CRFG booth.  I had read somewhere that it wasn't a popular commercial variety in Spain as the fruit is too large in comparison to Fino, as smaller fruits are easier to sell when buying by the weight.  Glad to hear that they are good tasting.

Thank you Thera and Scott.  It's in large 20 or 25 gallon pot.  I'm still debating whether to put it in the ground or not.  Best of luck on your grafts Scott.

Thank you Adam and PltdWorld!  It hasn't leafed out still... just a stick.  I assume it's still alive  :-\.  The rootstock was also a small leafed Sabara that has yet to flower on it's own.  I was determined to get it to fruit one way or another.  ;D

Here's my first attempt at grafting Sabara Jaboticaba.  Below are photos of the progression over 4 months time.  I guess it turned out pretty good.   ::)

Hi PltdWorld,

My Campas looks very much like yours when young:

This will be my first fruit from my small tree.  Hopefully I will get to try a mature fruit this year.  How is the taste and what is the average weight of the fruit?  It supposed to be a very large fruit.

Thank you Rodney.  Very useful information.  How much compost do you use in the nylon stocking?

Excellent worm composting tutorial Rodney!  I have a worm bin, but I haven't done a whole lot with it other than keep feeding the worms and adding more bedding.  I have't really harvested any of the compost.  What I really want to learn is your vermicompost tea regimine and process.  I made a tea brewer a few years back for regular compost, but haven't used it for quite a while and would like to hear some of your tips.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Geffner or African Pride Atemoya?
« on: May 19, 2013, 04:02:07 PM »
Hi Gary,

I just harvested my last fruit about a week ago.  They all held on the tree over the winter from last year.  I suppose it just takes that long to ripen?  My atemoya is full of flowers right now as well.  Does it just ripen faster in Florida?  Glad to hear that Geffner is creamy and not chewy.  I'd like to try that one one day.

That looks delicious Harvey!  I wish had started off years ago with with a larger tree instead of a smaller one. :(  Still no flowers in sight for me.

The family and I were at the arboretum yesterday plenty of flowers and no ripe fruit yet.

Behl,

Please put me down for one perforated roll.

Thank you for the pix Mike.  It certainly doesn't look like we're even comparing the same fruit.  The African Pride in Australia seems like a completely different fruit than the ones here.  I wonder who has the real one.  There could have been a mix up here or over there as many of the African Prides here look very similar to mine it seems.

I think I'll keep the atemoya tree around in a pot, but I really enjoy cherimoya considerably more.  One day, I hope I'll get to try my own Rollina fruit.

Sorry to hear about that Adam.  The same thing happened to me last year in my mini greenhouse.  I got a Mexican Garcinia, Garcinia intermedia,  yellow grumichama, regular grumichama, and a cambuca all trimmed back to make a rat nest.  I was very satisfied to catch it in a trap.  The good news out of all this, I found that the yellow grumichama rooted quite easily by sticking it back in the soil.
