Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: taiwanese golden mango
« on: January 09, 2015, 09:35:38 PM »
The golden queen only turns yellow if they bag it.  In taiwan, it is bagged and harvested green then chemically ripened with ethylene gas.

Irwin produce well in my yard in cerritos and it is a smaller tree.  But if a tart flavor is what u are after u should try sweet tart or lemon zest

103
They fruit twice in southern california.  The variety i have is seedless though sometimes u can see tiny reminant of a seed (looks brown but have texture of the fruit)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How many mangos?
« on: January 01, 2015, 01:10:10 AM »
Got three from my 7 gallon pickering.  Another 4 from my maha.

Black pearl- sweet and juicy.  Got kind of sweet rose water taste with a refreshing taste.  About 2-3 inches tall per fruit and about 2 in in diameter at the bottom of the fruit.
Black diamond - much sweeter than than black pearl a bit bigger than black pearl but not significant.

Thai perfume- i grew this variety this past year.  I didnt thin the fruit and it grew the size of the black pearl.  Per the reports they get to the size of a fist if thinned.  Sweetness is about the same as black pearl for me.  Also much more fragrant than the black pearl which i am not sure if i like yet.

No idea about fortune mango.  Irwin and aewun is rhe same.  Taiwanese people cant pronounce the letter r.  There are many new mangos from taiwan but the most are not commercially viable.  In addition taiwanese favors red mango in general because of their preference for red fruits

They actually name in summer snow because of the skin color.  Pale yellow mango are not the norm in Taiwan.  They are used to red irwin mango.  So they named it summer snow because it has a pale white skin like snow but since mango is a summer fruit, they named it summer snow.

There is a taiwanese desert called shaved ice that sometimes is called snow flake ice.  They do put mango on it but the mango they put on it is irwin

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangoes start flower in December, anyone?
« on: December 23, 2014, 11:19:49 PM »
Mt mangos are flowering early.  My alampur and icecream flowered last month but the flower rotted in the storm.  Lemon zest is now flowering for me now and the rest are pushing buds for me

Yu wen is an improved irwin in Taiwan.  Its bigger than Irwin and taste similar.  It has red skin which is appealing to the taiwanese.  It has be be ripened off the tree though.  In taiwan they use chemical ripening.

Larger mangoes tend not to ripen well on trees evenly.  Golden queen mango in Taiwan has to be ripened chemically off the tree.  I think the same applies to Yuwen and red ivory.  The mango is decent but not top notch in my opinion.  There is minimal fiber and some pineapple taste to it.  I would say it's one of the better commercial mangos that I have tasted.

In taiwan there is a mini mango called farmers party #1.  The mango is the size of an egg and its quite sweet.  The tree is not a super dwarf though

There is a lychee called "gua lu" which literally means hung green in chinese.  The lychee is mostly green when mature and is actually quite tasty

Yes, these injection molded air pruning pots are quite expensive.  I am experimenting now with the smart pot fabric pots instead to see if they would achieve the same results.  They are a bit cheaper than either the rolls or injection molded air pots

I got some scions from taiwan for an apple mango (different from irwin.  They actually call it apple-win).  Will let u know once it gets to fruiting size (maybe 2-3 years since i live in california)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Must-have Loquats
« on: October 13, 2014, 09:57:12 PM »
I have a very vigorous but bad tasting loquat in the backyard and would love to top work it.  I have big jim and gold nugget tree.  What type of grafts do u recommend i do and what time of the year do u suggest to graft?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Container Mangos
« on: October 06, 2014, 02:39:16 AM »
Lemonzest is pretty vigorous for me so it might be tough to keep that in a container.  I had to move mine in ground this year.  Indian mangoes have to be ripen off the tree.  I usually pick them when they start turning a bit yellow-green then ripen them off the tree.

Other trees u might consider is fairchild and angie.  Both are supposed to be compact growers.  I dont have either of them so u will have to ask others who have it to see if they are good mangoes to have.

You might actually inspire me to mowe down those ugly cypress trees in my backyard and plant down my mangoes and cherimoyas.  I will have to wait till the weather get better before i start digging holes though

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Container Mangos
« on: October 05, 2014, 01:23:35 PM »
Mallika and Neelam are good choices.  I think ndm is only ok.  Splitting is a real big issue with this tree in containers.  With the rain u get in houston, may not be the best choice.  I also like irwin as a small container tree but it would require spraying in houston.  Maha Chanok will fruit in a container as well but mine have splitting problems this year as well.

Pickering did well for me this year.  I just wished the fruit would have been bigger :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seedless Lychee In Florida...??
« on: September 26, 2014, 10:47:28 PM »
There is supposedly a seedless variety in taiwan.  Maybe i should try to import one to california...

125
Because of space i would prefer multi graft trees.  However, based on my experience with multigraft peach/plums and pears, i would think one of them would eventually outgrow the other varieties.  I am going to start experimenting with top working mango varieties of similar vigor and size to see if the problem i have with peaches and pears hold true.
