Temperate Fruit Discussion / Cherry apple, the mother of all apples
« on: March 16, 2018, 03:22:57 PM »
Good day

Could someone please help me to identify this tree?  I searched the internet and found this website http://www.natureproducts.net/Crops/Apple.html.  Is it the same fruit and is there perhaps a botanical name so that I could search for more info?  I assume if it is the cherry apple, it is edible?  The one tree bears yellow fruit and the other tree bears dark red fruit.

Thank you for your replies.  The friend tasted the seeds.  She said it tastes exactly like raw peanuts.

I would suggest to cut a fruit if it is possible.  That way you might be able to see if it is ripe.  You can then post a photo of it for better identification.

The quickest way I’ve found to root cuttings is take a fresh cutting and dip in rooting hormone, then place in shade for a week or two to let it callous over. Then plant 4 inches deep in we’ll draining mediums, then tie a stake to the cutting, after that I place a clear plastic bag over it and place in warm shade or greenhouse. They root real quick that way.

How long will it take to fruit if you prepare and plant a cutting that way?

Hi guys
So, there was this program in South Africa on TV about a Dragon fruit farmer.  According to him, you have to take a cutting and let it lay to dry for two weeks before planting, otherwise the soil will pull the moisture out of the cutting.  If you do that - according to him - the cutting will fruit within 6 to 9 months.  What do you think about it?  Friends of mine are asking questions and I don't know what to answer them.

Here in South Africa, the prices for lettuce skyrocketed.  The one week it was about R10 a head.  This past week, it is R24 a head.

I got another photo from my friend.  It is of the whole fruit.  It looks like Coccinia sessilifolia, but what I cannot understand, is that her fruit is shiny, whereas the fruit where I live is not shiny at all and sometimes even have a whitish color to it as if it is sprayed with something.

Some friend has sent me the pictures, I don't have it myself.  She hasn't tasted it, but said that it smells sweet.

It is definitely not Coccinia sessilifolia.  That plant grows where I live and I know how it should look like.

Thank you for your help.  This is the second season we have fruit.  Last year the second batch of fruit was a little bit smaller than the first.  We had two batches of fruit.  This season it is pumping flowers and fruit like mad. ;D  Every second week or so there are new flowers.  One evening there was so many flowers open, that the bees smelled it.  They had a ball of a time!!  Later that night when we wanted to pollinate the flowers, there was absolutely no pollen for us to work with.  Well, they are all growing into beautiful fruit.  The fruit is white on the inside and the flower is also white/yellow.  Here are a few pictures.  Please let me know if you need any more photos.

Hi all.  What characteristics do I need to look for in my dragon fruit plant to determine what variety it is?  Or will someone be able to help me identify it if I post some pictures?  Thanks

Sorry for taking so long to reply.  I first went to take photos before I reply and I have been away from home.

John, you were asking about how safe it is.  Like every country in the world has crime, South Africa also has crime.  Nowhere in the world is completely safe.  In South Africa, like in the rest of the world, you get your dangerous areas and your relatively safe areas.  This town is one of the safe areas in South Africa.  It is peaceful here.

Here are some photos.

Ever dreamt of owning your own South African property, but don’t know where to start or where in South Africa?  Let me make it easier for you.  140 km away from the world-known Kruger National Park.  72 km from God’s Window.  130 km from Blyde River Canyon.   50 km from Pilgrim’s Rest.  95 km from Hoedspruit where there are many wildlife conservation farms.  82 km from Sabie where there are quite a few waterfalls.  Do I need to say more?  A small town, going by the name Ohrigstad, might just be your answer.  It is known as the gateway to the panorama route.  It is the northern part of the Drakensberg mountain range.  Your own little African paradise in the middle of all the hottest tourist spots, but still quiet enough for some me-time.  This is also a bird-watcher’s paradise with close to 100 bird species.  Here you can also harvest marula, stamvrug, sourplum, red ivory, wild medlar, raisinbush, various cacti and prickly pear in the area or buy some of them next to the road.  Hey, there might even be more fruit that I didn't think of right now.  Build your own dream vacation home on a stand with a great view.  2 stands are available, next to each other.  The sizes are 1662 m2 and 1716 m2 each.  Get a great value deal of $22 000(US) each.  If you buy both stands, a special price can be discussed.

It might be less than 3 years. 3 years is how long the guy told me it will take to fruit. I planted some seeds just now. Will see how it goes.

I met this guy who has these trees.  I will attach photos.  It is also male and female plants.  The seeds of the fruit resembles pawpaw / papaya seeds.  It fruits about 3 years after germination.  He calls it himalayan papaya or malay papaya.  If you taste the fruit in a certain way, it almost taste like papaya.  What is it really and what is the botanical name?  I would like to read more about it.
