Thanks to all for your replies.

Our cassabananas started growing very well and we were hoping they would start to flower.  We had 4 plants in 2 big pots.  Then we got a new puppy (boxer) and he decided that they will help him with his new teeth.  He chewed all the cassabananas off just above the ground.

When we plant our new cassabananas, we will have to make a plan so that he can't get to it.

Hi to all

I can't find anywhere info on how long it takes before a cassabanana has any flowers or starts fruiting.  Can someone help me on that?

Thanks

I will take some time tomorrow to find out the costs of courier.  Hopefully I will be surprised?

Stuart, did you start to use courier?  If yes, which company?

Luckily for me, I stay in a very small town.  We only have one guy and two women working at our post office.  Even when the strike was on, they were still there most of the days and friendly.  Our post office didn't show any signs of a strike, but they were unable to help due to the strike in the rest of the country.

Not a SA but why don't you use fedex or UPS instead if the post office sucks so bad?

Thanks for the advice.  I will find out with them if they can help me and what the price will be.  I just think it is going to cost a lot of money.  It was already expensive to post with the post office.

Hi to all

I know this is not a post to sell or trade any seeds, but I need to get the attention from all South Africans.

There is a big possibility that the post office is going to strike again.  They said that the last strike will look like a picnic.  Since August last year I haven't received any seeds that were posted to me.  Did you receive anything?

I want to post new seeds and requested other forum members to post seeds to me, but I am afraid that it won't reach either of us.

What is your opinion and what are you going to do in this situation?

Thank you

It is fine with me.  Send me a PM and I will reply.

I've sent you a PM already.  Regards

Fruitaddict have you tasted the stamvrug? Looks very interesting:)

It is really nice.  It is sweet and sometimes I will choose it over marula (at least it is easier to eat the pulp from the seed than the marula).  The skin has a milky latex like figs.  The pulp is pink close to the skin and whitish close to the seed.  I was only able to buy one small bag this year.  I think you will know the size of the bag if I compare it with the size of the bags they sell the marulas in.

I am looking for gac and cassabanana seeds.  The previous seeds that were sent to me got lost in the post with the South African Post Office strike.  I haven't received it yet.

I have fresh stamvrug seeds.  New and from previous season marula seeds.  I also have red ivory seeds.  Fruit is small but delicious.  Here is a link for more info on the red ivory:  http://www.plantzafrica.com/plantab/berchemzey.htm

If it does not kill them they will $hit bricks!

It will be interesting to find somebody that actually had success with this.

This actually a really old trick. Cruel as hell, but it works. In England they'd mix the crete with anything sweet. Preserves the corpse of the rat somewhat, so expect to find mummified rancid dead rats everywhere.

So they won't smell either?

Thanks for the info bsbullie.  It helps a lot.  Now I know what kind of dish I can make.  Unfortunately I don't have any experience of and don't know bread fruit at all.

112
Thanks jegpg1.  Does jackfruit compare to sweet potato or potato in cooking?

113
Hi Nicky
Sorry I saw your post only now.  Do you refer to braambos?  My husband always tells me about the thorns.  Unfortunately I don't know what it is in English.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this unripe jackfruit still edible?
« on: July 30, 2014, 05:16:02 PM »
We were so excited to get this jackfruit from a friend (here in South Africa you don't find jackfruit very easily), that we cut it before reading on the net how to know when jackfruit is ripe.  I know you can eat unripe jackfruit like a vegetable, but isn't this one too unripe?  How thick part of the skin do I need to take off?  If we were to left this jackfruit without cutting it, how long would it take to ripen?

I also read that unripe jackfruit don't have any latex.  This one had a lot.  After about a half an hour after cutting the latex was still coming out of it.

Hi to everybody
My father-in-law gave me a passion fruit seedling a while ago.  He said it is a new kind that is adapted for a specific region in South Africa.  The area that it grows in is extremely hot and dry in summers.  The winters again are extremely cold with rain and snow on higher areas.  As far as I know the soil in that region is sandy and not rich.
We planted the seedling.  It grows very well.  Our soil is also not very rich, but very rocky.  We get summer rainfall and our winters are very dry.  In the winter it is hot during the day, but some nights can get very cold - giving us a layer of ice on our sheep's water and dog's water.  Currently it is winter.  I only water this passion fruit once a week to once in every two weeks and then it is not buckets full of water.

Just look at the size.  The yellow passion fruit grows together with the purple one and get the same amount of water.

Thanks for a great tip!!  I know rats love peanut butter and hopefully this will do the trick.
Do you really think that it won't harm owls or hawks, because we have a lot.

118
I agree with Nicky on this one.  I'm dying to try one, but it is nowhere to be found in South Africa.  We envy you.

We did this...http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=6254.0

Thanks for the link.  Looks like if you don't use the exact words of the subject of previous postings in your search, you won't find the info that is already on the forum.

Thanks guys  ;D , I knew I could count on you to give me some great info.  This forum is really great to get info real fast.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First Keitt...
« on: July 14, 2014, 01:13:09 PM »
Sometimes we buy large amounts of Keitt from a farmer.  They are usually also rock hard when we buy them, but ripen very good.  Sometimes the skin will stay rather green, but the fruit will be ready to eat.

dragon fruit is a vine cactus

Hahaha.  We were discussing this same thing this morning at breakfast if I should include dragon fruit on the list or not - if it will be seen as a vine.  Thanks, now I know for sure.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / List of fruit growing on perennial vines
« on: July 14, 2014, 06:34:49 AM »
I looked on the forum for a list of fruit that grows on perennial vines, but couldn't find any list.

I am interested in such fruit, because they produce fruit much quicker than trees.

The fruit I can think of so far that I know of is:

-  Gac fruit
-  Monk fruit
-  Passion fruit
-  Oyster nut (couldn't find any so far from my contacts in Mozambique - I think it is out of season)
-  Cassabanana

Can anybody think of any more?  I will appreciate it if someone can help.

Hi Jackfruitjacky

I am looking for some of your Gac seeds.  I am from South Africa.  What do you like to trade it for?

Thanks

Luc, use Aloe vera gel It should rehydrate your Facial skin.
Zinc ointment also works wonders on burned skin.
