The fruit from Cereus genus, is said to be sweeter, as more cracked open it's skin is... Was the fruit you ate already cracked/open?

No, it was not cracked open.  I saw another thread about someone's cactus (I don't know if it is from the same genus), that the people also said you have to wait until it is cracked open.  Will try it next time.  The plants still have lots of flowers on, so we can keep experimenting.

LOL!!

Unfortunately we don't have any strip clubs nearby.  I will have to take the street corner.  If I'm lucky, I will receive R150 per client.  That means I will have to see at least 28 clients to buy one book.  Nope, I don't think it is worth it.  I also can't go without food for a month.

78
Oh dear!!  That is ridiculously expensive!!  You only need to pawn your car? LOL

If I convert a book of $249 to my currency, then I have to pay R4180.15!!  I can do a lot with that money - maybe a month's groceries for 4 people?  That is if you don't buy expensive food.

I think we can only write it at the bottom of our wishlist.

79
What prices are we looking at?

I see this is links for Volume 2 and Volume 3.  Do you perhaps know where to find Volume 1?  How many volumes are there?

Here is a more close-up photo.  This is the biggest fruit we could find.

I think if I want to, I can tear the fruit apart with two fingers.  I don't think you need a knife for it.

I think you can call it sub-tropical.

Summer it can get very hot and dry, although it is summer rainfall.
Winter you can get black frost and our diesel once froze, as well as the dogs' water bowl.

We couldn't see any signs that animals or insects ate it.  Although I need to mention that all the cacti fruit I collected in the same area were also without any signs that something ate it.

Then it must be a passiflora I have never heard of.  The skin doesn't resemble the passiflora varieties I know at all.

We found this when we went foraging for wild fruits today.  It is growing on a vine.  The size of the fruit is about as big as a kumquat.  The skin is soft.

86
We have this vines growing around here, but we never knew the name, until I stumbled upon it on the internet.  Can someone please confirm if it is Coccinia Sessilifolia.  Nobody around here eats it, except the birds and insects.

The fruit on the vine:

A ripe fruit and another cut open.

Today we went cactus hunting!!

We got some fruit from the cacti I was asking about.

We got beetroot prickly pear (I don't know what you guys call it), ordinary prickly pear (they grow in abundance around here), and the other two types I was asking about.

Here is an image of the fruit of the first cactus I asked about.  We tasted one fruit.  It is crisp, almost as crisp as a cucumber.  Not very juicy.  When having a small bite, it doesn't really have a taste.  But, when taking a bigger bite, there is a faint hint of a little sweetness, almost like cucumber.  I think it might be the same that Don described.  The size also sounds the same.  We took a cutting that has some flower buds on.

Here is an image of the second cactus.  The fruit doesn't have any thorns on, the skin is smooth.  This one is also not very juicy.  The taste is almost like kiwi fruit.

We divided one fruit of each between four of us.  Well, the fruit is definitely edible, because it is not the undertaker writing here.  I don't even have stomach cramps!!

Thanks everyone for helping me on this.

For anyone that is interested to see what the stamvrug tree looks like, I was able to take some photos today.

89
I will keep you posted when I tasted it. Will post photos of the open fruit.

Before tasting I will make a note next to me for the undertaker. If I don't make it, then he will post the message. Haha ;D

Hi all

Today we drove around, looking for wild fruit.  We found these three types of cacti.  Could anyone give me info whether it is safe to eat or not?  It grows in the northern part of Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces in South Africa

We went back to this cactus in the dark to see if any of the flowers are open, but none were.  Most of these plants were on the ground, but some went up in trees, almost like dragon fruit.  It is almost a kind of creeper.

Here is another type.  He is standing upright, almost like those that you see in the movies that is playing in the desert.  He can grow very tall, to 3 meters and more.

Here is another type:

Thank you

Today I am very excited.  My dragon fruit is flowering for the very first time.  I tried to hand pollinate it.  Last night only one flower was open, but there are more that still needs to open.  How long will it be before I can see if there will be any fruit?

Hallo to all

Here is a photo I took just now.  Now you can you all see what it looks like.  The fruit as it is, the fruit without the skin and then the seed.

Today I was able to get some more fruit.

All the trees in my area are currently fruiting, Stuart.  I think if you go to Hartebeespoort Dam within the next week or two, you might still be able to get some.  I am far from Hartebeespoort, so I don't know how fruiting time are different from us.

ChikaZ, I will really appreciate it if I can get adzuki beans from you.  My daughter is pestering me now for a few weeks to get hold of some seeds.  She is hoping to one day visit Japan or even move there and she heard about adzuki beans from Japanese stories. LOL

I think you are totally right!

We harvested some seeds from plants in our garden. We've put it in a ziplock bag with some coco peat.  It got some mold on and my daughter threw it in a container that we use to mix soil.  We used that soil in other pots.  All those seeds germinated like it looks like hair growing in the pot.  They germinated better than the other seeds of the same kind.

Please help to ID these seeds and plant.

I ordered these seeds from someone in China (not on this forum).  I ordered Gac seeds and this is what I received:

It does not totally look like a sitrus type of seed.

Also, this plant germinated from one of these seeds.

« on: January 03, 2016, 09:12:49 AM »
Hi all

I have a few packets of 10 seeds each of fresh stamvrug (Englerophytum magalismontanum).  I want to trade.  The preferred seeds that I am looking for is abiu, gac, mangosteen, jaboticaba, chocolate sapote, giant grenadilla and adzuki beans.  I will give preference to those who can trade with my preferred seeds.  Also, packets that are being send to me, needs a tracking code from your postal services, otherwise I won't receive it.  If needed, I will pay for the postal service.

Thank you

Well
One of my plants took off running.
Its about 8 ft growing up  a fence
the other hasnt moved. its still 1ft long...
i wonder if it needs a special relationship with the Mychorizea ?
like a nitrogen fixer or bean /

My papaya sometimes do this.
They can grow very slow, until they hit a point
Ive wondered if they are growing roots, or, they just happen to hit a pocket of nutrients, or water ?
Although sometimes i give them water and ferts, and still nothing.
then... BAM... all of a sudden, they take off.

FruitAddict, i know about the dog
mine is on lizard patrol every time we go outside.
she tears through any seedlings, ground-cover, or vine.
ive lost quite a few. i put tomato stakes up everywhere
but she gets through them.

cassabanana on right

Greenman62, my dog also got hold of a cherimoya that was about a metre high.  Today he decided that we need pepino cuttings.

Last week we moved most of our plants to an area we can close of with a electric fence that is specific for pets.  I know the dogs got in once, but I haven't seen any signs that they've been there again.
