Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My new Sweet Tart is full of fruit.
« on: March 24, 2018, 08:27:28 AM »
I don't know about Socal or other locations, but here in South Florida, in over a decade of growing mango trees (about 3 dozen of them), I've never pruned fruit on young trees and it's never been an issue.

While pruning fruit is necessary for some species (eg, Jackfruit -- which will go into decline if allowed to carry too much fruit), mangoes will do one of two things: either they will abort the fruit on their own, or the fruit will turn out small. But neither case presents a detriment to the tree.

My sweet tart did the same thing actually. I planted mine out from a 7 gallon, and within a year, it produced 2 dozen fruits -- all of which I allowed to remain until maturity. The fruit were all excellent, albeit a bit small.

The ST is dropping a few tiny fruit a day.   Looks like i'll get aboot 2 or three dozen to mature.  That's fine Can't wait to taste this thing!!!

Mangos during the  Florida off season are found in  grocery stores like Bravo.  They taste kinda crappy though.  If your taste buds are shot you'll love them!!!  lol

Now is too early!  Fruit will be ready to enjoy in June and July.   Or you can try some of the ones they sell in Bravo.  Taste like caca though!!!

I have cherimoya growing in between mangos and palms.  Had a few fruit but it has been left to grow wild these days.  Still have seeds from fruit I ate in Barcelona.   One of the best tasting fruits in the world by the way!!!

I have some seeds from fruit I bought on my last trip to Barcelona Spain at the Mercat de la Boqueria.  Two trees sprouted taproots and are anchored in the ground around the pool.  Several fruit have formed over the years but none have achieved mature size.  Basaically forgot they were there under the palm trees.  Will never forget how good the fruit is --- one of the most delicious I've ever eaten.

I brought home a few cherimoya seeds from fruit I bought  on my last trip to Barcelona, Spain.  What a flavor!!!    Got 2 to sprout at home and this year had my first fruit.  Still in pots and will go in the ground this fall.   One of the best tasting fruit in the world

My Pickering were the best to my taste.  Rest of the family liked them as well as the Glenn and Mallika.  The Cogshall was not bad this year and gave up over a hundred fruit as it's the oldest.   Gotta eat the crap from Sams  now ---- Yuk!!!  Still waiting for the Nam Doc Mai,Cat Hoa Loc and Po Pu Kalay to fruit.

My Pickering is in the ground 5 years and the fruit right now is out-a-sight delicious.  Rich and sweet.    And the current crop is sweet and richer that the first ones like Cookie  said.  Also doing well are the Nam Doc Mai, Glenn, Mallika and Cat Hoa Loc.  Even the Cogshall are good.  Oh yeah --- the tree ratz polished off at least 15% of the Cogs.  Started trapping to no avail.  This area never runs out of the furry bestids!!!!

I have so much fruit now I starting trading mangos for free beer at the local Irish pub.  Win win win.

Used the correct tank this time and used FRESH Roundup. This is most important.

When I lived In Charlotte, NC I had a contractor put in 5 large trees that would shade the south facing deck. He said it's ok to use leftover last years Roundup for flower bed clean up but for fast removal of grass sod for tree panting it must be fresh!!!

16
I forgot which of the two spray tanks is used for fertilizer and which for Roundup.  Found the smaller one first that had a bunch of mix left over so I used it.

Turned out to be the fertilizer solution.  Further search found the Roundup sprayer which is clearly marked for weed killer.   Mixed up a new batch and went at it.  I hope this never happens again!!!  It's too hot out there !!!!!!!

5/6 UPDATE ------- Did a walk around last PM on the Tomcat baits and every one had been carried off overnight. About 20 baits total. Spaced about 8 ft apart. This is why it's a big problem. There's a friggin army of the furry bestids out there!!!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Has anyone else heard of this problem?
« on: May 03, 2017, 02:19:03 PM »
Had to post this story after what has been going on lately. I have a fenced in yard with a pool and enclosure. I walk the 3 dogs outside the enclosure. Used to leave the poop and bag it up in the AM. About a month ago the dog poop started disappearing overnite!!!!!

Turned out to be rats. I now have to pick it up before nightfall.  And I'm not in the gongfermors union!
Now I set traps.

I also spread around some Tomcat bait chunks over the fence in the wooded lot next door.
And I hate having rats near my mango, banana and avocado trees.

Gimme a break
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I live east of you in PSL off Rosser one mile south of Gatlin and I grow and fruit Pickering, Cogshall, Sweet Tart and Lemon Zest mango no problem.  Also Avocado and several different musa - bananas.  Biggest problem right now is NO RAIN.  The Irrigation system has had times increased per zone. and am just about ok.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cherimoya from chile : Delicious!!!

My store-bought experience has been that cherimoyas from USA were always very good while every single fruit from outside the US has been shitty.  Fruit is so bad, I wouldn't even chuck them our Ohio douche bag John Kasich.
LOL

Double LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use 6 3 16 from Diamond R in Ft Pierce.  It works great for the 4 to 5 periodic appls I do annually.  The lable on the bag says its organic.  Its fine for the bananas all year round.  For mango, avocado etc I put it down for the pre fruit appl only.    Resr of the year its their 8 4 8.   These two come in 50 lb bags for about 22 bucks.  Nobody beats that!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting plantain variety

I'm working on this issue right now.  Word got out within the WI families in my area and they are knocking on the door.  First thing after hello neighbor is --- Got any plantains, man?

Starting pulling several mats of fruit naners that I'm tired of and plantains will go in those spots.  Got two types of African Rhino Horn planted.  One is from PR Giants and the other is from Home Despot.  I have my doubts about the latter based on past purchases.  We will see.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Big banana bunch
« on: March 17, 2016, 04:45:12 PM »
Biggest banana bunch this year-- FHIA 2 -- 46 lbs

Just cut down this bunch and the taste is fantastic. Good weight too. Have 8 more bunches filling in on just about every mat.

Fastest way to get the dogs in from the yard - yell bananas.
