Two possibilities --- low potassium fert or standing water.  I have many seeds started and they green up and take off with 6-3-16 + minors from Diamond R.   No more problems.

Buongiorno Pan ----- I can send you budwood from my Pickering.  Also Cogshall, Sweet Tart and Lemon Zest.  Let me know.   If you would like I have 5 small seedling Pickering trees started this year.  Finding a small grafted Pickering will take some time.

Don't forget.  Words to live by.  Don't waste those mangos!!!

"Slight give to thumb pressure tells you it is ready to eat.  Do not let it get too soft.

Same for cados.

Potting in a cloth bag like a Jackpot will speed up the growth rate dramatically.  And you can step up the pot size as needed.   I have a grafted Genip that languished for several years in plastic pots.  It  tripled its size in one year after repotting in a Jackpot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Banana Leaf Insect Damage
« on: April 02, 2015, 01:15:50 AM »
It pays to inspect plants often. Grubs get to chomping on newly forming banana leaves. As the new cigar leaf emerges, the damaged area, and usually the grub, are pushed up enough to grab the grub. I catch them before they burrow back down.  Smear them on the fence.

Ae Ae, Hua Moa and ensette Maurelli are mainly affected.

This happens every spring and usually on only 1 or 2 pstems. Don't spray - too much fun to catch 'em and squish 'em!!!  Then I pour  a bit of insecticide weekly down the top to get any little ones for a month or so

Order your pap seeds from Aloha Seeds.  Or direct from U of Hawaii.  You will get what you want.  I you don't care go ahead and plant the seeds.   Some will be close to mama plant fruit.

I just got a pkt of X 77 Waimanalo seeds and ate a nursery fruit yesterday.  It's great.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Unproductive Cogshall. . .Any Ideas Why?
« on: January 20, 2015, 03:38:37 PM »
My Cogshall is doing great after 2 years in ground.  Came from Excalibur.

West side view --- loaded with big panicles.

South side view

Little mangos forming

Haven't put anything down yet this year.  I fert monthly with 6-3-16 with minors from Diamond R.  February to November.
No signs of drop off, disease or panicle wilt.  Except when my new Min Pin eats the lower buds.

Water two inches deeper than the live trap....
Big possum can have a 3 inch snoot. ;D

Seriously --- I have been looking for a container with live trap dimensions.  Still looking.

I had several cogshall mangos bitten into by birds this season.  Drop offs were chomped or carried off by squirrels, raccoons and opossum.   So the traps went back in use.  So far 3 coons, 2 squirrels and 5 possum.   Here is the latest - a juvie.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: culantro
« on: September 21, 2014, 02:12:18 AM »
Here in PSL the Home Depot or Lowes has seedlings in the spring.  Produced by Bonnie.

Culantro makes the best sofrito!!!

And the 2 plants I put in the raised box are still alive.  Produces thick very funky green leaves.  Must top off the seed heads or that is all you will have.

Go to Excalibur nursery in Lake Worth.  Today is good.

Picked a beauty off the Cogshall last nite while walking the dog. Even in the low light I could see the blush starting. Time to get it off before the freaking mockingbirds peck holes in it. Even has a spur at the beak.

 Weighs a full 1.5 lbs.

are you making possum stew with your critter hauls?  :o

Funny you should ask.........ran into this recipe.   Sounds interesting.  :o ::)

Wild Possum Kebobs
Ingredients:
    1 Still breathing, corn-fed Possum
    3 Ripe but firm tomatoes
1 Large white or yellow onion
    1/2 pound large mushrooms
    2 large green peppers
    1 package meat marinade
    1/2 cup soy sauce
12 skewers (sticks are okay in Arkansas)

Preparation: The possum must be alive so that you can scare it, giving you the "wild" taste from all the adrenaline it produces. It is best to hit it over the head with a large object in a humane manner. Boil the possum for 3 minutes to loosen the fur then skin and gut it.
De-limb (chop the little knubby legs off) the possum and cut the meat into 1/2 inch square chunks. Marinate overnight in a mixture of meat marinade and soy sauce. Kentucky residents who have no fridge can use an ice chest and may use radiator coolant instead of soy sauce.
Thread the meat and veggies onto your skewer/stick in alternating sequences to distribute the delicious flavor evenly. Cook over a barbecue, pit, 50 gallon drum or any other fire till you get the desired result. For added flavor, you can cook it over burning tires.

Thanks for the picking advice.  I had to pick the one big Pickering green with some color.  Too close to the ground for safety.  Was in a clamshell and leaked sap when I plucked it.  Have caught 3 big opossums so far and I'm afraid it's only a dent in the population.  Just checked the Cogs and picked one yello-ish..No holes - so the owls seem to work.

46
The mocking birds started pecking holes in the fruit as they started to color up.  I check twice a day now and pick them off.  There are 2 plastic Owls perched in the Cogs now and they help.

The only fruit in the tray are Cogs and Glenn.  The tree was tagged as Glenn when I got it from Nelsons.   Tastes good but the Cogs are better.   Seeing less jelly since I started to pick earlier.

This is the Sweet Tart.  Only had 6 fruit.  It's still potted.  Got it this year from Trees n More.  Ate the first one and it was great.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / First mangos on Cogshall and Sweet Tart
« on: July 03, 2014, 08:32:49 AM »
In St Lucie county the mango picking and eating has finally started.

First ever crop on the new Cogs.

Tray has Glenn, Sweet tart and Cogs Hall.

Had my first Carrie at Trees n More nursery last year.  Mike had one in the frig picked at just the right time and cut it up.  I was surprised at the powerful flavor.  Very deep rich flavor with a good balance of sweet and tart.  Planning to graft some Carrie budwood on to my big Cogshall this year.
This is a very special variety.   Could eat a dozen in one sitting.  And skip dinner. ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Glenn Mango
« on: June 01, 2014, 10:03:37 AM »
My Glenn is 10 ft tall and still potted.   It fruits every year.  The trick is to control fertilization.  Meaning don't do it!!!  Too much N will knock the fruit off the tree and channel resources to growth.  I give it a little 6-3-16 when it flowers.  Repeat a month later.  Then only water.  Lots of fruit!!!!!
