Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Grafting. Okay to Commence?
« on: April 19, 2014, 10:57:54 AM »
Gurus advice for a first timer is wait for warmer weather --- June, July.

Avocado grafting best in Feb, Mar.

Goldfinger and SH3640.  Also Viente Cohol.  A friend in PR reports that the VC is one of the best tasting naners he ever had next to the Morado.  He has a 15 acre farm.  Grows mostly plantains - cash crop.   Grew the Sweetheart once, and after tasting the fruit dug up the whole thing and gave it away.  I gagged on how sickeningly sweet it was.  That's just my taste.   I eat sauerkraut as a side dish.  Yum yum.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unknown Avo and Cogshall need advice
« on: April 09, 2014, 10:52:46 AM »
My first larger trees shot panicles and have small fruit.  Haven't ferted, sprayed or pruned  yet this year.  Did my first grafts on the Avo - waiting for signs of life.

What should I be doing now?  Took pics of each side.

Hi Marlene ---- it's me Dan.  Have you done the tour of Victors place?

His lychee is about 30 ft tall and the panicles are showing.  He should be bringing in a bunch to the tasting table at the TCRFC in the next month or so.

A bigger pot will give you a better fruit yield.   In ground with lots of organic matl will produce super bunches.

I need to repot mine ASAP!  Same for the red --- and the blue --- and the Sabara.

I blame the new puppy for the confusion.  Chewing on my toes while I'm trying to type.  lol

My 2 low chill peaches are Tropic beauty and an unknown from Botanics in Palm City.  They are doing fine but the squirrels wiped out the unknowns harvest.  37 peaches gone overnight! >:( :'(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tori Loquat attacked! Aaackkkkkk!

I haven't tried any yet.  The 2 that got molested were the first to turn yellow.  That's why I moved the pot into the pool enclosure.  No birds - just a hungry Labrador, and a little Shiba Inu that puts anything and everything into her  mouth.  I'll still take my chances with the dogs.  The Tori fruiting is a one time a year event right?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tori Loquat attacked! Aaackkkkkk!
« on: March 14, 2014, 12:07:49 PM »
I got this grafted Tori loquat from Adam a year ago.  Was a 1ft tall bareroot.  It fruited already and 11 fruit took.  Working outside I passed by and saw 2 fruit got nibbled on.  Still hanging on the tree - one was gouged out missing the seed and another was chewed on a bit.  Broke them off and brought the tree into the pool enclosure.   I'm gonna taste these guys this year!!!

My guess is a squirrel.  What do you think?  Time to get some more Mackintosh apples and bait both traps again.

I hit 5 local stores yesterday looking for the Schick injector blades.  Nobody carries old stuff anymore.  :o   One clerk laughed at me.  :-[    Feels like I'm stuck in a time vortex.

So I have to go online for this, right?   :P

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: The Chamber of Death - our Grow Tent
« on: March 01, 2014, 08:32:28 AM »
I seem to be killing off stuff less these days.   I'm now convinced it's watering.  Too much water will set up all kinds of plant damaging conditions.  I almost lost my Ae Ae mat last year.  Found out, after unusually heavy rains, that that area is the lowest in my yard and had 4 inches of standing water for over a day.  That's unusual in sandy sugar  soil.  So I shut off the water lines to that entire area and today the mat is producing big healthy pups.  No irrigation water for a year and surrounding plants are fine also.

Take a hint from your grandfather-in-laws dried out 3.5 foot tall papaya tree in a pot.  A good way to test for when water is needed is to lift a dry potted plant to get a feel for the weight.  Water once sparingly.  Come back later and water only when the weight feels noticeably lighter.  Kinda tough with 30 gal pots though.  lol

My unknown potted peach has set fruit early.  In the background is the Pisang Klotek with mostly toasted leaves and a new flower.  GAB

told you it was a bunch of hoopla...

I will remember the websites that lied to us.

NOAA predicted my low at 34F.  At 6 AM it only hit 49.  Saw some tomato leaf damage - that's it.

Didn't cover nuthin!

Six AM was 48 deg.  Looks like that's it.  Tomatoes, peppers, parsley ok.  Basil too.

Dogs love it.  They keep asking to go out again.

At 2:30 AM it's 54 degrees with 40% RH. Walked the dogs early and they loved it. Me not so much. Woof!

All plants are on their own.  Expecting a low of 59F.

I always harvest banana bunches when the fruit has filled in and the skins are full green.  Never wait till they turn yellow.  Every critter in Florida will target my place.  Hang the bunch in the house off the kitchen counter with a bracket and 120 lb fishing line.  A few days, a week goes by and everyone is eating home grown naners and they usually don't ripen all at once.  Finishing up a Goldfinger bunch right now - wonderful taste and texture.  Skins of bananas that ripen in the house can split but a lot less than outside ripening and drying out on the plant.

. The only problem is that it's common knowledge that it's a nightmare to grow it at my location. I'm currently field testing it to see if there is some way to go around, over or under, this problem.

Please explain.   I've grown Manzano before.   No problems except it's a tall variety.   Just planted another variation that I got from PR.  Beautiful plant.

Do you really? I have friends that praise raccoon meat but never tried myself... How is it?
Those damn things harass my Jack Russell , he doesn't back down but their pack could destroy him.

I season grilled raccoon with about a TBSP. of garlic powder per pound.   We Texans also grow more hair on our chest by adding garlic powder to our morning cup of coffee.  You hairless Asians ought take heed.  :)

Get 2 more JRs.  The masked bandits won't stand a chance!  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Biochar question
« on: October 16, 2013, 08:25:14 AM »

Im sorry, but I don't see dramatic result, I see a tree that has been planted in the grown for 10 months. Besides that isn't the supposed benefit of biochar, the benefit would be a long term soil fertility not short term growth, thats what fertilizer already does.

You are correct of course.   I just wanted to post a pic of how well the tree is doing.   The Duncan that this one replaces did very poorly in this spot and had to be yanked.  The organics added to the soil fill was done for the first time in this spot and that has changed everything.   Also first time using the 8-3-9.  My sugar sand mixed with clay is terrible.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Namwah Banana Plants front Landscape ..
« on: October 14, 2013, 11:56:21 PM »
The guy I bought my first Ae Ae pups from got hit by one of those "sticky finger" dorkamundos.   The day after I picked up 2 pups they came at night and pulled all of them right out of the ground.  He had them planted in his front yard.  :o

He never did that again.

So Ed ---- cut the bunches down after the fingers have filled in but are still green.   That should work unless they read this post. ::) :P
