Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ideal Tree Spacing
« on: March 23, 2012, 03:43:31 PM »
What is the "ideal" tree spacing?  I currently plant my trees 16 feet apart.  But I was a little disheartened to see Oscar cut down several of his 20 year old Lychee trees because they were too close at 16 feet.  Thoughts?

Oscar:  You make a good point.  But I think we have a different understanding of my soil type.  My sandy soil doesn't drain like beach sand.  My soil is sandy with some organics mixed in and I also put a compost ring and compost layer around the tree, which should help with water retention.

Did you see this USDA 2009 article "Lychee Studies Yield Keys To Plentiful, Predictable Harvest"?  http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2009/090518.htm

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Micro Irrigation Wizards?
« on: March 23, 2012, 01:50:53 PM »
We have frequent water restrictions in south Florida that prevent watering or use of sprinklers, but micro irrigation is exempt from the water restriction.  I will be micro irrigating my fruit trees and need to figure out how much water to give each of them.  I am in Zone 10.  My soil is sandy and drains well.  Depending on the time of year the watertable is probably 5-10 feet under ground.  I do not have sprinklers for my lawn.

Mango - Carrie
Mango - Coconut Cream
Avocado - Choquette
Cherry Guava (Strawberry Guava)
Lychee - Sweet Heart
Dragon Fruit - Mystic

I currently plan on putting 2 Gal per day on each of the trees, the drip would start around 5 AM and drip for about 1 hour (using a timer).   Thoughts?  Recommendations?

In general, I have heard of people using small paint brushes to help pollenate (instead of the finger method described).

Thank you for your suggestions; I will be researching them further.  We have a local rare fruit show coming up on Saturday, so I can make a few purchases.  I have 1.25 acres to play.  Thanks again!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Suggestions For New Fruit Trees?
« on: March 18, 2012, 12:51:07 PM »
I am looking at adding a few more fruit trees to my collection.  I am in Zone 10 (West Palm Beach, FL).   I currently have:  Mangos, Lychee, Cherry Guava, and Avocado.  The things I am looking for are:  1) Fast growing, 2) Ease of care, 3) High Fruit Yield, 4) Good taste (I like sweet), 5)  No thorns (ouch!).  A long crop cycle would also be nice.  Any suggestions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bat Houses - Good or Bad?

Oscar:  Thanks, I hadn't thought about bats flying at night instead of the day.  That is actually great news... I was worried that the bats might eat the bees that pollenate the flowers.

Mangomandan:  Thanks for the welcome.  This shows a picture of the Cherry Guava:  http://belindamoore.blogspot.com/2008/02/cherry-guava.html  It is also called a Strawberry Guava.

Hi, my name is Mark.  I am new here and new to tropical fruit growing.  I live in West Palm Beach, Florida.  I have 1.25 acres of land with sandy soil and using well water.  I started by buying six "minature green houses" from WalMart and planted various perennial flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables in the greenhouses, then went on a two week vacation.   ::)  I also cut 2 liter bottles of sodas in half and used those as minature greenhouses.  When I came back two weeks alter, half of the seeds have sprouted.  Then I bought my first true tropical fruit tree from a big box store called "Costco" a Red Lady Papaya.  Within a week of planting the Red Lady Papaya, I planted a Carrie Mango, Sweet Heart Lychee, and Cherry Guava, which I got from a local grower.  My newest acquisitions are an Choquette Avocado tree, Coconut Cream Mango and two dragon fruit cuttings.  I apparently have dived head long into fruit trees.  I need to figure out a micro irrigation system and some master plan on how I should be planting my trees.   :-\   I discovered a free source of compost and picked up my first load today.  I will also be planting my the flowers, veggies and fruits that I have started as seeds sometime in the near future.  :)
