Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: White Sapote --anyone growing it?
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:14:06 PM »
I will ask again, only in this thread.  Anybody growing "Leroy" white sapote?  Anybody in Florida?  Any info on production of ghis variety in Florida?  Pollination problems?

I grow "Leroy" I have access to the original tree and have grafted up quite a lot.  Leroy is quite old and not sure what will happen with his fruit trees after he is gone.
I also grow Walton, Selck, Chestnut, Vernon, Suebelle, McDill and two from Adam in Florida named Smathers and Skipper. All of my trees are multi-grafted since I don't really have room for huge trees.

Do white sapote scions travel well?
So many great sounding cultivators! I have an unknown seedling iv had for 2 years no sign of flowering. I dunno how old it was when I bought it but would be awesome to get some fruit sooner especially since this came from one massive and very old tree iv never tasted. We have an extremely poor gene pool here I'm sure this is archaic compared to improved varieties available now. This pic is from Jan is there any way to guesstimate the fruits form based on the trees attributes?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My Long Island Garden:
« on: June 15, 2014, 04:41:14 AM »
Congrats on the Pickering. Some advice on the container collection. Make sure to not over collect, and focus on fewer plants that produce rather then abundance of plants. When the time comes with packing up and moving the plants to a new home etc., it will make it much easier with a smaller collection.
Great collection plantlover! Really pushing the limits of what can be grown seeing banana plants in an area that snows is really cool, you can have a tropical gardening summer then pack it all inside for winter. I'm in a similar situation but not as cold winters as you! If your collection is like this now I can only imagine in a few years:)

That may be good advice Nullzero to stay smaller so care is less divided etc but in practice very hard to resisst the "just one more" feeling. It's like you know you don't have any room but you convinced you can make a space:P
Take the pure joy of gardening, the fanaticism of collecting and add to that, your collection may reward you with something we are primarily geared to love. That's a recipe for obsession if ever I saw one! Just possession of a interesting and rare fruiting plant is a thrill for some of us even if there's a very low chance of fruiting

I wonder if temporarily making bonsais of plants will adversely effect them when you one day pot up?

Wow twelve years I can't even imagine! At least with lotus they sprout pretty fast when given the right conditions I knew they were long lived bit 1300 really is impressive.
I hope there is a way to improve germination for platonia I can only afford a few seeds so if germination speed is just luck of the genetic draw I will just have to hope. I find it much harder to keep seeds alive without rot for long periods and once they sprout breath a sigh of relief.

Awesome thread! Flower Smell is such an underrated aspect of fruit trees.
Star ruby grapefruit is an absolutely incredible smell and permeates the whole greenhouse  Naartjie is pretty nice too. I don't really like the smell of mango flowers. If you count rosehips as a fruit(I love rosehip syrup) everyone knows they can smell amazing.
Though not the same kind of sweet bloom smell I love the strong scented leaves like tree tomato, white sapote and some Annonas have a strong smell I find pleasant too

Hmm will also be interested to hear if there are any tricks scarify? Hot water? Smoke? Bottom heat? Acid?anything that can help since GA3 is normaly my trump card! I read on an old thread on this forum(http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=3020.0) it can take up to 1000 days to send up a shoot. Wow that is long even my marula at longest took 2 years only and I had forgotten about them by then. Almost three years just to send up the shoot something to speed this up would be very useful!

1031
Thank you Roy I only saw your message now. I have responded:)
I have used triphala before but only the prepackaged powder had a teaspoon every night before bed in warm water. Never had better digestion etc then when I use It!

1032
Ricardo that is a great selection of very fresh looking seeds. Is there any special trick with germinating Platonia? I have only one small seedling from seeds a number of times?

I have seen pictures of a big uchi tree in Hawaii. I have had poor germination with this species also.
Mike do you.think GA3 could helping germination?

1033
Yes those are the three triphala ingredients. Do you know if it is only dried fruit flesh used or are the seeds ground in too?

1035
Also wanted to ask since you seem to have access to Ayurvedic plants if you have
Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia)
Bhringaraj (eclipta alba)
Interested in many of the rasayana plants

1036
Since you are selling the chebula too all you need is Amla to have the mix for the famous triphala
I love triphala better than any fibre for keeping regular and help many stomach problems. Very special in ayurveda:)

This tree seems very interesting! any truth to the seed kernels being narcotic? Are they safe to eat? Or just the flesh? I'm not sure what part is used for triphala but was definitely far from narcotic and rather felt like a strong health tonic.
I already have Amla seedlings would love to add the next triphala component.

What are you looking for trade or sale?

1037
Not sure about that either. Just wanted to mention Thailand and Taiwan are two different entities. The website posted in first message is from Taiwan and the seller likely won't export those plants. They have strict policies about that.
I can see many rare seeds offered by some or other Thailand Ebay seller but can you buy and import those in US?
Thank you for the clarification it easy to confuse the two similar names!
I'm not sure about USA I think you send them your seed permit or just take a chance? I'm meant to get permission from specific gov department but it's very difficult I always just take a chance with seeds and haven't been confiscated yet.

1038
I just assumed they must be grown there to survive a month plus shipping to me from Thailand and still be so fresh. Or how do they do middleman selling with recalcitrant seeds?

1039
I get even south American fruit seeds from Thailand Plinia edulis and Achachairu already sprouted roots:) this one ebay seller will bankrupt me with rare seeds just at this time in the season they have poshte, cassia leiandra, Inga cinnamomea, Garcinia madruno, Garcinia gardneriana, pindaiba, annona crassifolia, acai etc etc seems like you can get almost any tropical fruit somewhere in Thailand. Thai people must be really passionate about collecting fruit from around the world I would love to go there!
It wouldn't surprise me if mexican garcinia is fruiting somewhere in Thailand, It's nice to have gotten Lucs garcinia seeds straight from the original source though 8)

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WTB - Finger lime
« on: June 12, 2014, 01:46:39 AM »
I think these citrus are set to come to wider western  public soon. They are beautiful, novel and all I have heard about the taste is that it's nice and typical citrus range of flavours just in the cool caviar format:)
I would love to get my hands on some seeds especially ones more likely to come out deep red but beggars can't be choosers so I would purchase any:). I saw one cultivator online called crimson tide that actually was a deep red colour inside and.almost black outside looks like real red caviar. Very pretty interesting new citrus

Hi Koba
Do any of the wild ones compare at all in looks or taste to the selected varieties?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Seedless Sapodillas
« on: June 10, 2014, 06:59:04 AM »
I have read you can spray hormones during flowering to induce fruit set without pollination. You can get a seedless tomato like this. Could this not have been the case here?

1043
How easily do the seeds germinate?
What conditions does this plant need to grow?
Are the berries the medicinal component?

When I google I only found medicinal info.
This is an adaptogenic I didn't even know existed and seems like it may be stronger even.than ashwagandha!!! Ashwagandha works so well this must give insane energy:D

1044
Stuart, you can read it here:

Makes for very interesting reading!
Thank you Oscar I have been searching for exactly this type of info for awhile now 8)

Really cool.
I want!

1046
Thank you!

Just wanted to ask how people's seeds are doing?
Mine were packed perfectly and all arrived looking pretty fresh.
Since then two have gone soft and rotted but the other 8 or so seem to have swelled nicely and are harder.than when I got them.
Almost no germination pictures or info to be found online for this fruit mostly just get marketing product info. I don't even know how long it should take etc If I can get even one to sprout I will be very very happy but I worry about my countries abysmal post office and the long transit time it had to endure due to this.
So RICBITAR or others in the know please advise:)
+-How long should they take and any normal germination procedures to avoid? I have half of them in moist peat in a ziplock bag and the other half in a pot with high humidity and warm temps.
Any advices or experiences welcomed.
Thanks!

Any updates on the Soursops?
Did they survive potting?
Very interested to know of the Soursop airliners grow any differently.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Thailand watermelon injections?
« on: May 30, 2014, 06:06:08 PM »
Read on article about hundreds of watermelons exploding in China! Turns out it was the incorrect spraying of Forchlorfenuron a growth regulator coupled with excessive rains. Imagine your whole seasons crop exploding!
I think with all PGRs correct ppm is paramount.

Wouldn't injecting sugar while still growing cause rot?

1050
Sounds awesome please update on any progress :)
