Minimise as many variables as possible and use as many control and extra light plants as possible(would be best for all the plants to be clones but that is impractical to say the least so hopefully siblings should suffice) if you don't already have get a light timer so that the day/night times are consistent. Possibly could benefit from a temp and humidity monitor to make sure is same between control and experiment. Also would be better if you could do a control, a mid light level(18/6) and an absolute light level(24/0)
I have to do 24/0 during winter for the added heat maybe in summer I can do an experiment but maybe with your findings I won't have to:)
Light cycles really really get me excited I have also wanted to try strange daylengths eg 6/6 or 9/3 and see what if any effects there would be.

As for the growth regulators they are applied by Foliar feeding not hydro so really easy. I purchased Triacontanol and , Brassinolides 0.1%, 6-benzylaminopurine and fulvic acid. I intend to experiment on some of my extra seedlings and I'm hoping to maybe increase the benefit they can derive from 24/0. I have heard nothing but good things about Triacontanol and know weed growers who dramatically decreased the juvenile/vegetative stage and still increased yields. The 6 Benzylaminopurrine I have seen online completely halt verticle growth in some plants and induce side branching and pupping even in very young cactus! plus could be very useful for the verticaly challenged, to increase plant mass, stem girth, root mass decrease node length, increase bud sites, fruit set, fruit quality, resistance to environmental stressors etc etc
Certainly intriguing, inexpensive(for the home grower) and possibly another way to decrease juvenile period?
Certainly the studies and on Triacontanol shows incredible growth rates but no words on how tropicals would react I'm keen to find out. Unless anyone has heard of dangers to health with using these(bear in mind I am many years from fruiting so I would assume if there was toxicity a years flush would make it safe? Or can PGRs permanently alter the gene expression of plants rendering edibles permanently unsafe?)
Either way I will be using these on my roses and ornamentals:)

I would also be very interested to find out about this!
Iv found young seedlings of many tropicals to get a much shorter internode length with 24/0 but maybe same could be achieved with same total amount of light but over 12 hours

Iv also been wondering about plant growth regulators in conjunction with extra daylength(Triacontanol, Brassinolides,Benzylaminopurine etc etc there are very many) they definitely work.on some ornamentals have them flowering inches high!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First taste of mangosteen
« on: May 20, 2014, 06:19:01 AM »
Well let's put it this way, nobody so far has been succesful in getting mangosteen to fruit in Southern California. It's even very difficult to get them to fruit in S. Florida. Right now i'm on a mangosteen diet...eating loads of them has had a bumper crop for first time. Will try to post photos in another thread.
Please do!

Good day
will you post seeds to south africa????
Yes they were posted to me no problem you will just have to see if RICBITAR has any left:)
Great to see another south African on the forum! I'm convinced there are more of us rarer fruit enthusiasts than Google would have me believe. If we could all get together it would be really something to be able to trade etc I cant even find one annona grower in S.A online and there can't be none in the whole country all I can find is standard orchard cultivators of mango, litchi etc can't even find a Jackfruit to taste and I know they grow here as I saw some years ago before I cared much for fruit unfortunately.
Anyway welcome to the forum:)

Very brave!
I thought you are meant to rub on sensitive skin wait a few days then rub on tongue then tiny bite etc etc
Have known people to get mushroom ID wrong and it's not pretty! Some poisons can be accumulative I wouldn't try more of this till you have a proper ID. Hopefully someone out forum knows of it looks interesting!
Don't want to be the recipient of a Darwin award!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mangosteen scam
« on: May 18, 2014, 05:32:43 PM »
So I just wanted to post an update on the seeds I bought.
So the mangosteens are 1.5months old since they were received in post and planted on 4 April.
I had four of each set germinate.

Here are the "normal" mangosteens

And here are the so called "dwarfs"
(one of them not pictured was very slow to start and is much less developed and the one in the top left is one of each kind inexpertly approach grafted just for fun and to save space)

So not majorly different especially taking into account the dwarf kind had slightly larger seeds.
I will post more pics in a couple months to see if there seems to be any differentiation in growth rates
Very fun so far even if I am very very sceptical of it flowering in only 16 months time lol I will be happy for them just to be alive by then!

I have no idea what the growth rate of mangosteen is normally like, they are pretty slow though.
Do the new leafs always come out red like that even when mature? I was surprised at how beautiful they are a brilliant pink red.

Wow looks beautiful!
I always thought abiu was much smaller for some reason probably just from pics with no scale.
Sure sounds and looks tastey!
Always warms my heart to hear about high quality seedling fruit:)

Hi domdonv
Welcome to the forum:)
I'm sure if anybody can help you in your search they can be found here!
Try looking in the buy, sell trade sub forum and you can also post a thread with the words wanted followed by what you are looking for there.
It may be quite expensive to get plant material shipped I think you may also still need a phyto for scions. I have the same problem here so rely mainly on seeds from overseas. Even though seeds need permission in my country too they almost always slip through.

Have you asked at local nurseries I know they may not sell a large variety of cultivators but iv found often people working at nurseries can be enthusiasts themselves and can have some more exciting stuff to share if you ask. I found a guy working the info desk at a large local nursery by chance and he has many mango cultivators the nursery doesn't sell!
The nursery suppliers may also have more variety if you ask.

What minimums can very young seedlings(3 months give or take) take?
Even with pretty constant high humidity and temps absolute lowest being 18C highest 27C leaves keep browsing at edges and dying:(
Can too much artificial light cause this?

Wow I had no idea the blooms were so so beautiful!!

I got a mexican garcinia last year and was 4 months old when i got it and now it just put out its 2 set of leaves

It's only putting out its second set of true leaves and is over 6 months?
How slow starting is mexican garcinia? Even some of my  mangosteens are putting out their second set of leaves and  they are 1.5months

I am excitedly awaiting seeds from Luc and can't wait to get them! I love opening theail box to find seeds I always drop everything to plant/bag them that minute:)

All my large pots are full of earthworms and I can't see any sign of root damage when I transplant.
I don't think they eat the roots unlike cutworms which are a pest and a hated menace:( the earthworms only seem to help keep the soil.nice and aerated. They are especially good if I mulch with nice food for them:)

1063
For your information , all the Theobromas are doing very well at my place , 20 North 300 above sealevel .

luc, have you any experience  grafting your different theobromas?
I found this article but can only see the abstract without paying.

Hello

Could u answer my PM?

I really want to buy it. it is my best wish item.
I'm Sure he will answer it can't have even been 24 hours since you sent the pm :P

Looks awesome.
Do you have any pics of the tree or foliage?
Whats the taste like?Iv read it is creamy and sub acid.
Are the seeds edible like cacao?
I also read there are efforts to make this the next "superfood" like acai very interesting!
Im sure humidity would need to be on the high side like other theobroma.

Do we have to take priority mail? for me priority, express, airmail and std envelope all take exactly the same here for some reason its always around a month or slightly more so paying extra $$$ for priority is money down the drain...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing Schisandra chinensis?
« on: April 29, 2014, 07:40:17 AM »
Thanks Luisport:)
Im gonna look around too, see if i cant find any seed sources. I want to try as I have some gibberellic acid I got to try on some ilama seeds and maybe it will overcome stratification not sure though.
I am absolutely hopeless at stratification and for schisandra theres alot of conflicting info about this(if you can find any at all) If you are cold enough maybe just planting them outside in autumn may be enough? I always just lose seeds that way happened a bunch of times with ginseng.
I wish you luck in all your schisandra endeavors:)

I hope to grow many of the 50 fundamental herbs one day and hopefully many from Ayurveda too. Though I dont blindly believe in every remedy they propose but I have immense respect for both and the knowledge they have gained over millenia!
Love to make tea and my own tinctures I think schisandra would make a good tincture. I make a goji and centella rice wine tincture that would be awesome with schisandra berries:)
The fifty fundamental herbs have quite a few fruits actually,  I know of Schisandra, goji, jujube, longan, cornus fruit, ligustrum fruit. Schisandra may not be the best tasting of these but is arguably the most medicinally active and as are all of them a powerful nutritive tonic some claim can increase longevity and quality of life:)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sopMqwEEwuE This is very interesting...

China is such a diverse and awe inspiringly beautiful country! This video makes me want schisandra even more!
The lignans in the fruit as well as many other chemical compounds give this fruit strong liver protecting abilities I think this is why it was revered as an skin and beauty tonic but has many other benifits. It is also said to improve concentration being a slight stimulant(think this action is down to schizandrinA or B which you find in some pre work out supps interestingly enough). In TCM it has all five tastes and nourishes all three treasures.

The taste is not what I would say is something to be savored rather incorporated into stews, juices etc to extol the benefits(I prefer whole powder in gel caps but dried berries in stews or tea is quite nice)

It seem the eastern prince is self fertile but I would be worried that a non wild developed cultivator might have less medicinal compounds? (not sure about that though) The taste honestly is abit strange so might as well find out what is most powerful medicinally.

NIce things about vines is they can share spaces to overcome dioecy.
I would be really interested if anyone can  source seeds for this I have been trying to grow it for a few years but combination of poor sources and difficult germination has thwarted me.

Auto fertile as in self fertile?
It's even worse than needing another plant you.need another plant of the opposite sex so you need minimum two vines.
It is hardy down to Zone four and is shade tolerant it is strange tasting( known as the five flavour berry as it has all the Chinese important flavours) I'm pretty sure it needs cold stratification  like some time in the fridge but not sure how much as I didn't get it right. Maybe with GA3?

Tried to sprout seeds s bunch of times nada it needs cold stratification and male and female to fruit. Really want this plant. I use alot of the dry powder of the seeds and fruit.

When growing a liana type plant in a greenhouse enviroment are there any specific ways of growing them that are best?

Should you force them into a tree or shrublike habit with stakes? Let them share a pot with a stronger tree to climb on naturally or just let them do whatever they want maybe tie it togreen house roof if it grows tall then horizontal as they do in nature? Espalier?
Ofcourse fruiting habits of the particular plant would also need to be taken into consideration but in general is there a rule of thumb for container liana type plants.
iv searched and can't find much info on this.
It's always nice if you can keep a plants natural growth habit for looks but this my not be practical in containers.
Does anyone have experience growing trees like this in a container situation?
Thank you.

It will root in water but takes double the time and it struggles when you plant it out I think the roots made in water don't do well in soil.

Never lost one by just twisting off top removing any excess fruity bits and some lower leaves to make abit of a stem then let it calous over pop it in coco peat and keep moist. Mine even start indoors with not much sun.
